Abstract

The main problem facing by fishermen for capturing skipjack tuna is limited information of potential skipjack fishing areas such as the frontal locations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal skipjack tuna distributions and thermal fronts, and to determine the effect of climate change on their distribution and abundance during transitional seasons. We used a survey method, in which catch and fishing position data were collected by following pole and line fishing operations. This study also collected secondary data that consisted of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll-a derived from Aqua / MODIS. Fronts were determined by calculating SST gradient, SSTs preferences, chlorophyll-a, bathymetry and distance from coastline, whereas SST anomaly was calculated from the difference between monthly SST and mean SST. We mapped satellite and field data using ArcGIS 10.0. The results showed that the highest catch of skipjack tuna with an average of 205 fish/set were found inOctober 2013, which occurred in the areas of 4 o40S-5o10S and 120o40E-121oE. The locations had a temperature gradient of 0.4oC and chlorophyll-a density from 0,15 to 0,23 mg m-3. Potential fishing areas may associate with negative SST anomalies of -2.1373 - -0.6469oC, reflecting that skipjack tuna tend to be at thermal fronts with relatively lower SST compared with an average of seven years.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Fisheries are an important economic sector for many countries, including Indonesia. Bone Bay has high potential for skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) fishing. This study aims to map potential skipjack fishing zones in Bone Bay and analyze the relationship between sea surface temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration with the catch of these fish. Using quantitative methods and probability sampling techniques, primary data were obtained through direct observation of fishing activities using the pole and line method, while secondary data were obtained from satellite images downloaded from the Oceancolor website. The results showed that the potential zones for skipjack fishing are located at coordinates 3o0’0”LS-4o30’0”LS and 120o30’0”BT-121o0’0” BT. The findings are expected to help stakeholders make strategic decisions for more effective and susstainable fisheries management.

Abstract

Gillnets are widely used fishing gears whose environmental impact varies based on their design and application. This study focuses on assessing the environmental friendliness of two types of gillnets—drift gillnets and encircling gillnets—used by artisanal fishermen in Muara Kintap Village, Kintap Subdistrict, Tanah Laut Regency. The research employed a census (total sampling) approach involving 16 respondents from the KUB Putra Pantai fishermen group. Primary data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The environmental friendliness of the fishing gears was assessed using nine criteria derived from the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) by FAO (1995), which include gear selectivity, impact on habitat and biodiversity, catch quality, fisher and consumer safety, by-catch level, involvement of protected species, and social acceptance. Drift gillnets obtained a total score of 28.3, while encircling gillnets scored 26.8. Both are categorized as environmentally friendly fishing gears. The findings show that neither gear type causes habitat damage; both yield good-quality fish, are safe for users and consumers, and are socially accepted. However, both exhibit low selectivity, with Sardinella fimbriata dominating the catch (78.97% for drift gillnets and 88.24% for encircling gillnets). Both drift and encircling gillnets are considered environmentally friendly according to CCRF criteria. Nonetheless, the low selectivity level highlights the need for improvements in gear design and fishing practices to enhance sustainable fisheries management.
