Abstract

The research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "TheSound of Music" by Robert Wise. Based on the theories of character and moral values, there are four primary points to analyze: 1) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Russel, those are the Protagonist, the main protagonist played by Maria and the Von Trapp Family and the sisters in the monastery, the Antagonist, played by The Baroness and Herr Zeller, and Foil character played by Rolfe and Franz, 2) There are seven types of moral values that appear in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Borba, they are respect, kindness, conscience, self-control, justice, empathy and tolerance.Keywords: content analysis; moral values; movie

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze white supremacy and structural racism in the film "The Shawshank Redemption". The method used is descriptive-qualitative to describe white supremacy and structural racism in the film. Data is obtained, analyzed and explained based on dialogues contained in the film, namely: 1) white supremacy that is analyzed from a) the appearances of the character using a sequence table, and b) visible glorification and invisible glorification using glorification dialogue table, and 2) structural racism, using binary opposition, namely positive and negative characterization of the characters. By the sequence table, the character that is predominant in the film is Andy Dufresne. From the glorification dialogue table, visible glorification gets the highest presentation while invisible glorification gets the lowest presentation. This shows that white supremacy exists in American film. As for structural racism, the negative characterization of the supporting characters is the highest while the negative characterization of the main character is the lowest. This shows that structural racism exists in American film.Key Words: American film; drama; white supremacy; structural racism.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find out (1) The role of family and perception on school environment simultaneously towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. (2) The influence of family environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. (3) The influence of perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. The method that used in this research is survey with correlational technique. The population of the reaserh are all students of X level of SMK Negeri 5, 7 and 40 at East Jakarta totally 767 students. The samples are 89 students. The results of this research draw (1) there are significant simultaneously influences of family environment and perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score = 0,000 < 0,05 and Fcount = 31,406. The variables of family environment and perception on school environment simultaneously distribute 44,9 %  towards English learning achievement. (2) There is a significant influence of family environmet towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score sig = 0,001 < 0,05 and tcount = 3,312. (3) There is a significat influence of perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score = 0,000 < 0,05 and  tcount = 3,718. Key words : Family environment, Perception on school environment, English learning achievement

Abstract

This research aims to understand: 1) The effect of self-concept and learning motivation in English narrative listening skills, 2) self-concept towards English reading, 3) The effect of learning motivation towards English narrative listening skills. The method used in this research is a survey using correlational and regression analysis techniques. The population in this research was 1015 students. The sample in this research was 100 students. The study results conclude that: 1) There was a significant effect of self-concept and learning motivation towards English narrative listening skills. Sig can prove that 0,000 <0.05 and Fcount = 20.325. 2) There was a significant effect of self-concept towards English narrative listening skills. The Sig proves that 0.002 <0.05 and tcount = 3.246. 3) There was a significant effect of learning motivation towards English narrative listening skills. The Sig proves 0,000 <0.05 and tcount = 4,617.Keywords: self-concept, learning motivation, English narrative listening skill

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze how the plot of the story represents an identity crisis issue and the character’s action in dealing with his problems to manage his identity crisis. The reality and fantasy of the main character portrays the character’s identity crisis influencing his personality. The study employed qualitative method with the descriptive analysis. In identifying the data, Erikson’s theory about identity crisis and the interpretation of dreams by Sigmund Freud are used to find out the main character’s Id and how he manages his Id. The results of this study show the main character’s Id in The Jungle Book can be seen through the reflection of his anxiety through Freud theory. His anxiety and identity crisis have a significant role in Mowgli’s thoughts and behaviors: he cannot define himself in one’s identity. It comes to the conclusion that he is not a man, but neither a wolf.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of reading habit and grammar mastery towards the Students descriptive writing, then do research using the survey method. The sample used 90 students with cluster random sampling technique. The results showed that there is a significant influence reading habits and mastery of grammar together on the ability to write descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and Fh = 18.414. Together. 2) There is a significant effect on the ability of the habit of reading English writing descriptive texts. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig 0,002, <0.05 and th =3,235. 3). Also, there is a significant effect on the ability of mastering grammar writing descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition Sig.0,005 value <0.05 and th =2902Keywords: reading habits; grammar mastery; foreign language writing; descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the form of significant lexical collocation in student's English writing discussion text, (2) the process of lexical collocation creates cohesion in student's English writing discussion text, and (3) the cultural reflection displayed by the structure of lexical collocation and textual cohesion in student's English writing discussion text. This study applies a mixture of descriptive and quantitative qualitative methods in describing research findings. The data source of this research is the results of writing discussion texts in 3 PKBM Karawang. Data that has been documented in total is 30 discussion texts with 5274 words and 1664 types of words.  The author uses the help of a computer application called Antconc to obtain the collocation data. The findings show that (1) the lexical collocations produced by students in Paket C in the discussion text are L1 (15%), L2 (34%), L3 (18%), L4 (4%), L5 (18%), and L7 (11%); (2) reference data are personal (51%), demonstrative (30%), and comparative (10%); conjunction data are additive (44%), adversative (15%), temporal (5%), and causal (36%). (3) The cultural representation found was the issue raised as the title of the text sourced from daily activities and used the words claim and assumed to describe students' ideas and opinions in the text.  This shows that collocation is able to get a special place in learning English to improve the writing ability of students in Paket C in PKBM.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine: 1) The effect of preposition and grammar mastery on students writing descriptive text. 2) The Effect of the preposition on students writing descriptive text.  3) The Effect of vocabulary mastery on students writing descriptive text.  The Affordable population is class X of 1 Vocational School Rancaekek, Vocational School Majalayal. The sample of the research is 75 respondents in this study. The method of this current research used surveys. Inference analyses used are random and multiple linear regression. The results of the study show: 1) There is a significant effect of preposition and vocabulary mastery on student writing descriptive text; this is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. = 0,000 <0,05 and F observe = 9,266; 2) there is a significant effect of the preposition on student writing descriptive text. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. = 0,011<0,05 and T observe = -2,614.3. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students writing descriptive text; this is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0,003<0,05 and T observe = 3,058.Keywords: preposition, vocabulary mastery, descriptive text

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze: 1) Moral values in a children’s picture book "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters" by Barack Obama. 2) Ethics in a children’s picture book "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters" by Barack Obama. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative which aims to describe moral values and ethics in the children picture book Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters. The result of the analysis: 1) In moral values, self-confidence get the highest percentage of 45.65 %, bravery 19.56 %, strong belief 15.22 %, peace loving 10.87%, love and affection 8.69%. 2) While ethics, justice and beneficence get the highest percentage of 25 %, rights 22.5 %, utilitarianism 10%, and respect for autonomy 17.5%.Keywords: moral values, ethics, children, picture book.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know how the using of journal dialogue and genre-based approach in writing hortatory text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Beber and SMA Negeri 1 Jalaksana. This research was a content analysis study that consisted of three meetings. In doing the research, the writer involved 61 students of Class XI Social 3 and 4, one English teacher as the collaborator and the writer herself. In this research, there were two kinds of data. The first data were qualitative. To obtain the qualitative data, the writer conducted observation, interviews, and evaluating students’ writing tasks. The qualitative data were in the form of field notes, observation checklists result, interview transcripts, and students’ writing. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were presented in the score of the students’ writing task from students’ worksheet 2 in the third meeting. The result of this study shows two things. 1) The using of journal dialogue can improve students’ writing skills. Students’ writing problems can be reduced by applying journal dialogue. The feedback given by the writer facilitates the students to find and to correct their errors in the writing aspects, namely content, organisation, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. In reference to the students’ writing scores, the students’ ability in those five aspects of writing improved after the journal dialogue strategy was given. It can be seen that the students’ mean value gain from the students’ worksheet 2 for class XI social 3 and 4 in the content aspect is 3.52; the organisation aspect is 3.87; then the vocabulary aspect is 3.57; then the grammar aspect is 2.9; and the mechanics aspect is 2.9. 2) The using of genre-based approach can be an efective method in improving student’s writing skill explicitly through the stages of BkoF, MoT, JcoT, and IcoT, and it created students have opportunities and time in writing, grow motivation to write English. So, it prepared students with targeted learning where they develop meaningful and communicative language skills through text, especially when the students write a hortatory text..Keyword: Journal Dialogue, Genre-Based Approach, Writing, Hortatory Exposition
