Abstract

Introductions: Candida albicans can causes an infection called candidiasis. Kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are natural products that contain several active compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and coumarins that can damage the membrane and cell wall of Candida albicans. Methods: The design of this study used true experimental post control design only with the tube dilution method. Extract concentrations used were 3200 mg/ml, 3600 mg/ml, 4000 mg/ml, 4400 mg/ml, 4800 mg/ml, 5200 mg/ml, 5600 mg/ml, and 6000 mg/ml. This study used a negative control (extract 0%) and a positive control (Nystatin 1%), each of which was added with Candida albicans. Results: The results showed that the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was obtained at 5200 mg/ml and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was obtained at 6000 mg/ml. One Way ANOVA statistical test results showed a significant difference (significance value 0,000; p< 0.05). Pearson correlation test showed the direction of the negative correlation (r = -0.945; p <0.01). Discussion: The ability of ethanolic extract of kidney bean to inhibit growth and kill the Candida albicans is due to the active compounds contained in it, namely flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and coumarin. Flavonoids can cause protein denaturation. Saponins have the ability to kill Candida albicans by forming pores in the double lipidic layer that results on the loss of cell integrity. Tannins have the ability to inhibit fungal growth by inhibiting the synthesis of chitin and damaging cell membranes. Coumarins can cause fungal death by interfering with cell wall synthesis. Conclusions: The conclusion of this research is the ethanol extract of kidney bean can inhibit at the concentration of 5200 mg/ml and kill the growth of Candida albicans at the concentration of 6000 mg/ml.

Abstract

Dental and oral health issues among the elderly are a significant concern as they greatly impact quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community service program in improving knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly in Dieng Village, Klojen District, Malang City. The program was conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry, Brawijaya University (FKG UB). The methods used included an initial survey, health education, dental examination and treatment, as well as evaluation using pre- and post-tests. A total of 49 elderly individuals participated in the program, with 71% being female. Analysis results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from the pre-test (M=10.98, SD=4.29) to the post-test (M=14.12, SD=5.19) with a p-value of 0.000. There was a significant difference based on gender, where females showed better results in the pre-test (M=11.97) and post-test (M=15.23) compared to males. Age was not found to have a significant influence on learning outcomes. The program successfully increased dental care awareness, with 80% of participants reporting improved tooth-brushing habits and a 30% reduction in active caries cases. These results indicate that the community service program effectively enhances knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a condition of hyperglycemia that occurs due to abnormal insulin secretion. This condition causes an increase in Reactive Oxygen Species, thereby reducing the production of growth factors such as TGF-β for fibroblast synthesis. Traumatic ulcers are ulcerative lesions characterized by the loss of the epithelial layer due to trauma. Binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) contain flavonoids and saponins that can accelerate wound healing. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effect of binahong leaf extract gel (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) on the number of fibroblast cells in the healing of traumatic ulcers in white rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study used a true experimental design in vivo with 32 male Wistar rats divided into 4 groups with 2 time series. The variable being studied is the average number of fibroblast cells observed on the 5th and 7th days. The doses of binahong leaf extract gel (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) used were 10% and 20%. Result: The group given 10% and 20% binahong leaf extract gel showed an increase in the number of fibroblasts compared to the other control groups. This difference is significant compared to the control group based on the Post-hoc Tuckey test with a p-value <0.05. Conclusion: The gel of binahong leaf extract (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) significantly increases the number of fibroblast cells in the healing of traumatic ulcers of the labial mucosa in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain induced by diabetes mellitus, and a concentration of 10% is quite effective for the healing of traumatic ulcers. Keywords: Binahong leaf, diabetes melitus, fibroblast, traumatic ulcers, wound healing.
