Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the meaning of enthusiasm, to observe the responses of enthusiastic students to the speaking activities in the speaking class, and to investigate the factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class. This research belongs to qualitative and it is placed within the phenomenology approach as the collection of information was qualifiedly by examining the phenomena of the factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class at the 5th semester students of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using “coding technique” which covered three types: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The findings showed that Enthusiasm has several meanings such as; feeling or emotion, excitement, eagerness and achieving. Enthusiasm has several functions like; energy enhancer, goal maintainer, curiosity gripper, interest presenter, fire igniters, fear reducer, worry dissolver, and apathy eliminator. There are eight characteristics of enthusiastic students, they are; happiness, curiosity, satisfaction, endurance in speaking, courage, intolerance, agreement, and assistance. The factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class are; the instructional materials used by the lecturers or teachers, the lecturer/teacher competence and performance, the students’ attitude during the speaking activities, and the classroom environment.

Abstract

The research aims at finding out the influence of Word Chain Game in increasing the students’ vocabulary with two research objectives.This research was conducted at MTs Barana Jeneponto Regency in Academic Year 2018/2019. In this research, the population was 60 students in the eighth grade. The sample was 40 students. There were 20 students in Class VIII A as experimental class and 20 students in VIII B as controlled class. The research applied non equivalent control grup design. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test, in fill in the blank form. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was a significant improvement in the students’ vocabulary after being taught using Word Chain Game. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance P = 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 38 indicated that the t-test values of the students’ vocabulary (2.492) was higher than t-table value (2.042). Therefore, word chain game also gives opportunities for the development of teachers, learners, and learning itself. Those opportunities can increase students’ motivation and responsibility, a student-centered approach based on individualization, and also accepting the new and dynamic learner's and teacher's roles.

Abstract

This study focused on the use of lexical collocations in transactional speaking skills of final year students majoring in English. This study aimed to determine the students ability in using lexical collocation and identifiy its type in their transactional speaking. The study conducted in Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The subject of this study were the final year students of English Education Department. These students can be categorized as the intermediate learners of English because they took speaking lectures one to three. It was important for their collocational knowledge to be native-like. This study used a qualitative method. Researcher used interview as the data collection tool. Then, the researcher analysed the transcript of the interview. In analysing, researcher determined the collocation words and the types too, used Oxford online collocation dictionary to check whether the collocation were true or not. The findings showed that the students used English lexical collocations in their transactional speaking. Researcher found 179 English lexical collocations are used by the students. 81 of those collocations are correct. Researcher also found that they used four types from total 6 types (based on Benson&Ilson) of English lexical collocation which they tend to use the type 1 than the other types. The study therefore suggested that the teacher and students should more concerned about the collocational knowledge in this case lexical collocation.
