Abstract

This study investigated the challenges facing online and physical classrooms in higher institutions. Descriptive research of the survey type was employed to achieve the purpose of this study. Students from five randomly selected faculties at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria made up the study target population. To choose the sample from each of the selected faculties, a proportionate sampling procedure was used. The actual sample size for the study was 200 Undergraduates, who were chosen using random selection techniques. Descriptive statistics of the mean score were used to analyze the information obtained from the respondents. The findings of this study show that students faced challenges while learning in both online and physical classrooms. It was concluded that despite the underlying similarities between online and physical classrooms, the two modalities are very different from one another. Online teaching is typically student-centered which necessitates active learning, in contrast to traditional classroom instruction, which has been known to be teachers-centered and calls for passive learning. It was a challenge for teachers to move from face-to-face in-class mode to virtual learning, changing their teaching methodologies, and managing their time. It was also a challenge to develop content that not only covers the curriculum but also engages the learners.

Abstract

This study investigated the awareness and perception of the utilization of Open Educational Resources (OER) for learning among primary education undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. The study adopted the descriptive research of survey type. This study was limited to the primary education undergraduate students in the Adult and Primary Education Department, University of Ilorin. 150 undergraduates were randomly selected from the department. Structured questionnaires were used to elicit a response from the respondents. The finding of this study shows that undergraduate students are aware of OER's learning tools. Primary education undergraduate students’ perception towards OERs tool for learning is positive, there are factors inhibiting effective use of OER for learning among students, undergraduate students used OERs site for learning, and there was no significant difference between male and female undergraduates’ perception of OER tools for learning. Based on the findings of this research, the following recommendation was made. Lecturers should endeavor to put their scholastic publications in the public domain of their institutions, as this will help the student to lay hands on more quality materials and the government should provide funds to ensure the stability of the OER movement.

Abstract

Virtual Classrooms (VCs) are digital platforms that create an atmosphere by integrating internet technologies in which instructors, students. Scholars and interested persons can engage, connect, communicate and describe their thought and opinions in a well-organized, pedagogical, and professional manner. The study investigated lecturers’ perceived proficiency in the use of VCs for teaching and learning in colleges of education in Ondo State, south-western Nigeria. The objectives were to (i) investigate lecturers’ perceived proficiency in the use of Virtual Classrooms for instruction; (ii) determine the difference in lecturers’ gender on their perceived proficiency in the use of virtual classrooms for instruction; and (iii) investigate lecturers’ perceived proficiency in the use of virtual classrooms for instruction based on years of experience. Questionnaires were administered to 298 lecturers. Findings indicated that irrespective of gender, lecturers’ perceived proficiency towards the use of VCs do not vary, while lecturers’ perceived proficiency are influenced by their years of teaching experience with a statistical value of t (298) = 4.86, p = .000) in favor of less experienced lecturers’. The study recommended among others that concerned agencies and school management should sensitize, train, and provide an enabling environment that will encourage the use of VCs among COE lecturers irrespective of gender and years of teaching experience.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to bridge the gap created by classroom learning by incorporating the power of current technological innovation, especially the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among primary education undergraduates. This study presumed that to make a successful transition to knowledge-based education, the introduction of AI would be a necessary tool to shift Nigerian education from analog to digital. Hence, this study investigated the primary education student competency in the use of AI for learning. This study adopted descriptive research of the survey type. The findings of the study were that majority of the primary education undergraduates are not skilled and incompetent in the use of AI for learning. There was no significant difference between male and female primary education undergraduate’s competency in the use of AI for learning. There was no significant difference in primary education undergraduate’s competency in the use of AI for learning based on university proprietorship. Students' ability to explore digital resources such as AI depends on their access to digital technologies. AI technologies should be made available, open, and accessible to primary education undergraduates, to encourage them to utilize the technologies for learning to improve learners’ capability towards achieving better academic performance.
