Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to examine the role of social comparison in predicting two dimensions of a moral emotion, i.e. shame, among employees working in the private companies in the Greatcity of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The participants were 203 employees (99 males, 104 females, age average 28.75 years old, and standard deviation of the age 5.917 years), taken using purposive sampling technique. The measurement scales of this study were adapted and developed from Social Comparison Scale and Shame Proneness Scale. As many as 60 individuals participated in the measurement instrument’s validity and reliability testing phase. Research design of this study is predictive correlational with simple linear regression as the statistical technique of data analysis. This study found that social comparison can predict Negative Self-Evaluation and Withdrawal Action Tendency, as the dimensions of shame, in negative ways. There are at least two theoretical contributions of this research to the literature of psychology of corruption. First, self-evaluation as a result of the general social comparison, which initially has no moral weight, can have serious implications on one’s morality, especially through the negative self-evaluation dimension of shame moral emotion. Second, this study provides scientific support to the everyday wisdom suggesting that we should not compare ourselves with others so as not to fall into immorality tendencies, including corruption.KEY WORD: Emotion, moral, shame, comparison, social, employees working, Jakarta city, self-evaluation, predict, and psychology of corruption. About the Authors: Yessy Noerhardiyanty, S.Psi. is an Alumna of Psychology Department, Faculty of Humanities BINUS (Bina Nusantara University) in Jakarta; and Juneman Abraham, M.Si. is the Faculty Member-Subject Content Coordinator (FM-SCC) of Community Psychology Studies at the Bina Nusantara University, BINUS Kampus Kijang, Jalan Kemanggisan Ilir III No.45, Palmerah, Jakarta 11480, Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract

The management of mass public transportation requires the psychology of transportation in order to design and operate a transportation system which suits the social psychology dimension of urban citizens. The aim of this research is to examine the role of personality traits, sedentariness, and personal dilemma in predicting the intention of a particular group of urban citizens to switch from using private cars to using mass public transportation. This research uses the predictive correlational design, while the research data are analyzed using the multiple linear regression technique in order to identify the main effects and interaction effects of variables which may serve as the predictors of intention. This research involves 280 university students (111 males and 169 females, with Mage = 20.90 years old and SDage = 1.943 years old) who live in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and its surrounding urban areas as samples. The research finds that, among the Big Five personality traits, conscientiousness is the only trait which can significantly predict the intention of private car users, while sedentariness is not capable of predicting such intention. The research also finds that losses in terms of time and safety incurred from the use of private cars can lead to a much stronger intention to switch to mass public transportation. The implications of this research on the development of policies regarding transportation are elaborated in the final section of this paper.

Abstract

There are only a few empirical researches which connect the individual sexual behavior with the individual’s perspective in viewing the world (worldview), although speculations related to that matter have already existed in the literature. This research carried out measurement of participant’s worldview using Worldview Analysis Scale as well as participant’s sexual behavior using Garos Sexual Behavior Inventory. The participants of this research consisted of 200 people (52% male, 48% female; age average 24.23 years; standard deviation of the age 1.92 years) who were obtained by convenience sampling techniques in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, and Surabaya. The results show that there are correlations between communalism worldview and sexual discordance as well as tangible realism worldview and sexual discordance.

Abstract

One way of making scholarships sustainable is to continue the “chain of kindness.” However, relatively few studies have examined the psychological predictors involved in making a scholarship recipient feel that “pay it forward” is under their control. This study aimed to determine the predictions of four types of narcissism on Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) in continuing scholarship. The instruments used comprised psychological scales measuring PBC, which were constructed by the authors, and some types of narcissism, i.e. the Communal Narcissism Inventory (CNI), Brief-Pathological Narcissism Inventory (B-PNI), and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI). Data were obtained by convenience sampling from 212 Indonesian scholarship recipients and analyzed with multiple linear regression (predictive correlational design). The results showed that the regression model had statistical significance (F(4, 211)= 15.452, p = .000, R2 = 23%). A notable result was that communal narcissism predicted PBC in a positive direction. Narcissism often has negative connotations; however, the results contribute by showing that there is also a “bright side” of narcissism.

Abstract

The dominance of WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) countries in global psychology research limits the diversity of perspectives. This affects the indexing and global exposure of psychology research from countries outside these categories, one of which is Indonesia. ANIMA Indonesian Psychological Journal, as one of the Indonesian psychology journals committed to international standards, has taken a number of steps to increase global access to Indonesian psychology, with the ultimate goal of realizing a more inclusive psychology. These steps are explained in more detail in this editorial article.

Abstract

This bibliometric analysis explores the contributions of Indonesian scholars to global psychology research, providing a comprehensive overview of its growth, trends, and impact in journals indexed in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). A systematic search of scholarly databases from 1992 to 2023 identified 1,174 documents, including 717 articles with at least one Indonesian author. The analysis covers various indicators: (1) publication types; (2) article and citation count; (3) journal categories; as well as (4) collaborative countries and institutional contributions. Results show that articles are the dominant publication type, with data papers having the highest citation impact. Research output has significantly increased since 2010, peaking at 147 articles in 2022. The citation histories of the top ten most-cited articles reveal varying degrees of impact over time. Multidisciplinary psychology and social psychology are the most published categories. International collaboration plays a vital role, with 81% of articles involving partnerships, particularly with the United States of America (USA). Universitas Indonesia emerges as the most productive state university, while Universitas Bina Nusantara as the most productive private university. While the increase in publications is noteworthy, the situation requires a more nuanced and contextual discussion. The interplay between publication quantity, research quality, and the broader research landscape warrants a deeper examination and wise interpretation. Analyzing titles, abstracts, author keywords, and Keywords Plus uncovers research strengths and enhances our understanding of research trends, collaboration patterns, and publication influence.

Abstract

The renewed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Himpunan Psikologi Indonesia (HIMPSI; Indonesian Psychological Association) and the American Psychological Association (APA), originally signed in 2020 and updated in 2025, marks a significant opportunity for Indonesian psychology to expand its contribution on the global stage. This editorial highlights the underrepresentation of Indonesian-language psychological assessments in the APA PsycTests® database and identifies structural barriers, such as the absence of a standardized national documentation system. By showcasing the vast potential of locally developed and adapted psychological tools, this article proposes concrete strategies to foster active participation from Indonesia and other underrepresented communities in developing evidence-based and contextually relevant psychological science. Proposed strategies include empowering individual researchers to submit locally developed or adapted instruments, encouraging institutions and journals to adopt systematic documentation and reporting standards, and establishing a national task force led by professional associations and consortia to coordinate the registration and certification of psychological tests for inclusion in APA PsycTests®. This editorial serves as an open invitation to join a global dialogue in which psychological science is enriched by diverse voices, cultural contexts, and lived experiences from across the world.

Abstract

In the field of psychology, we witness and experience rapid development of ideas about humans, especially in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, where psychology will accept the influence of cybernetic ideas. As a researcher in psychology who is diligent in observing human behavior, repeatedly in our minds, various "hypotheses" about the dynamics of human behavior complexes emerge. Especially in Indonesia, the fertile place where the complex dynamics is wrapped in cultural diversity. It is urgent to publish these “hypothetical thoughts” - also a response to the results of peer studies - in a solid, communicative, and persuasive form; so that it can be followed up by peers with pleasure. This is one of the pathways for the development of psychological science which, honestly and regretfully, is still rare by scientific journals of psychology in Indonesia. The way we communicate psychological science, thus, is no longer "accommodated" by one or two forms of scientific publications, such as original articles or reviews (both narrative and systematic). The world of Indonesian scientific publications can learn from the world of journalistic publications that have already accustomed to the communication between the "citizens" of the media. As an example is The Jakarta Post which has a specific rubric for Letter to Editor (LtE) which is very passionate. Hans Selye once wrote one of the legendary Letter to Editors (LtEs), and that letter opened the way for scientific studies on stress. Therefore, ANIMA Indonesian Psychological Journal encourages the readers to send their extraordinary ideas through Letter to Editor (LtE). Following up on this invitation, we will hold activities and develop supporting products. The existence of training, assistance, and guidelines for writing Letter to Editor (LtE) is expected to foster Letter to Editor (LtE) writing habits as an alternative to quality publications, and not as a new variant of academic integrity deviations.
