Abstract

The Poso conflict, which occurred from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, had a significant social impact on the local community. This study aims to explore the social integration process that took place post-conflict in Poso, Central Sulawesi, focusing on the social harmony created within the plural society. A qualitative approach was used to delve into the experiences, views, and social practices of people from different ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds in their efforts to rebuild communal life. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with various parties, including community leaders, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens who directly experienced the conflict and reconciliation process. The findings show that post-conflict social harmony in Poso was achieved through several key steps, including inter-community dialogue, joint activities involving various community groups, and the active role of religious leaders and local leaders in promoting peace. Additionally, support from the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the form of rehabilitation and reconciliation programs strengthened social integration efforts. This study found that although there were challenges in the reconciliation process, such as distrust and past trauma, consistent efforts to build communication and cooperation between groups successfully created a more harmonious environment. This study provides important insights into the significance of participatory and inclusive approaches in addressing social conflicts and building sustainable integration in plural societies. In conclusion, social harmony in Poso can serve as a model for other regions experiencing similar conflicts, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and the active role of all parties in achieving sustainable peace.

Abstract

This research examines the relationship between urban environmental degradation and community mental health disorders, focusing on the interdependence between the two. Environmental degradation, which includes air pollution, decreasing quality of green spaces, and increasing deterioration of city infrastructure, has been shown to contribute to a decline in the quality of life in urban environments. The impact on people's mental health, such as anxiety, stress, and depression, becomes more significant as environmental conditions worsen. Air quality degradation and lack of open space often affect psychological well-being, increase levels of discomfort, and worsen mental health conditions, especially among people living in more vulnerable areas. This research methodology uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional and longitudinal design to analyze the relationship between environmental degradation and mental health. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling, where the population was divided based on the level of environmental degradation (high, medium, low) in major cities in South Sulawesi. The sample included approximately 500 respondents for the cross-sectional design and 200 respondents for the longitudinal design. Mental health was measured using standardized psychological questionnaires to evaluate levels of anxiety, stress, and depression, while environmental conditions were measured using parameters of air pollution, quality of green open spaces, and infrastructure degradation. The findings suggest that integrated environmental improvements, such as green open space management and pollution control, can improve the physical and psychological conditions of urban residents. This study recommends the design of more environmentally friendly urban policies to improve the quality of life and psychological well-being of city residents.

Abstract

Background: Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal if not treated promptly. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a crucial role in early detection and rapid intervention in this condition. Objective: To determine the role of nurses in managing anaphylactic shock in the emergency department (ED) of a Type B Regional General Hospital. Methods: This was an observational study using a quantitative descriptive approach. Data were obtained through direct observation of nurses' actions using a standard operating procedure (SOP)-based checklist and semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of 30 nurses working in the ED. Results: 76.7% of nurses demonstrated good skills in the initial assessment, but only 60% administered epinephrine injections according to procedure. 83.3% of nurses were able to monitor vital signs regularly and document them appropriately. Conclusion: The role of nurses in managing anaphylactic shock in the ED of a Type B Regional General Hospital is considered adequate, but skills in administering epinephrine and follow-up care are still needed.

Abstract

Infectious disease outbreaks remain a public health threat that can have widespread impacts if not addressed quickly and appropriately. One effective approach to prevention is participatory epidemiological surveillance (SEP), which involves active community involvement in the detection, reporting, and prevention of infectious diseases. This community service activity aims to increase community capacity to recognize infectious disease symptoms, report suspicious health events, and implement community-based preventive measures. The methods used include outreach, health cadre training, case reporting simulations, and evaluation of community understanding. The results of the activity show a significant increase in community knowledge and skills related to early detection and participation in outbreak prevention. It is hoped that this activity will strengthen community-based health systems and increase community resilience to the threat of infectious diseases.

Abstract

Gout or gouty arthritis cases are increasing among the elderly due to unhealthy lifestyles, such as high-purine food consumption, lack of physical activity, and minimal awareness of the importance of healthy behaviors. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and behavior of the elderly in preventing gout through a sociology of health approach, which emphasizes behavioral change based on social interactions, cultural values, and community norms. The implementation method included counseling, training in healthy lifestyle practices, group discussions, and pre- and post-test evaluations. The activity was conducted in Village B, South Sulawesi, involving 30 elderly participants. The materials provided included education on low-purine nutrition, light physical exercise, and the formation of a social support group "Healthy Elderly Without Gout." The activity results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge of 70% after the training and an increase in healthy behaviors, such as reducing offal consumption and increasing physical activity. The sociology of health approach has proven effective because it prioritizes behavioral change based on social support and community learning, rather than solely individual medical interventions. Conclusion: This activity successfully promoted healthy lifestyle changes in the elderly through an integrated social and educational approach. Sustainable programs with cross-sector collaboration are needed to ensure long-term sustainability of behavioral changes.
