Abstract

Culinary language helps express and preserve cultural identity; however, the linguistic features of Banyuwangi traditional culinary terms and their links to Osing culture remain underexplored. This study analyzes the phonological, morphological, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics of these terms and examines how they function as markers of Osing identity. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the research combines semi-structured interviews, participant observation in traditional food settings, and document analysis of local recipe books and menus. The findings demonstrate that these terms constitute a robust yet flexible lexicon with basic sound symbolism, wide use of compounding, many descriptive meanings and lots of metaphorical creativity that enhance memorability, oral transmission and change. While showing these words being pragmatically deployed as semiotic resources in actions localizing identity and voicing community pride, also participates in cultural branding of Banyuwangi as different by combining them with Indonesian or English classifiers to create hybrid tourism labels. Linking a detailed formal analysis of terms for foods with identity-oriented socialist, this study cries out for linguistics and provides a valuable lexical resource for classroom teaching about cultural difference in local-content and intercultural curricula as well as its contribution to local culture heritage and tourism program.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes how the community has responded to the development of Bimo Coastal Tourism, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, Indonesia, utilizing a framework of Community-Based Tourism. Addressing the absence of village-based, community-driven coastal tourism, this research uses a qualitative research approach by conducting observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis from local communities, tourism managers, and village authorities. The study discovers that the genesis of Bimo Beach development was from bottom-up initiatives driving social cohesion, informal governance, and environmentally friendly practices rather than large-scale investment. Local tourism-related activities generated actual economic impacts with the induced benefits reaching the households, mainly in the trade and service sectors. Earnings from petty trade and parking services diversified livelihoods and built community resilience. The case identifies that local government can become a big brother by congregation strengthening community institutions, incorporating into tourism planning the element of environmental conservation, and enforcing a light-touch regulatory frameworks to monitor, evaluate, and standardize services. This policy model can be useful for other emerging coastal tourism destinations in Indonesia sharing similar socio-cultural and environmental features.

Abstract

Polysemy is a central issue in semantic studies, referring to a single lexical item that carries multiple related meanings depending on context. In Japanese, this phenomenon is known as tagigo (多義語). The word kiken (危険), commonly translated as “danger” or “risk,” demonstrates semantic variation across different text genres. This study aims to identify the core meaning and extended meanings of kiken and to analyze the semantic relations underlying its meaning expansion in NHK Yasashii Kotoba Nyuusu. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic analysis approach. The data consist of sentences containing kiken extracted from 12 news articles published between August 2024 and July 2025. A total of 27 instances were identified and classified based on their semantic categories. The findings reveal that 8 data represent the core meaning, referring to direct physical danger to body and life. Meanwhile, 19 data demonstrate extended meanings, including social and ecological risks as well as the potential occurrence of undesirable or life-threatening events. The semantic expansion is influenced by figurative relations, particularly metonymy, as well as metaphor and synecdoche. The study concludes that the meaning of kiken is highly contextual and dynamic, reflecting semantic flexibility in Japanese news discourse. These findings highlight the importance of contextual interpretation in understanding polysemous vocabulary, especially in high-context languages such as Japanese.
