Abstract

This article has an objective to discuss Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. It focuses on the concepts of denotative meaning, connotative meaning and mythological meaning and builds upon Ferdinand de Saussure’s foundational semiotics. This research has a common methodological way of writing that is by using qualitative method or library research. The result of discussion is applicable to Barthes’ theory in comprehending of sign ways to account for cultural and ideological dimensions. His model of myth as a second order of semiological systems offers a powerful frame work for comprehending the ways in which everyday objects and media carry deeper ideological meanings. Through the analysis of selected texts of media, this research postulates how denotation and connotation are exemplified and providing literal and non-literal meanings. Denotative meaning provides literal meaning, connotation gives interpretative depth or individual meaning, as myth naturalizes ideological construction and it becomes part of artificial meanings. This article makes the conclusion that Barthes’ theory of semiotics is essential for critically decoding message in contemporary media culture.

Abstract

This paper investigates the provocative question: can artificial intelligence (AI) know things? through an epistemological lens. Drawing upon a systematic literature review (SLR) of works published 2010–2020, the study maps how scholars have applied classical and contemporary epistemic criteria—such as belief‑likeness, truth, justification, reliability, interpretability, and epistemic agency—to AI systems. In doing so, it examines competing theoretical frameworks (internalism, externalism, virtue epistemology, Bayesian approaches) and identifies areas of convergence and contention. The review reveals that while many AI systems satisfy externalist criteria of reliability and truth‑tracking under controlled conditions, they often fall short of internalist demands for justificatory transparency or reflective access. Opacity and “black‑box” architectures remain central obstacles to attributing knowledge in the classical sense. Furthermore, the influence of AI on human belief formation and the shift in epistemic environments suggest that even absent true knowledge, AI plays a significant role in mediating knowledge practices. Ethical and normative considerations (e.g. fairness, accountability, epistemic justice) also emerge as inseparable from epistemological assessments, prompting calls for a “glass‑box epistemology” that integrates design, interpretability, and value sensitivity. In concluding, the paper argues that AI may function as a contributor to human knowledge workflows rather than as autonomous knowers. It sets out a nuanced perspective: acknowledging AI’s epistemic potential while remaining critical of overextensions. Finally, it suggests future paths: refining epistemic thresholds, embedding interpretability in AI design, and expanding the discourse across cultural and disciplinary contexts.

Abstract

Language and knowledge are fundamentally intertwined, shaping how individuals perceive, interpret, and express reality. This study investigates epistemic verbs as linguistic indicators of knowledge and belief within two distinct epistemological and cultural frameworks: English and Mandarin Chinese. By adopting a qualitative descriptive–comparative approach, grounded in functional linguistics and epistemic discourse analysis, this research explores how epistemic verbs reflect the ways speakers conceptualize truth, certainty, and cognition. The data were collected from authentic corpora—including dialogues, news articles, academic essays, and conversational transcripts—and analyzed through semantic, pragmatic, and cultural dimensions using triangulated methods. Findings reveal that English epistemic verbs (e.g., know, believe, think, guess) form a hierarchical and explicit epistemic system, emphasizing rational certainty, empirical evidence, and individual cognition, consistent with Western philosophical traditions. In contrast, Mandarin epistemic verbs (e.g., 知道 zhīdào, 认为 rènwéi, 觉得 juéde, 相信 xiāngxìn) display contextual, relational, and affective orientations, integrating emotion and social harmony in the expression of knowledge, reflecting an Eastern holistic worldview. Comparative analysis demonstrates that English expresses epistemic stance vertically, based on degrees of certainty, while Mandarin expresses it horizontally, emphasizing social context and relational appropriateness. These contrasts highlight deeper philosophical divides between Western rationalism and Eastern relational holism, suggesting that linguistic forms mirror epistemological ideologies. The study concludes that epistemic verbs are not mere grammatical categories but cognitive-cultural constructs that embody each society’s way of “knowing” and “believing.” Understanding these differences is vital for intercultural communication, as epistemic misalignment often leads to pragmatic misunderstanding between English and Mandarin speakers. This research contributes to the emerging field of cross-cultural epistemic linguistics, offering insights into how language, cognition, and culture collectively shape the human expression of knowledge.

Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic meanings embedded in the traditional ceremonies of the Batu Bara Malay community as expressed through English descriptions. These rituals are rich in cultural values and communicative intentions. However, they have rarely been examined from a linguistic perspective that focuses on language use in context. The main objective of this research is to investigate how ritual expressions such as blessings, symbolic utterances, and culturally marked instructions are conveyed in translated or interpreted English texts. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in speech act theory and ethno-pragmatics, data were collected from four primary sources: interviews with cultural figures (35%), ritual observations with audio-video recordings (30%), bilingual document analysis (25%), and field notes on the ceremonial context (10%). The results indicate that 67% of English translations partially retained the original communicative force, 23% showed significant meaning shifts, particularly in indirect speech acts and politeness strategies, and only 10% fully preserved the original sociocultural intentions. These findings reveal the complexity of maintaining cultural meanings in cross-linguistic communication and the potential for meaning loss during translation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural pragmatics in multilingual translation and highlights the importance of culturally sensitive translation practices. It concludes that such practices are crucial to preserving the sociocultural integrity of local traditions and promoting more effective intercultural understanding.

Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of Indonesia's most critical social issues, with thousands of cases reported annually and only a small proportion addressed legally. While global feminist movements like #MeToo and Ni Una Menos have been widely studied, there is limited research on localized feminist activism, particularly in regional contexts. This study explores the Women’s March Medan as a localized form of feminist resistance to GBV, aiming to understand how it raises awareness, builds solidarity, critiques structural inequalities, and navigates cultural and religious barriers. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with six participants, document analysis, media reviews, and direct field observations. Thematic analysis identified five main themes: (1) elevating vulnerable groups and critiquing structural violence, (2) symbolic actions as political statements, (3) constructing awareness of GBV, (4) localization of global feminist discourses, and (5) reclaiming public space amidst backlash. The findings highlight that the Women’s March Medan is not a mere replication of international feminist models but a localized adaptation blending global solidarity with Indonesia’s socio-cultural and religious contexts. This study contributes to feminist scholarship by demonstrating how grassroots activism in Medan transforms mourning into protest, negotiates legitimacy within cultural and religious frameworks, and asserts feminist presence in contested public spaces. It also offers insights into how local feminist movements adapt global discourses to respond to GBV in distinct socio-political environments.

Abstract

Semiotics thus includes different resources, such as language, images, music, sound and embodied action, and the meanings which arise as choices from these resources combine in semiotic phenomena such as texts, interactions and events (KAY L O’HALLORAN: 2020). This research is concerned with the symbolic meaning of Manuk Rulu in Karonese Marriage Tradition. Manuk Rulu is a tradition or culture in Karo people usually presented by the couple of marriage and the groom’s parents to Kalimbubu. It indicates the respect given to Kalimbubu in the hope that through the pray of them to the Almighty God, the marriage couple can get harmonious, happy, peaceful life and getting descendant, son and daughter. The aim of this research is to find and elaborate the symbolic meaning of Manuk Rulu in Karo tradition. This tradition is found in Deli Serdang Region. Manuk Rulu consists of: Manuk Raja Mulia “the symbol of Respectfulness, Loyalty, Obedience to Kalimbubu so that through this tribute hopingly the marriage couple can get blessing from God. The result of this research can be shown here such as those symbolic meanings are found here such such bravery in facing the life, sincere heart, quality or glory of speech. The method of research is done by descriptive qualitative research proposed by Hancock (1998). The main theory to support this research is the theory of Semiotics by Charles Sanders Pierce (1990). This research can be concluded that the local tradition of Karo people can reflect the Semiotic Symbols which are considered valuable to the language learners.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a system that is developed and continues to innovate in various fields with the aim of making human work easier. As the name suggests, artificial intelligence is made to resemble human intelligence and is applied in various fields. Currently Artificial Intelligence technology is also used in the field of education, including teaching foreign languages. This article, which is based on a short field study, aims to find out student references regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in English Language Teaching (ELT) can be seen as both a benefit and a potential threat, depending on how it is used and implemented. On the one hand, AI technology has the potential to make language learning more efficient and effective, by providing personalized feedback and practice exercises tailored to the different student’s needs and learning styles. The research method used to determine this phenomenon is a qualitative descriptive research method with questionnaire data collection techniques by asking questions that can be answered directly by respondents according to their respective answers. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to play an important role in helping students in various tasks in learning English, i.e finding out the the meaning and definition of words, translating sentences, improving grammar, etc with reliable and timely results. However, on the other hand, AI has an impact on student abilities. Students are increasingly dependent on AI assistance in learning, thereby reducing its role in critical thinking and using memory
