Abstract

Kualitas lingkungan dalam ruang (Indoor Environmental Quality/IEQ) memainkan peran penting dalam memastikan lingkungan belajar yang aman dan sehat, terutama di laboratorium kesehatan di mana paparan terhadap polutan udara dapat meningkat. Penelitian ini mengevaluasi IEQ pada sepuluh ruang laboratorium yang terletak di lantai satu dan dua Poltekkes Riau, dengan fokus pada konsentrasi karbon dioksida (CO₂), formaldehida (HCHO), total senyawa organik volatil (TVOC), dan partikel udara (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10). Menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif, pengukuran kualitas udara dilakukan pada berbagai kondisi aktivitas dan ventilasi, dan hasilnya dianalisis berdasarkan ambang batas paparan yang diizinkan sesuai dengan Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan Republik Indonesia Nomor 48 Tahun 2016. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa beberapa ruang laboratorium memiliki tingkat polutan yang melebihi standar nasional, khususnya untuk PM2.5, PM10, dan HCHO. Faktor-faktor penyebabnya meliputi kepadatan hunian ruang yang tinggi, desain ventilasi yang kurang optimal, dan emisi dari material interior sintetis. Rekomendasi mencakup penerapan strategi ventilasi silang, penggunaan pemurni udara dengan filter HEPA, pemasangan exhaust fan, serta penggantian material yang memiliki emisi tinggi. Studi ini menekankan pentingnya pengelolaan kualitas udara secara proaktif di laboratorium pendidikan untuk melindungi kesehatan penghuni dan mendukung kepatuhan terhadap regulasi.

Abstract

Indoor air quality (IAQ) in educational laboratories is critical for safeguarding occupant health and structural integrity. Elevated CO₂ levels (>1,000 ppm) impair cognitive function and cause drowsiness, while formaldehyde (HCHO) emissions from building materials are carcinogenic (Group 1 IARC) and trigger respiratory inflammation. Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) induce sick building syndrome through chronic exposure, damaging neurological and hepatic systems. Particulate matter poses multifaceted threats: PM₁₀ deposits in upper airways causing irritation, PM₂.₅ penetrates lung alveoli increasing cardiovascular mortality risk (WHO, 2021), and PM₁.₀ translocates to bloodstream carrying adsorbed toxins. Beyond health impacts, these pollutants degrade building systems—PM accumulation corrodes HVAC components, HCHO embrittles organic materials, and TVOCs form surface films that accelerate wear. This study quantitatively assessed IAQ in ten Poltekkes Riau laboratories against Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 48/2016 thresholds. Real-time measurements of CO₂, HCHO, TVOC, and particulate fractions (PM₁.₀/PM₂.₅/PM₁₀) were conducted under active/inactive ventilation modes. Results revealed widespread noncompliance: 80% of labs exceeded PM₂.₅/PM₁₀ limits during ventilation downtime, while microbiology and health promotion labs showed hazardous TVOC (max 1,200 µg/m³) and HCHO (max 120 ppb) concentrations. These findings demonstrate systemic IAQ failures, necessitating urgent ventilation upgrades and low-emission material retrofits to mitigate health risks and preserve building functionality.

Abstract

This study examines indoor air quality (IAQ) in Poltekkes Riau's laboratory building through systematic measurement of six parameters: CO₂, HCHO, TVOC, PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 per Minister of Health Regulation No. 48/2016. Direct measurements were conducted in ten laboratories under three operational conditions (active use, no activity, ventilation shutdown) across different time intervals. Results reveal significant deviations from standards: 60% of spaces exceeded CO₂ limits during active use, while PM2.5 and PM10 exceeded thresholds in 90% of measured spaces. Notably, 70% of rooms exceeded formaldehyde limits and 80% exceeded TVOC limits, particularly in spaces with MDF materials. Original findings document passive off-gassing phenomena where formaldehyde peaked during non-occupancy periods, and establish correlations between architectural features and multi-pollutant accumulation. Recommendations include strategic exhaust fan placement, low-VOC materials, and cross-ventilation systems for tropical educational environments, supporting the urgent need for updated building regulations addressing multi-pollutant environments in health education facilities.
