Abstract

The study of radioactive dispersion in the ocean should be conducted to prepare the construction of nuclear power plant (NPP) in Gosong Coast, West Kalimantan. This study estimated the distribution of 137Cs radioactive from various scenarios of radioactive waste dumping if nuclear emergency is occurred during NPP’s operation. These scenarios were distinguished based on their volume discharges of radioactive waste into the ocean, included 10 m3 (Scenario I), 50 m3 (Scenario II), and 100 m3 (Scenario III).  Model dispersions were constructed for 15 days by Delft3D-Flow module. The simulation showed that ocean current directions were not significantly different among spring and neap tide, instead the ocean current during the spring period dominantly increased rather than neap period. Ocean currents at Gosong Coast flowed parallel to the shoreline towards Singkawang Coastal Area during ebb tide. Meanwhile, during flood tide, ocean currents at Gosong Coast flowed offshore through Burung Archipelagic. The dispersed model showed the distribution of 137Cs radioactive for 15 days reaching to coastal areas of Burung Archipelagic, Singkawang, and Southern Sambas Coast. Each scenario of the disposal system did not influence the marine pollution of the West Kalimantan Sea.

Abstract

Coral disease can cause coral damage on Menjangan Besar Island, Karimunjawa. Floating net cages adjacent to coral reefs can affect coral health. Floating net cages can affect water quality by adding nutrients, such as nitrate (205.6 and phosphate 39.2/ton fish production). Nutrients and environmental factors can trigger and cause coral disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the existence of floating net cages on the prevalence of coral disease on Menjangan Besar Island, Karimunjawa. The research was conducted using a survey method, data collection using a proportional method, the results of the data will be analyzed descriptively. The results of the study found Black Band Disease, Brown Band Disease, Ulcerative White Pox, White syndrome, Yellow Bloch Disease, Pigmentation responses, White Plague and White Band Disease. Water parameters such as temperature ranged from 30.71-30.750C, salinity 32.7-33.20/00, current velocity 0.03-0.06 m/s, nitrate 0.586-1,128 mg/L and phosphate 0.064-0.133 mg/ L. The most common disease is Ulcerative White Pox. The prevalence of coral disease is influenced by the presence of floating net cages, it can be seen in A1, A2 and A3 with prevalence values (39.85, 43.61 and 33.14) which are higher than B1 and B2 (14.41 and 10,6).

Abstract

The Pantar Strait with its coral reef ecosystem has encouraged many tourists to dive since the last decade. At least, ten coral reef ecosystem sites in Pantar Strait have been indicated as having potential for marine tourism, such as Munaseli Beach, Obisinga Beach, Umangdang Beach, Alor Eco Dive Resort, Ternate Island, Bakalang Beach, Pura Diving Spot, Nuhakepa Diving Spot, Pasir Putih Beach, and Savu Alor. This study illustrated the annual dynamics of ocean currents in Pantar Strait, subsequently assessing the safety rate of commercial diving at those tourism sites in each season. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was generated by the Delft3d flow module to illustrate the annual ocean current dynamic in the Pantar Strait. The safety assessment for marine tourism was classified into 3 levels (safe, alert, and dangerous). Ocean currents exceed maximum velocities in the west season. Various marine tourism sites close to steep slopes were not recommended for commercial diving. They are Munaseli Beach, Obisinga Beach, Pura Diving Spot, and Pasir Putih Beach. These sites experienced an increase in average currents that exceeded the safe threshold each season. Alor Eco Dive Resort was designated as the safest marine tourism, which showed a safe level for either average or maximum ocean currents in each season. Nuhakepa Diving Spot was designated as the second safest marine tourism. Several tourist sites that showed the danger of commercial diving in the west season were Umangdang Beach and Savu Alor. Many tourism sites showed an alert current for commercial diving in Springtide. Therefore, tourists are advised to avoid diving during the spring tide.
