Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important aspects of learning a second or foreign language. Anxiety is one of the affective factors that influence success in learning English, especially in speaking. The reason for  excessive fear or anxiety in speaking the English language are the fear of making mistakes, the fear of embarrassing oneself, the fear of being laughed, the fear of getting more question from other students, and the fear of standing in front of the class. This study discuss about the use of drama to reduce English speaking anxiety of informatics engineering students at UNIKS. The aim of this study is to find out how anxiety affects the speaking skills of informatics engineering students at UNIKS, and to observe how the drama is effectively solve the anxiety problem to improve the speaking skill of informatics engineering students at UNIKS. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis.The results show that drama is effective in reducing the anxiety of the informatics engineering students at UNIKS in speaking English.

Abstract

This study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s methodological framework. Since its release in 1975, the song has captivated audiences with its intricate composition and enigmatic lyrics, sparking diverse interpretations. This research explores how language and discourse within the lyrics reflect, construct, and challenge dominant ideologies and power structures. Through van Dijk’s model, the study examines the macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure of the song in relation to social cognition and contextual influences. By analyzing linguistic choices, narrative elements, and intertextual meanings, the research reveals how the song navigates themes of identity, defiance, and existential turmoil. The findings indicate that Bohemian Rhapsody extends beyond its musical significance, functioning as a vehicle for cultural critique and social reflection. This study underscores the interdisciplinary relevance of CDA in music analysis, highlighting how discourse in popular songs both shapes and mirrors sociocultural dynamics, reinforcing their role in critical discourse studies.

Abstract

The tradition of pacu jalur is one of the ancient cultures and traditions in Kuantan Singingi. Culture and language are closely related because the function of language itself is a tool for cultural development and an inventory of cultural traits. The relationship between different languages and cultures is ethnolinguistics. One of the cultures in Indonesia is mantra, which is one of the oral traditions. Mantra is considered as the oldest literary work and one of the aspects of ancient culture in Indonesia that is still maintained today. In this study, an ethnolinguistic study was conducted on the mantra of pacu jalur tradition in Kenegerian Kari Kecamatan Kuantan Tengah Kabupaten Kuantan Singingi. The method used is qualitative-descriptive. This study shows how the sound and language of mantras in the tradition of pacu jalur, non-verbal aspects in the ritual of pacu jalur, language style, diction, denotative and connotative meaning in the mantra of pacu jalur.

Abstract

Promiscuity, a recurring theme in literature, is examined through various lenses, reflecting the complexities of human relationships, societal norms, and cultural contexts. In Eka Kurniawan's novel Lelaki Harimau, promiscuity serves as a thematic lens through which Kurniawan explores the intricate interplay of desire, power, and societal expectations. This paper aims to delve into the portrayal of promiscuity in Lelaki Harimau, employing a sociology of literature approach combined with a qualitative descriptive method. Through close textual analysis and thematic exploration, the study seeks to unravel the cultural, social, and psychological dimensions of promiscuity as depicted in the novel. The research findings highlight the destructive consequences of unchecked hedonism, as exemplified by characters like Anwar Sadat and his daughter Laila. Furthermore, the study discusses how Kurniawan's narrative challenges entrenched notions of morality and sexuality, urging readers to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature and societal constructs. Ultimately, Lelaki Harimau emerges not only as a compelling work of literature but also as a powerful commentary on the enduring relevance of literature in illuminating social issues and advocating for positive change.
