Abstract

The results of this study are expected to be utilized by both formal and non-formal education and civil society organizations to strengthen civic education or citizenship education, which can build critical awareness among the silent majority of society. By strengthening emerging social movements and changes, it is hoped that people can become more critical in their political participation. Further implications include the public being increasingly empowered in negotiating public interests, controlling power, and making the country or government more civilized. An important point to underline is that this study attempts to synthesize or discuss both liberal and non-liberal approaches, which will provide neither empathetic nor critical knowledge in viewing the relational dynamics between civil society, social movements, and change. The study positions civil society as a crucial actor in building constructive opportunities for social change. Furthermore, the study does not take a positivistic view of civil society's role in democracy development, as empirically, it does not positively affect democracy or align with non-liberal views. At the same time, the study avoids the negative non-liberal perspective of civil society and changes involving the destruction of mining symbols, such as investor posts, pro-investor elite residents, and mining tools, which are forms of traditional movements opposing mining. This movement was selected as a negotiating tool for powerless people to claim a successful struggle agenda. Unlike the elite or educated middle classes who typically choose diplomacy and negotiation, the powerless community tends to opt for mass radical movements. The social movements opposing mining succeeded in forcing investors to halt the project and the district government to review the mining exploration policy in accordance with citizens' criticisms, which were deemed not pro-people.

Abstract

This article discusses the local traditions of Kenduri, Selametan, Tahlilan, and Maulid Nabi from the perspective of Islam Nusantara, focusing on their meanings, the Islamic values they embody, and the controversies surrounding these practices in Indonesia. This phenomenon illustrates the process of acculturation between Islamic teachings and established local cultural wisdom, but faces ideological polemics between traditionalist and reformist groups. The main issues addressed in this article are how these traditions are understood by the community, what Islamic values they contain, and how the controversies surrounding their legal status can be analysed in greater depth. The research method used is a literature study, reviewing various relevant literature to comprehensively analyse the four traditions. The results show that Kenduri, Selametan, Tahlilan, and Maulid Nabi contain Islamic values such as gratitude, togetherness, ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood), and the strengthening of social morals. However, these traditions face controversy, particularly regarding whether they are sunnah or bid'ah, which creates tension between puritan and traditionalist groups. Further discussion reveals that Islam Nusantara offers a moderate model of religiosity, balancing text and cultural context, and supporting inclusiveness and social harmony.

Abstract

The advent of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and 5.0 has precipitated substantial changes across myriad fields, including higher education. These developments have been particularly pronounced in America, Europe, the United Kingdom, China, and Asia. Islamic universities, in particular, confront distinctive challenges in adapting to technological advancements such as Big Data and Omics (in the health sector) following the emergence of the novel Coronavirus, while concurrently upholding Islamic principles within the educational curriculum. This article aims to examine adaptation strategies that can be implemented by Indonesian Islamic universities in facing this digital transformation era. Using a literature review approach and conceptual analysis, this article explores the integration of Big Data technology to support data-based decision-making, the development of Omics-based research in biotechnology and health, and curriculum development efforts that combine technology and Islamic values. The results of this study demonstrate that the successful adaptation of Islamic higher education in Indonesia is contingent upon the enhancement of collaboration between academia, industry, and the community, the improvement of digital literacy among faculty and students, and the promotion of policies that demonstrate responsiveness to technological developments. In conclusion, Islamic higher education should aspire to a proactive role in the integration of modern technology with Islamic values, with the objective of creating a more relevant and internationally competitive educational ecosystem.
