Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine which instructional materials and learning activities informatics students can use to enhance their English language proficiency. Students were surveyed about their preferences and impressions of different learning activities and media using an analysis of needs questionnaire. Based on the survey results, games are considered to be the best exercise for expanding vocabulary—76.2% of students agreed with that assertion. 81.0% of students believe that YouTube videos are the best resource for improving listening skills. The two activities that are considered most useful for improving speaking skills are role-playing and simulation, both of which received a 57.1% recommendation. Chatting emerges as the most favored activity for enhancing writing skills, with 71.4% of students supporting its effectiveness. As far as improving writing skills go, talking is the most preferred activity (71.4% of students agree). Lastly, per 61.9% of students, reading articles from newspapers or magazines is the best exercise that improves reading abilities. By adjusting their teaching methods to better suit the needs of informatics students, lecturers will be likely to create an English language environment for learning that is both more successful and entertaining for students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic elements present in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used in senior high schools in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Specifically, it examines the coverage of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and contextual variables in two widely used textbooks: Buku Sarana Elektronik (BSE) and Pathway to English, for grades X, XI, and XII. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with document analysis techniques, drawing data from the textbooks and interviews with English teachers in Pekanbaru. The findings reveal that the coverage of speech acts in both textbooks is incomplete, with an overemphasis on directives such as commands, requests, and suggestions. These speech acts, often face-threatening, require higher pragmatic competence from learners, which the textbooks do not adequately support. Additionally, metapragmatic information provided in the textbooks is limited and focuses more on pragmalinguistics than sociopragmatic factors, leaving students underprepared for real-life communication where social norms and contextual variables such as power dynamics play a crucial role. The textbooks also lack diversity in contextual variables, with most dialogues featuring interactions between individuals of equal power and little social distance, reducing learners’ exposure to various social roles and communication contexts. The study concludes that both BSE and Pathway to English fail to provide sufficient pragmatic content and suggests that future textbook design should include a broader range of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and diverse social contexts to better develop learners' pragmatic competence. The findings have significant implications for improving the effectiveness of teaching materials in Indonesian EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This investigation of the religious value of nolam manuscripts handwritten in jawi script in the almost extinct oral tradition of the Kampar people aims to bring back the teaching instructions to the public. The analyzed nolam entitled Siti Saripah was found in the Harapan-Harapan Insyaf Abu Yazid Abdullah manuscript in Jumadil Akhir 1370H - 1955M. The main focus analyzed from this nolam manuscript is the five dimensions of religiosity according to Strack and Glock. They are Religious Belief Religious practice, Religious Feeling, Religious Knowledge, and Religious Effect. The approach used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach with three data collection techniques including script transfer from jawi writing into Indonesian, then reading while marking and recording good stanzas that contain dimensions of religiosity. The results showed that 58 out of 129 Siti Saripah's nolam stanzas contain religious values. The percentage of religiosity from the belief dimension is 50%, the worship dimension is 18.97%, the practice dimension (recommendation to do noble deeds) is 25.86%, and 5.17% for the dimension of prohibition to do despicable deeds. It can be concluded that the belief dimension is the dimension that occurs most often in life, because both have a lot to do with all daily activities, thus leaving a track record in the memory of the objectors.
