Abstract

Abstract

The tooth can stand by postmortem effects such as fire because of high temperature, and tooth enamel will have to increase in crystallization of hydroxyapatite so that it can still withstand. Enamel consists of enamel rods that microscopically have a unique pattern called tooth prints. The study aims to determine the differences between enamel rod patterns before and after being burnt as a determinant of tooth prints. The study used 30 maxillary first premolar that was randomly selected. The recording of enamel rod patterns was done using the cellulose acetate peeling technique. It did the recording before burnt (antemortem) and after being boiled at 650oC for 15 minutes (postmortem). Tooth prints which are the results of recording enamel rod pattern, were analyzed using Verifinger SDK v.4.2 to obtain a minute score, and then a statistical test was performed. The development of the statistical test showed no significant difference in enamel rod pattern between before and after being burnt (paired T-test, p=0,175). This study concludes that there is no significant difference in enamel rod patterns between before and after being burnt, showing that tooth prints can be used as an alternative for forensic identification in fire victims.

Abstract

The increasing elderly population in Lumajang Regency, especially in Yosowilangun District, indicates progress in life expectancy but also brings challenges related to elderly care and dependency. To address these issues, a women's empowerment program was conducted in 2023 through the mentoring of Elderly Care Mothers, focusing on promoting elderly independence and caregiver support. In 2024, the initiative continued with the development of a Senior-Friendly Park equipped with ergonomic seating, sensory therapy, and recreational facilities under the concept of the Elderly Care Corner. This program aimed to improve the quality of life of older adults, enhance community involvement, and support caregiving efforts. The activities included park construction, public engagement, capacity-building for elderly care cadres, and the development of educational materials for caregivers. The outcomes demonstrated active participation of 75 elderly individuals within the first two months, a 32 percent increase in knowledge among 20 trained elderly care cadres, and reduced workload reported by 68 percent of caregivers. Improvements were also recorded in quality of life scores, particularly in life satisfaction and daily activities. Qualitative findings highlighted increased social interaction, motivation, and caregiver confidence. This initiative has encouraged replication in other villages and is expected to contribute positively to the well-being of the elderly population in Lumajang Regency.

Abstract

Introduction: Bite marks are unique to each, differing between one person and another. Several methods to analyse bite mark have been developed during certain periods. However, a standard method to analyse and evaluate the bite mark anatomic variations has not been developed. The objective of this research was to identify the differences of the inter-canine distance on dental cast model, wax impression tracing, radiograph of dental impression tracing, and dental cast tracing methods of the human bite mark. Methods: The subject of the research was as much as 30 consecutive dental cast model, wax impression tracing, radiograph of dental impression tracing, and dental cast tracing for both maxilla and mandible. Measurements performed on each group were conducted in the inter-canine areas using a Vernier calliper. The gold standard that used as a comparator was a dental cast model group on both maxilla and mandible. Comparison of the measurement results was carried out and analysed using a one-way ANOVA test and Tukey LSD test. Results: The average sizes of maxilla and mandible were 37.93 mm and 31.70 mm for dental cast model; 37.93 mm and 32.83 for wax impression tracing; 38.20 mm and 31.70 mm for radiograph dental impression tracing; and 36.65 mm and 30.76 mm of dental cast tracing. The significance value of the maxilla was p = 0.008 (p < 0.05), and the significance value of mandible was p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The inter-canine distance of radiograph tracing group is found to be most similar with dental cast group as gold standard both in the maxilla and the mandible. Keywords: Bite mark, dental cast, wax impression, radiograph, tracing

Abstract

Pola wavy menunjukkan prevalensi paling tinggi. Pola straight mendominasi perempuan, sedangkan pola wavy mendominasi laki-laki.

Abstract

Dental and oral health issues among the elderly are a significant concern as they greatly impact quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community service program in improving knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly in Dieng Village, Klojen District, Malang City. The program was conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry, Brawijaya University (FKG UB). The methods used included an initial survey, health education, dental examination and treatment, as well as evaluation using pre- and post-tests. A total of 49 elderly individuals participated in the program, with 71% being female. Analysis results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from the pre-test (M=10.98, SD=4.29) to the post-test (M=14.12, SD=5.19) with a p-value of 0.000. There was a significant difference based on gender, where females showed better results in the pre-test (M=11.97) and post-test (M=15.23) compared to males. Age was not found to have a significant influence on learning outcomes. The program successfully increased dental care awareness, with 80% of participants reporting improved tooth-brushing habits and a 30% reduction in active caries cases. These results indicate that the community service program effectively enhances knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly.
