Abstract

Reducing the deforestation rate and formulating sustainable forest governance are still challenging for Southeast Asia. This empirical research intends to explore the dynamic connection between GDP, trade openness, corruption, and deforestation within the EKC framework by considering controls over agriculture and population. This article uses panel data from nine countries from 1996 to 2018. Pooled Mean Group (PMG) procedure and Dumitrescu-Hurlin (DH) causality tests were applied to examine the variables’ long-term relationships and the direction of the causality. This article also features the unit root and cointegration tests. The estimation supports the EKC hypothesis that the nexus between economic growth and deforestation forms an inverted-U curve. The turning point of the per capita GDP is USD 26785, i.e., the advanced stage of development. Other findings are that trade openness is a driver of deforestation, while control of corruption is an effective instrument to reduce the deforestation rate in the long run. Deforestation will still occur in Southeast Asia because only Brunei Darussalam has passed the turning point. However, implementing development programs while reducing the deforestation rate can be done because the bidirectional causality between GDP and deforestation is not confirmed. Improving trade regulations and governance is a necessary scheme to reduce deforestation rates in the future.

Abstract

Data play an important role in mapping problems, potentials, and long-term plans of an institution, including Islamic boarding schools. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to socialize the importance of computer-based data management through the use of Microsoft Excel, Google Forms, and Bitly. This community service activity was carried out at the Darul Ilmi Islamic boarding school, Meteseh Village, Semarang. Community service was conducted through three approaches: (i) field observation, (ii) interactive socialization, and (iii) mentoring/training. Field observations were applied to collect problems that existed at the location and potential that could be developed. Socialization was carried out by providing material on "the importance of computer-based data management" to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the use of student data. Interactive socialization was employed directly to provide space for all participants to express their opinions. The results of this PKM were three things: (i) mentoring the use of M.S. Excel for data management; (ii) training in the use of Google Forms to collect student data according to certain objectives, for example, biodata and future career plans; and (iii) educating the application of Bit.ly as a device to shorten and manage URLs.

Abstract

Aloe vera is a horticultural plant that has a number of health benefits, especially for skin and hair health. Whilst aloe vera grows abundantly in rural areas, it is not widely used for daily activities or economic benefits. Hence, this community service aims to educate village communities regarding the health and economic potential of aloe vera for bath soap. This community service was conducted by employing two approaches, namely lecture and tutorial methods, which are integrated with the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program. The specific location of the activity is Plesan Village, Nguter District, Sukoharjo Regency. The audience for this community service is rural women. The results of the community service activities are: (1) rural communities are educated in terms of the benefits of aloe vera from a health perspective: (2) village communities understand the economic potential of aloe vera: (2) rural communities, particularly women, can make bath soap from aloe vera.

Abstract

The development of Islamic banking assets in OIC countries requires performance evaluation, but conventional financial ratios are still used. This study aims to explore the relationship between Good Corporate Governance variables (Board of Commissioners, Independent Commissioners, Sharia Supervisory Board, and Audit Committee) and Maqaṣid-based Sharia banking performance. Using the Maqaṣid-Based Performance Evaluation Model (MPEM), data from 22 Islamic banks in 7 OIC countries (2018-2022) with a fixed securities model were analyzed. The findings indicate that the Board of Commissioners and Independent Commissioners influence Maqaṣid-based performance, whereas the Sharia Supervisory Board and Audit Committee do not have a significant impact. The majority of banks have a low Maqaṣid performance index, indicating a reliance on conventional systems despite Sharia compliance.

Abstract

The dynamic modern workplace and digitalization change the workforce from rigid to liquid workforces. Therefore, this study aims to unravel the characteristics, benefits, and challenges of fluid workers in Indonesia using a qualitative method. For these motivations, structured questionnaires with dichotomous questions were distributed to collect primary data. To avoid biased results, study participants are chosen rigorously. The number of participants was 15 workers from various institutions. The findings show that most fluid workers in Indonesia are adaptive, easy to collaborate with, tech-savvy, lifelong learners, and resilient. The current benefits of fluid workers include skill and knowledge exposure, networking possibilities, the prospect of higher income, and flexibility. In terms of challenges, a lack of benefits and limited social support are two factors that impede fluid workers. Surprisingly, job insecurity and income instability are not the primary concerns for fluid workers, indicating that fluid workers differ significantly from informal workers. The priority needs of fluid workers are the right to rest and leisure, equal treatment, fair compensation, and career development opportunities.

Abstract

Southeast Asia is one of the regions that has received a red report card related to forest management. This article intends to investigate the relationship between urbanization, livestock, and deforestation in Southeast Asia, as well as elaborate on STRIPAT's concept. This study uses panel data of 9 countries and 28 periods, obtained from the statistical publication of WDI, World Bank. This article applies the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimation and performs unit root, co-integration, and causality tests. The estimation results show that urbanization, GDP per capita, and livestock positively and significantly impact deforestation. The increase in the level of urbanization, GDP per capita, and livestock production will be followed by a decrease in forest cover area. In contrast, population density is not the driver of deforestation. In addition, this paper confirms bidirectional causality between urbanization and deforestation rates, as well as a unidirectional causality from income per capita to deforestation and from population density to deforestation. National development plans, urban development, and livestock expansion must be integrated with forest management to reduce deforestation rates

Abstract

Agriculture is supposed to have a pivotal role in assisting poverty alleviation in Indonesia. Hence, this paper empirically examines the causal link between paddy productivity and poverty rates in Sumatra, retrieving balanced panel data from ten provinces for the period 2010-2022. Dumitrescu-Hurlin (DH) causality and Pooled Mean Group (PMG) methods are applied in order to reveal the causal direction and the elasticity under heterogeneous panel models. This paper integrates slope homogeneity, panel unit root, and panel cointegration tests. The results reveal that poverty rates and paddy productivity, are integrated in mixed order, and , and they are cointegrated. The DH causality test denotes a unidirectional causality from paddy productivity toward poverty rates which implies the absence of a feedback effect. Following the PMG model, there is a positive impact of paddy productivity on poverty rates in the short run (∆β= 0.29); however, this linkage switches to become negative in the long run (β= -0.48). A 1% improvement in paddy productivity will be followed by a 0.48% reduction in poverty rates. Thus, augmenting paddy productivity has a favorable role in declining poverty rates. The estimated parameters of long-run PMG are robust, i.e., consistent with alternative methods of cointegrated regressions.
