Studying radicalism among youth is essential to understand their thoughts on societal problems often associated with radicalism issues. There is a view that youth is the target of changes in understanding and religious and social behavior from groups that claim to be radicalized. Therefore, the understanding and perspective of youth will be beneficial to see the issue of social-religious movements in Aceh. This study is based on an ethnographic study in which the author conducted several interviews in Banda Aceh and several areas in Aceh province. In addition to conducting a bibliographical study, the authors conducted in-depth interviews to understand the informants' backgrounds. To find out their views on the issues in the radicalism movement, the author conducted an FGD with several youths. This study found three youth groups in the study of Islamic movements in Aceh: A first group is an underground group, which is not so visible among the younger generation of Muslims, but among activists of Islamic organizations and specific figures who continue to make upgrades. A second group is a group that prioritizes the power of social media and always carries out a process of religious discussion and responds to any current issues related to "threats to Islam." Third, those who have good relationships with various religious and community leaders. This study will undoubtedly provide meaningful input for academics and policymakers in understanding and dealing with the problem of radicalism among youth.

Abstract

The study delves into the response of the younger generation of Muslims in Banda Aceh to contemporary issues in Indonesia. It aims to investigate their perspectives on religious tolerance and their attitudes towards socio-political issues in Indonesia. The author employed in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to gain insights into the mindset of the young Muslim populace in Banda Aceh. The study unearthed a notable shift in the acquisition of religious knowledge, primarily through digital mediums, leading to a diminished association of violence and extremism with religious discord. The young Muslims of Banda Aceh exhibit a substantial inclination towards tolerance and nationalism. However, they hold firm in their unwillingness to compromise when tolerance undermines their religious convictions. Furthermore, they assert that national issues intertwined with Islam do not sway their overarching outlook on the nation and state.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the history of religious imagination and contestation in Nusantara. It will trace the issue of transformation of Islamic thought as religious imagination from Middle East to the region by looking at the network of Muslim scholars, the development of institution, and the distribution of religious ideas in kitabs. I will utilize socio-historical approach as means to understanding the early development of Islamic intellectual. It is said that Aceh as the first place of Islamization process in Nusantara. It can be seen from the early historical facts such as Kingdoms of Peureulak, role of ‘ulama of Pasai, and institution of dayah as place of reproduction of ‘ulama in the region. It is argued that there have been many of anthropological and archaeological evidences that had influenced the early reproduction of Islamic thought in Southeast Asia. In addition, this study will also examine the current potrait of contestation among Muslim in political landscape in the country. It indicates that the identity of Muslim has to do with the roots of historical narrative in the Nusantara.

Abstract

Religion is a sensitive issue for the Acehnese Muslim community. However, the practice of religion and culture of marine safety for coastal communities, primarily fishers, is significant, although sometimes it cannot be separated from magical things. This paper aimed to describe how the religion and customs of salvation run in harmony among the people of East Aceh are solid with the tradition of Islamic law. This research results from an empirical study with a phenomenological approach that seeks to see people’s behavior in celebrating marine safety. The source of the data was obtained from the coastal communities of East Aceh who were directly involved with the practice of the kenduri laot tradition. Empirical research was conducted on a coastal Muslim community located in the eastern part of Aceh. This paper argued that the phenomenon of maritime security carried out by coastal Muslim communities is a tradition that previous people have practiced. However, the coastal Muslim community of East Aceh is very thick with Islamic teachings. However, the marine safety tradition is important because it contains a philosophical aspect still maintained today. The Islamization of the kenduri la’ōt practice wrapped in Islamic events eliminates the mystical impression. This illustrated that there is a dialectic shift from a naturalistic tradition to a theological tradition; the belief that is built by the community is that there is a compromise between tradition and religion to create harmonious conditions, religion becomes the spirit and supporter in the celebration of marine safety, and this is what makes the practice of kenduri la’ōt (sea safety) survive.

Abstract

The cross-cultural differences experienced by pilgrims during the world’s largest religious ritual, ḥajj, have yet to be explored. It is worthwhile to investigate this issue from an Indonesian perspective. This study uses a phenomenological approach to examine cross-cultural differences experienced by Acehnese pilgrims during ḥajj. The perceptions of Acehnese who have never been to Mecca (‘villagers’) and Acehnese who stayed in Saudi Arabia and its neighbouring countries (‘stayers’) were also probed. The findings show that the pilgrims experienced cross-cultural differences in verbal communication, body movement, physical appearance and dress, the use of space, time, touch, voice, and smell. Cross-culturally, the pilgrims have a different perspective to villagers and stayers. The pilgrims expressed culture shock, while the villagers’ perceptions were primarily shaped by imagined and unverified stories, and the stayers understood their pilgrimage through their long experiences of residing in Arab countries.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i1.5356
