Abstract

Abstract

Maqâshid al-Qur’ân in the Verses of Religious Freedom in Interpretation of Thahâ Jâbir al-’Alwânî. This article is aimed at describing Thahâ Jâbir al-‘Alwânî’s interpretation on various verses dealing with the issues of religious freedom. Adapting an approach of maqâshid al-Qur’ân, the present paper comes to answer two main issues on the true of Alwânî’s maqâshid al-Qur’ân perception and the theoretical application of Alwânî’s maqâshid al-Qur’ân in interpreting verses of religious freedom. According to ‘Alwânî, it was concluded that there are three main segments that he called al-maqâshid al-Qur’âniyyah al-hâkimah: (1) al-tawhîd, (2) al-tazkiyah, and (3) al-‘umrân. ‘Alwânî stated that freedom of interfaith religion is important goal of sharia meaning. Freedom of interfaith religion, on the other hand, is one of the important embodiments in believing the God and tauhid. Seeing this pattern, the later purpose of the Quran is tazkiyah. This term is a value that enables people apply the message, fulfill the promise, and can perform the tasks of the caliphate. When such principles are implemented, something appears that Alwânî called ‘umrân as the next purpose of the Quran can be manifested well. ‘Umrân or ‘prosperity’ in which human being performs as a khalifah actually can create baldatun thayyibatun wa rabbun ghafûr as the real welfare.

Abstract

This research examines the epistemology of thematic Qur’anic interpretation through a comparative analysis of the methodological frameworks developed by ‘Abd al-Ḥayy al-Farmāwī and Abdullah Saeed. The study aims to identify the epistemological similarities and differences between the two scholars, particularly regarding the sources of interpretive authority, the role of context, value orientation, and their methodological implications for contemporary thematic exegesis. Employing qualitative library research, this study applies an epistemological and comparative approach to the primary works of both scholars and relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that al-Farmāwī represents a textual-normative and systematic epistemology of thematic interpretation, emphasizing the internal coherence of Qur’anic verses. In contrast, Abdullah Saeed advances a contextual and value-oriented epistemology that highlights the dynamic interaction between the Qur’anic text, the historical context of revelation, and contemporary realities. Despite these differences, both approaches converge in their rejection of atomistic interpretation and their commitment to a comprehensive thematic method. This study argues that integrating textual coherence and contextual relevance offers a significant pathway for the further development of thematic Qur’anic interpretation in contemporary Islamic scholarship

Abstract

Creativity and innovation are essential competencies for elementary school students; however, learning practices in many Indonesian elementary schools remain teacher-centered and provide limited opportunities for creative and innovative activities. In addition, local cultural values that can support contextual learning are often underutilized. Therefore, this study aims to develop a learning model grounded in Madurese local wisdom that employs STEAM as an integrative instructional approach to enhance students’ creativity and innovation at the elementary school level. This study used a research and development method with the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The effectiveness of the developed model was tested using a one-group pretest–posttest design. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, documentation, pretest–posttest instruments, and product-based assessments. Students’ creativity was measured using Torrance indicators (fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration), while innovation was assessed through indicators of idea adaptation, simple implementation, usefulness, and initiative appropriate to elementary students’ developmental levels. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain, and paired-sample t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, display, and verification. The results indicate that the developed learning model is valid, practical, and effective. Students’ creativity increased from 57.3 to 86.6, and innovation increased from 55.8 to 84.1, with moderate-to-high N-Gain scores. The model supports contextual and culture-based learning by strengthening creativity, innovation, and STEAM-related competencies while preserving Madurese local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sociological approach in Qur’anic interpretation through the double movement method developed by Fazlur Rahman. The focus of the study is directed toward three main issues: first, the methodological framework of the double movement in the process of Qur’anic interpretation; second, the ways in which this method represents a sociological approach to the Qur’an; and third, the extent to which the double movement method is relevant for analyzing contemporary social problems. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library-based research design, using primary data from Fazlur Rahman’s works and scholarly journal articles that discuss contextual and social approaches to Qur’anic interpretation. Data analysis is conducted through descriptive-analytical techniques and contextual hermeneutical analysis. The findings indicate that the double movement method has a systematic methodological framework, consisting of an interpretive movement from the socio-historical context of revelation toward the formulation of universal moral principles, followed by an applicative movement that projects these principles into contemporary social contexts. This method represents a sociological approach to the Qur’an by emphasizing the analysis of social realities as a fundamental basis for understanding the text, thereby positioning the Qur’an as a revelation that actively engages with human social problems. Furthermore, the double movement method is highly relevant for analyzing various modern social issues, such as social justice, pluralism, gender relations, and public ethics, as it effectively bridges the normative values of the Qur’an with the dynamics of modern society.

Abstract

This study examines approaches to understanding hadiths concerning the practice of wearing garments below the ankles (isbāl) through the framework of mukhtalif al-hadith. The issue of isbāl has generated diverse scholarly interpretations due to the presence of seemingly divergent prophetic narrations, some of which convey unconditional prohibition while others explicitly link the prohibition to moral intentions such as arrogance and pride. This research employs a qualitative library-based methodology, analyzing primary hadith collections alongside classical and contemporary scholarly works to explore patterns of interpretation and methodological reasoning. The findings reveal that hadiths on isbāl can be classified into two main textual categories: unconditional prohibitions and intention-based condemnations. Divergent legal conclusions among scholars are shown to stem primarily from methodological orientations rather than from disagreements over hadith authenticity. Scholars adopting literal-textual approaches tend to uphold a general prohibition, whereas those employing contextual and reconciliatory methods emphasize harmonization (al-jam‘ wa al-tawfīq) by interpreting the narrations within their ethical and socio-historical contexts. This study further demonstrates that ethical orientation emerges as the central interpretive outcome of isbāl hadiths. The prophetic guidance consistently prioritizes moral values such as humility, social equality, and the avoidance of arrogance over rigid formal regulation of dress length. By integrating textual classification, methodological analysis, and ethical interpretation, this research contributes to contemporary hadith studies by offering a coherent framework for addressing cases of mukhtalif al-hadith and reinforcing the relevance of ethical coherence in responsible and contextual hadith interpretation.

Abstract

This study discusses the phenomenon of Musykil al-Ḥadīth (hadiths that appear contradictory or are difficult to understand textually) concerning the difference in eating patterns between believers and disbelievers, symbolized by the expressions “one intestine” and “seven intestines.” Through a hermeneutical approach grounded in classical Islamic scholarship, this article explains that such wording functions as a metaphor for zuhd (asceticism) and self-restraint. The findings indicate that the essence of this hadith is an injunction toward qana’ah (contentment) and a warning against the harmful effects of greed on both physical and spiritual health. To uncover the intended meaning of the hadith, this research employs a hermeneutical method by referring to the sharḥ (commentaries) of prominent scholars. Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī emphasizes that the expression should not be understood literally (biologically), but rather as a tamsīl (figurative illustration). Imam al-Nawawī explains that the hadith serves as motivation to minimize excessive attachment to worldly pleasures. Meanwhile, Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr views the hadith as praise for believers who are able to restrain their worldly desires. The core of this study concludes that “one intestine” represents the values of zuhd and qana’ah. A believer is expected to take sustenance only as needed, whether in food, clothing, or work. The fundamental principle is “eating to live” in order to maintain strength for worship, rather than “living to eat” to satisfy desire. Contentment (qana’ah) is thus regarded as a key to success for a Muslim. The research also examines the sociological and health impacts of excessive consumption (greed). Based on the studied materials on consumption ethics, Islam regulates that the stomach should not be filled completely; the ideal division is one-third for food, one-third for drink, and one-third for breathing. Regarding spiritual and physical impacts, excessive satiety, according to Imam al-Shāfi‘ī, can harden the heart, diminish intelligence, cause lethargy, and weaken enthusiasm for worship.
