Abstract

Indonesian government, through BKKBN, has joined to promote healthy life in the elderly in the community. Bina Keluarga Lansia (BKL) programme was established to fulfil elderly need through a family-based approach. This study is aimed to evaluate the programme with the examination of the quality of life of its members, including the elderly and their family member. We used a cross-sectional method using WHO-QOL BREF questionnaire to assess the quality of life and another questionnaire to enlist the involvement on the BKL activities. This study was conducted in 2018, at four BKL groups across Sleman Regency. Further analysis was conducted with gaussian mix models to adjust for the cluster effect from sampling method. Our 103 respondents with 68 family members and 35 elderly generally have a good quality of life on four dimensions of WHO-QOL BREF. We found that BKL activities statistically significant associated with better QoL, especially in Social Domain and Psychological Domain. Activities that were specifically associated with better QoL was health education on elderly resilience and art/music activities. Other activities that show borderline association was business activities. BKL programme has shown an association with better QoL, thus any successful activities should be maintained or improved, and other less influential activities should be reviewed and customised with local needs.

Abstract

People with disabilities are vulnerable to being infected with the COVID-19 virus. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on human life, including the health of people with disabilities. The government makes various policies and programs in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but their implementation is still challenging for people with disabilities. This community service program was carried out in collaboration with Mitra Sejahtera Disability Empowerment Center (PPDMS), an organization empowering people with disabilities in Gunungkidul Regency. Empowerment of people with disabilities was carried out using 'community control' principle in which the community has the control in making decisions regarding the problems they face so that they can adopt a ‘new normal’ lifestyle because of their knowledge. The principle of 'community control' was applied by providing education about COVID-19 situation in Indonesia, the symptoms and signs of COVID-19 infection, wash hands, proper cough etiquette, how to use masks, food and lifestyle that can prevent COVID-19 transmission, as well as about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination. Education was given with a presentation followed by discussion. Evaluation was carried out quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative evaluation using pretest and post-test showed an increase in knowledge. Qualitative evaluation using FGD indicated changes in attitudes and behavior that support the adoption of ‘new normal’ lifestyle to prevent transmission of COVID-19. People with disabilities who have received education disseminate the information obtained to other people with disabilities, resulted in multiplication effect of this empowerment program for people with disabilities.

Abstract

As humans age, there is a decline in the function and physiological mechanisms of the body, which can affect quality of life. Chronic inflammation is one of the characteristics found in the aging process, marked by an increase in proinflammatory cytokines in circulation. IL-6 is one of the cytokines that play a role in chronic inflammation. This study aimed to determine serum IL-6 levels using D-galactose induction in Sprague-Dawley rats. The study used a pure experiment with a post-test only control group design, in which 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: control and treatment. The research sample was serum, and the control group received a placebo of 0.9% NaCl at a dose of 400 mg/day/kg intraperitoneally. The treatment group, which underwent aging induction, was given D-galactose at the same dose and route. The treatment was administered for 6 weeks, and serum was collected from blood taken in the 6th week. The results indicated that the administration of D-galactose did not have a significant effect on increasing IL-6 levels.

Abstract

Background: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is one of the most common complications of COVID-19 infection and is closely related with patient mortality. Increased D-dimer levels are considered one of the most consistent clinical indicators of coagulopathy. Theoretically, this event is based on the emergence of a cytokine storm triggering lung tissue damage, pulmonary microvascular endothelial damage and alveolar edema, leading to hypoxia in the body. Objective: To determine the association between ARDS incidence and the increase in D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients at Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta. Method: This research was conducted in retrospective cohort design. The data utilized in this study came from the medical records of male and female COVID-19 patients between 19 and 60 years old, who were diagnosed with ARDS by doctors at Bethesda Yogyakarta Hospital. The medical records were collected between June 1, 2021, and September 30, 2021. The data analysis included univariate (descriptive statistics) and bivariate (Chi-Square, Mann-Whitney, Spearman Rank) analyses. Result: There was a significant relationship between COVID-19 ARDS patients and the increased levels of D-dimer in patients undergoing hospitalization at Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta (p<0,001, OR=4,589, 95%CI=2,104-10,007). Additionally, there was a significant difference in D-dimer levels between ARDS and non-ARDS patients. The severity of ARDS, duration of hospitalization, gender, and age did not have a significant association with the increase in D-dimer levels (p>0,05). Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between the incidence of ARDS and elevation of D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients at Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Acne is a chronic skin disease involving inflammation of the pilosebaceous units with the main bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes has prompted the creation of cosmetic masks containing antibacterial agents. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Lemongrass and Clove essential oils and to determine the synergistic effects of combining these essential oils in a peel-off gel mask formulation. The study was conducted using the liquid dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and the disk diffusion method to test the inhibition zone diameter. Additionally, tests are conducted to determine the antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, as well as to analyse the stability of the product both chemically and physically during storage. The results of the study showed that (1) the formulation containing a combination of 25% lemongrass and 18% cloves showed high inhibitory power and good stability, but caused moderate irritation; (2) lemongrass and clove essential oils were effective against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, but it was recommended to reduce the active ingredients to prevent potential irritation.
