Abstract

Eye fatigue or asthenopia are symptoms that arise due to excessive use of the visual system that is in an imperfect condition to obtain visual acuity. Refractive error is one of the individual elements that affects eye fatigue. People with asthenopia have an accommodating reaction to refractive error. Eye fatigue is a condition that needs to be addressed because it can have a negative impact on a patient's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the level of eye fatigue in medical students with refractive errors and without refractive errors at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Warmadewa University. This research is an analytic observational study with a case control research design. Sampling was carried out in a total sampling with a total sample of 114 people, with total sample of 57 people in each case and control group. Data were obtained by measuring photostress recovery test (PSRT), checking visual acuity and consist of questionnaire. The results of the study on the subject of eye fatigue showed low eye fatigue level of 26.4%, moderate eye fatigue level of 40.4% and severe eye fatigue level of 35.1%. The results of the bivariate analysis using chi square test showed that there was a relationship between refractive errors and eye fatigue (p value = 0.000) and there were differences in the level of eye fatigue in students with and without refractive errors (p value = 0.01).

Abstract

Congenital orbital teratoma is a rare and complex congenital anomaly due to abnormal tissue growth within the orbit. This case report aims to highlight the significance of early prenatal screening in identifying congenital orbital teratoma and its potential complications. A 6-day-old male newborn presented with macrocephaly and a unilateral massive protrusion of the left eye. Prenatal ultrasonography performed at 36 weeks gestation showed a suspicion of fetal craniofacial mass. Further brain CT scan revealed an orbital heterogeneous mass, with calcified components dominantly in the anterior and middle cranial fossa into the left orbit, which was subsequently diagnosed as congenital orbital teratoma associated with non-communicating hydrocephalus. This finding prompted an urgent ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. Unfortunately, despite prompt intervention, the patient passed away after the procedure. Pathological examination was compatible with an immature teratoma. Multidisciplinary management is warranted to improve diagnostic screening and refine management strategies for better outcomes in such cases.

Abstract

Background: Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a collection of acute and life threatening skin symptoms caused by an allergic drug reaction. SJS also attacks the other mucous membranes, one of which is the eye. SJS is a rare case. The initial complaint of SJS is the eruption on the skin in the form of redness followed by blisters and attacking other mucous membranes. The ocular manifestations of SJS are conjunctivitis, corneal erosion, corneal ulcers, and blepharitis. Methods: Treatment of SJS’s ocular manifestation is administration of drugs and surgical intervention. Administration of drugs that often done in the acute phase is antibiotic eye drops with steroids to prevent complications. Complications that can occur include symblepharon, districhiasis, and keratitis. This complication can cause a sharp decrease in vision. Results: This case report discusses a 68 year old male patient with blisters all over his body accompanied by swelling in both eyes, redness in both eyes, and difficult to open eyes. Patients with history of taking the new drug a month ago. No history of drug allergy. The patient suffered from hypertension, non-hemorrhagic stroke, and epilepsy with irregular treatment. Patient was performed a fluorescein test. In this case, the patient is given antibiotic ointment and artificial tears with steroids. In this case there were no complications. Conclusion: The ocular manifestations of SJS if handled quickly and properly can prevent long-term complications.
