Abstract

Access to education remains a challenge for children with disability. In Indonesia, families can choose to send children with disability to either inclusive or specialized schools. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with the choice of sending children with disability to inclusive or special schools and factors linked to school dropout. Caregivers of children with disability in Java, Indonesia were interviewed to collect data on enrolment in school, sex and age of the children with disability, type of disability, parents’ age and education, and independence of children with disability. The characteristics of children with disability studying in inclusive and special schools were compared. Logistic multivariate linear regression was done to analyze factors related to the choice of school. Data from 281 children with disability were analyzed: 175 (62.3%) of the school-aged children with disability were actively studying at school, with 84.57% studying in inclusive schools and 15.43% in special schools. Children’s age, independence in daily activities, and ability to learn and play are factors that affect parents’ choice of educational placement for children with disability. Children’s age and mothers’ age are variables influencing children with disability to drop out.

Abstract

Anak berkebutuhan khusus atau ABK adalah anak yang membutuhkan memerlukan pendidikan yang sesuai dengan kondisi fisik, mental, intelektual, sosial, dan emosional mereka. Setiap anak yang memiliki disabilitas baik dengan keterbatasan fisik, mental, intelektual, sosial dan emosional berhak memperoleh pendidikan. Pendidikan seksual juga penting bagi ABK, mengingat mereka mengalami pubertas seperti anak lainnya. Di Yogyakarta, terdapat 9 SLBN, termasuk SLBN 1 Yogyakarta yang bekerja sama dengan FK UKDW. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman ABK tentang pendidikan seksual dan kebersihan genitalia melalui metode cross age peer teaching. Kegiatan ini menggunakan alat peraga, video, dan puzzle. Evaluasi langsung pada siswa dan evaluasi yang didapat dari umpan balik dari orang tua menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman pengetahuan dan sikap siswa akan konsep “area pribadi”. Akan Tetapi, membutuhkan kolaborasi lebih lanjut diperlukan antara guru, orang tua, dan tenaga medis untuk mendukung keberhasilan pendidikan seksual bagi ABK. Program ini diharapkan menjadi model pembelajaran inklusif yang dapat diterapkan di sekolah khusus lainnya.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the social network between rural and urban elderly with disability. Methodology: The study participants were community dwelling rural and urban elderly with disability. Disability was assessed using Washington Group Short Set of questions on functioning and social network was rated using the Lubben Social Network Scale. Data were analysed using ANOVA test and crosstabulation to gain a deeper understanding with demographic variables. Results: A total of 115 (55 rural and 60 urban) elderly with disability aged 60-95 years participated in this study. Rural elderly with disability are more involved in social networking. Urban elderly women seem to experience higher rates of isolation. Rural men exhibit higher level of social networking compared to urban men and women in both rural and urban settings. Elderly who have education have higher social network than those without education. Married elderly, particularly in rural areas, have higher levels of social networking and lower rates of isolation compared to those who are single. Single elderly, especially in urban areas, are more vulnerable to social isolation. Applications/Originality/Value: Rural older people with disability have higher social networking than their urban counterparts. The findings that sociodemographic and geographic factors shape social network of elderly with disability emphasize the needs of social policies and community-based programs targeting urban elderly with disability, particularly women, those who are single or have lower education.

Abstract

Background: Population of elderly in Indonesia continues to grow. Physical changes in the elderly cause balance disturbances, increasing the risks of falling. Objective: To determine balance training effectiveness on reducing risks of falls in elderly. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with control and intervention groups. Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) were used to assess balance function. The elderly in this study had risks of falling according to FRT and FES-I. Timed Get-up and Go Test was used to assess physical function. Education and balance exercises were given for 3 weeks to the intervention group. Pre-test data were taken at the beginning of the study, while post-test data after the balance training was given to the intervention group. Paired t-test was used to compare the pre-test and post-test data. Results: Research was conducted in Warungboto and Giwangan Kampongs, Umbulharjo District, Yogyakarta Municipality. Data from 60 elderly: 30 in the intervention and 30 in the control groups. Paired t-test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test results in the intervention group on FRT (t=-16,301, p<0.001, and FES-I (t=-24,457, p<0.001). The three-week-balance-training significantly reduced the risk of falling in the intervention group. Significant difference was not found in the control group on FRT (t=-0.126, p=0.901), and FES-I (t=-0.764, p=0.451). There was no significant reduction in the risks of falls in the control group. Conclusion: Balance training is effective in reducing the risk of falls in elderly.

Abstract

Abstrak Pendahuluan: Demensia merupakan salah satu gangguan yang bisa terjadi pada lanjut usia akibat proses penuaan dan kerusakan sel saraf dan koneksinya. Pada kondisi demensia yang parah bisa terjadi gangguan dalam melakukan aktivitas sehari-hari dan menjadi orang tidak mandiri. Pemerintah memiliki upaya tindakan preventif dan promotif dengan mengadakan posyandu lansia yang dibantu oleh kader kesehatan. Kader kesehatan diharapkan bisa membantu mengedukasi masyarakat. Tujuan: Mengetahui gambaran pengetahuan kader tentang demensia di Desa Wonokerto, Turi, Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Metode Penelitian: Subyek penelitian ini adalah kader posyandu lansia di Desa Wonokerto, Turi yang diambil dengan cara purposeful sampling dengan metode penelitian kualitatif dan pendekatan fenomenologi. Pengumpulan data dengan in-depth interview dan selanjutnya dilakukan transkrip wawancara dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan thematic framework. Hasil: Mayoritas subyek penelitian masih kurang memahami terkait pengetahuan umum demensia.Pada subyek penelitian yang berusia lebih tua, tingkat pendidikan terakhir SMA se-derajat atau D-3, memiliki motivasi untuk melakukan pengabdian kepada masyakatat, mengalami pengalaman menjadi kader >10 tahun, memiliki pengalaman melaksanakan kegiatan khusus demensia dan sudah pernah diberikan pelatihan terkait demensia mampu menjawab hampir seluruh pertanyaan dengan lebih mendalam. Kesimpulan: Mayoritas subyek penelitian masih kurang memahami terkait pengetahuan umum demensia. Tingkat pengetahuan subyek penelitian juga dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor.
