Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection in the oral cavity. This infection is caused by the fungus Candida albicans. The most important virulent attribute of this fungus is its ability to form biofilms, which can adhere to mucosa, epithelial lining, organs, prostheses or dentures. The formed biofilm is resistant to antifungal drugs. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract on the inhibition of Candida albicans biofilm formation in vitro. Methods: This type of research is experimental study using post tests with control group design. Fungus used in this study was Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were conducted by microdilution method. Inhibition test of C. albicans biofilm formation was carried out using the polystyrene microplate assay method. Concentration of extracts used in this study were 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.13% and 1.57%. Inhibitory activity of biofilm was measured using a crystal violet (CV) assay. Results: The results showed that MIC of Moringa leaf extract against the fungus C. albicans was at a concentration of 6.25%. Moringa leaf extract starting at a concentration of 3.13% already has had ability to inhibit formation of C. albicans biofilm. Conclusion:  It can be concluded that Moringa leaf extract can inhibit formation of Candida albicans biofilm, so it can be developed as an alternative herbal ingredient to prevent oral candidiasis.EFFECT OF MORINGA (Moringa oleifera) LEAF EXTRACT ON IN VITRO INHIBITION OF Candida albicans BIOFILM

Abstract

Background: The community's low incidence of excellent and proper brushing behavior, which is primarily displayed by children (about 2%), is increasing the prevalence of dental decay. By employing the playing strategy, specifically with four card media, which has its own appeal due to the intriguing pictures, one can improve brushing behavior, which is now inadequate. Research Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of quartet card media counseling on toothbrushing behavior in elementary school students. This research used quasi experimental with pretest and posttest control group design. The samples were collected using total sampling, and they were 110 respondents. The sample is split into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The data were collected using questionnaires for pretest and posttest. The data analysis used a Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. Research Results: Tooth brushing behavior in elementary school students was 47.3% with good criteria, moderate 47.3%, and increased with good criteria 92.7%, while 7.3% following counseling. The experimental group's mean value was 14,36 compared to the control group's 12,64. The Wilcoxon test resulted in a p-value of 0.000, the Mann Whitney test obtained p=0.000. Conclusion: Counseling using quartet card media is effective in improving brushing behavior in elementary school children. Keyword : Effectiveness of counseling, quartet card media, brushing behavior.

Abstract

Background: Recent data show that the prevalence of dental caries in children aged 10 to 14 years is almost 41.4%. Several methods for managing caries include Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA). The CAMBRA method assists doctors in identifying causes of dental caries by identifying risk factors in each patient. Based on research, the etiology of dental caries was discovered by identifying risk factors in each participant. This study aims to identify what factors influence dental caries in children based on CAMBRA. Method: This research uses observational analysis with cross-sectional data. The respondents are students from Kadipiro I Elementary School, Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Purposive sampling was used to create the sample, which included 82 children between the ages of 10 and 12. The study was conducted by discovering dental caries risk factors with the CAMBRA method: 1. new cavity or lesion to dentine, 2. white spot, 3. restorations within the last three years, 4. volume of saliva, 5. plaque/ PHPM index, 6. pH saliva, and 7. frequency of sweet foods consumption. The scale of the data was nominal and analysed using the SPSS version 25.0 program, which included frequency analysis and logistic regression. Result: The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that five variables have a significant (p
