Abstract

This study aims to address the challenges of teaching grammar, which often relies on theoretical material with limited practical application, individual teaching methods, and a teacher-cantered approach. It proposes the use of project-based learning (PjBL) as a model to engage students actively and improve their understanding of grammar. The research, conducted at Nurul Ulum Islamic Religious School for Girls in Kebonsari, Malang, East Java, explores the implementation of the PjBL model in grammar instruction and the nature of the projects used in this context. The model comprises three main stages: pre-action (goal setting, tool selection, and time planning), action (assignment, planning, and evaluation), and post-action. During the action phase, students work collaboratively to construct sentences based on Qur'anic verses, with a specific focus on understanding grammatical rules such as the nominative case for nouns. The findings suggest that this approach fosters students’ initiative, independence, and cooperation while promoting responsibility in problem-solving tasks. This model enhances students' active participation and engagement, making grammar instruction more dynamic and contextually relevant.

Abstract

Children’s understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment is a significant factor in fostering ecological awareness, which forms the foundation for future environmental coservation efforts. This research aims to describe and identify place-attachment as an effort for environmental conservation in the Bait al-Ahdhar children's story series based on Lawrence Buell's ecocriticial perspective. The type of research used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data source is the Bait al-Ahdhar children's story series by Hadil Ghanim and Walid Tahir, with additional data drawn from books, journals, and relevant scientific articles. The data collection technique involves a thorough reading and note-taking process. The data analysis technique employs the Miles, Huberman and Saldaña model, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion/verification. The results of this research indicate the presence of four dimensions of place-attachment as a conservation effort in the children's story series Bait al-Ahdhar: (1) concentric areas, as evidenced by children's concern for the cleanliness of their bedrooms, house, and streets, (2) local archipelagos, as evidenced by children's concern for the school environment due to its regular use for learning and socializing, (3) the historicity of places, as evidenced by children's concern for the worsening environmental changes in the city, and (4) temporal accumulation, as evidenced by children's concern for the school environment based on learning and playing experiences in previous classes. These findings suggest that place-attachment may serve as a solution for children in environmental conservation.

Abstract

The current research aims at exploring the use of popular culture in the preaching (or Dakwah, in popular Indonesian term) delivered by Ustadz Hanan Attaki. As one of the most popular Islamic preachers in Indonesia, Ustadz Hanan Attaki applies the elements of popular culture, such as slang languages, English terms, music, and youth fashion, to deliver the Islamic teaching. The ways of applying the preaching with popular culture, is considered as relevant and appealing for the youths.  Through the qualitative approach, the current research analyzes Ustadz Hanan Attaki’s preaching through the Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, to get the ideas of how the popular culture is integrated into his preaching. The result shows that the use of popular culture does not only increase the preaching, but it also strengthens the audience’ understanding of Islamic values through the terms that are familiar to the young people. The strategy also attracts the emotional bond between the preacher and the audience so that the religious messages is accepted and comprehended. The reference of popular culture is sometimes also problematic as it is basically in the different discourse. The current research concluded that the integration of popular culture in religious preaching is effective strategy for a preaching which is contextual, although it is necessary to be careful so that it does not blur or make the religious teaching biased.
