Abstract

The spread of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has increased over time. The government urges people to take extra measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and maintaining dental and oral health is one of those measures that could help to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. People are taught personal dental and oral health practices as well as the necessary health protocols if they decide to visit a dental health facility. The purpose of this activity is to increase participant’s knowledge of the transmission of COVID-19 and how to maintain their dental and oral health. The method used involved measuring the level of knowledge before and after counseling. Furthermore, online counseling and training were provided through Zoom. The pre and post-test results from 88 participants showed that there was a significant increase in knowledge after counseling.

Abstract

Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common type of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder (SRBD) defined as a cessation of airflow at the nose and mouth enduring for a minimum of ten seconds. The awareness absences of this condition particularly in children will contribute to the growth and development abnormality which effected their adulthood. The difficulty in diagnosing SRBD/OSA’s children with Polysomnography (PSG) as a Gold Standard is another challenging issue due to the inconvenience and the high cost. Recent studies have reported the possibility of screening this condition with Questionnaires contains items of SRBD signs. Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) was one of the most frequently used questionnaire in this screening processed. Purpose: The study aims were to translate PSQ into the Indonesian language and measuring the reliability of the questionnaire. Methods: PSQ translated with a forward-backward translation technique and analytic observational with the cross-sectional design was conducted at school placed in Tangerang City with 154 respondents age 6-18 years old who fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. Cronbach’s alpha was used to measure the reliability of each item question. Results: The Cronbach’s alpha for this study was 0,714 which was reliable for this questionnaire to be used for screening patients with SRBD. Conclusion: This study showed that the PSQ has good reliability which can be more optimized to diagnosed SRBD in children together with PSG.

Abstract

Background: Bruxism is considered to be a common condition among the adult population, although data on bruxism are still rare. Bruxism is repetitive jaw activity during sleep (sleep bruxism) and awake (awake bruxism). In healthy individuals, bruxism should not be regarded as a disorder, but as a behavior that can be a risk factor for certain clinical conditions. Several studies have stated that the accuracy of self-reported bruxism is low because the individual is less aware of the behavior. Aim: To find out the concordance of the results of self-reported bruxism before and after self-observation. Methods: The type of research used in this research is analytic observational using a cross-sectional research design. The data was obtained by distributing questionnaires via a google form link to 142 FKG Usakti students class 2020. Inter Class Correlation (ICC) was calculated to assess the concordance between the two assessments using five items of Oral Behavior Checklist questionnaire (OBCL). Results: High concordance was shown between assessment prior and after self observation. The ICC results range from 0.636 to 0.838 for five items of OBCL Conclusion: There is a high concordance between the results of self-reported bruxism before and after self-observation.

Abstract

Background: Sleep-breathing disorder (SBD) in children is strongly related to the number of dentofacial abnormalities. The manifestation of Children’s sleep problems can be misinterpreted as other pediatric conditions and affect the treatment accuracy. Instrument for screening need to be provided, therefore question about children’s sleep conditions need to be included. One of the instruments is Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire. In pediatric sleep studies, the application of sleep survey instruments has been applied but only a few reported the reliability or validity of the survey instruments. Purpose: The aim of the study is to produce accurate and reliable measuring devices to identify and assess sleep disorders that occur in children. Methods: This research was conducted using analytic observational with cross-sectional design at Tangerang City with 154 respondents who fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. Spearman correlation test is used to measure the validity, Cronbach’s alpha is used to measure the reliability of each item question. Results: Based on the analysis, it showed snoring, sleepiness. and behavior showed a valid result, but two items showed invalid result. This can be caused by several factors; including limited parent’s knowledge and time to accompany children during sleep. Conclusion: This study shows that the PSQ has good validity and reliability which can identify and assess sleep problems in children aged 6-18 years.

Abstract

Elderly are people aged 60 years or more. According to Riskesdas, the highest prevalence of tooth loss in Indonesia is in the age group over 60 years, specifically at 30.6%. Prosthodontic treatment can improve a patient's oral health, improve their masticatory and speech functions, and improve their aesthetics. However, the use of dentures requires proper care. The elderly need to be aware of how to maintain oral health and care for dentures to ensure its longevity. The purpose of this activity is to increase knowledge and change attitudes and behaviors concerning dental health care, denture care and oral hygiene in the elderly. In this activity, audio visual training techniques are applied by using powerpoint and videos as training tools to improve the retention of counseling materials by the elderly and avoid saturation. The delivery of materials is conducted using a language that is easily understood by the elderly. Based on the results of the pretest and posttest, this activity shows an increase in knowledge as well as the enthusiasm of the participants in asking questions about counseling and training related to maintaining oral health and the mouth as well as dentures. A good level of success can be achieved through this activity as it is supported by appropriate methods and good communication between the implementing team and the community.

Abstract

A person who has reached the elderly stage will have an experienced degenerative process that causes several disorders. Changes in the masticatory function due to the loss of the remaining teeth can cause a transformation not only in the mastication system but also in the upper airway system of respiration. This is due to orofacial deformation, tongue retraction while in the resting position, occlusal vertical dimension changes, and a decrease in facial height. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep breathing disorder with 17 % prevalence rate in adults and increases up to 49% in the elderly stage. A complete denture can be a rehabilitative treatment option for the elderly OSA patient. Wearing dentures during sleep is against the principles of dentistry because it can cause the tongue to be positioned posteriorly. However, people, mostly women, still wears denture while sleeping. This might further increase the obstruction of upper airway system.

Abstract

Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by breathing difficulties during sleep. Dentists play a crucial role in raising awareness about OSA and assisting patients in obtaining a diagnosis by providing accurate information. This necessitates using precise measurement tools to identify and assess sleep disorders in patients during dental visits. Objective: To determine the validity and reliability of a questionnaire regarding dentists' understanding of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in Jakarta. Method: This study employed an analytical observational approach using a cross-sectional design. The sample included 220 dentists working in Jakarta's health centers, clinics, and hospitals. Data analysis was conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test for normality test. Results: The correlation test results indicated that the questionnaire met the criteria for validity. The average Cronbach's Alpha value was 0.712, exceeding the minimum value of 0.60, indicating that the questionnaire used in this study is reliable and can accurately measure dentists' understanding of OSA. Conclusion: Research involving dentists aged 25-50 suggests that the questionnaire assessing the level of knowledge of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) demonstrates good accuracy and can be relied upon as a tool to evaluate dentists' comprehension of OSA.

Abstract

Obstructive airway disorders in children are common and hurt the child's development and quality of life. These disorders can also have long-term effects on children's health into adulthood. School teachers can be the first line of preventive efforts in children's health. Early detection of obstructive airway disorders is preventive care in children. This community service (PkM) aims to provide sufficient knowledge and skills to detect obstructive airway disorders in children. The training was given to 59 kindergarten and elementary school teachers at IPEKA BSD, which was divided into two topics: normal growth and disorders that occur in children and adolescents. The evaluation of activities showed a significant increase in knowledge of both topics. The low knowledge of breathing disorders can be increased significantly through this PkM activity. Good cooperation was also shown by the school, so that activities ran well and could be continued to become a sustainable routine activity.
