Abstract

Abstract The problem in this research was “How was the ability of students in writing descriptive text?” and “What were the difficulties faced by students in writing descriptive text?” The objective of this research was to describe the ability of students in writing descriptive text and to describe the difficulties faced by students in writing descriptive text. This research used quantitative method to and data collected in write descriptive text. The population in this research was all the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Lubuklinggau. The sample of this research was VIII.2 considered 27 students who taken class by using random sampling. Based on the result of the writing descriptive text at the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Lubuklinggau was in (failed category). The mean score of students was 61. There were 5 students(18%) on Very Good category, 5 students on (18%) Good category, 1 student (4%) on Nearly Good category, 8 students on (30%) Sufficient category, and the last 8 students on (30%) Nearly Sufficient category. It means that the ability of students in writing descriptive text was categorized into Nearly Good, and their ability was categorized into failed (the students’ score were lower than KKM 61< 68). In conclusion, the biggest difficulties faced by students were about grammar, and organizing the ideas. Keywords: Descriptive Text, Difficulties in writing, Students’ Ability

Abstract

This research aims to prove whether top-down and bottom-up strategies can facilitate students' listening skills at level eleven of MA Mazro'illah Lubuklinggau. This research used pre-experimental methods. The population of this research was class XI MIPA students with a sample of 18 students. The sample used in this research was purpose sampling. In this study, researcher used written tests which were given twice, namely pre-test and post-test. In this study, researcher analyzed data using individual scores, normality tests and paired t-tests. The results of this study were that there were 4 students who passed and 14 students who failed the pre-test, while in the post-test the number of students who passed increased, namely 16 students and 2 students who failed the post-test. The students' average score on the pre-test was 48.05 and the average score on the post-test was 84.86. The results of the paired t-test is 8.53 and ttable is 1.740 it means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In conclusion it is significantly effective to use Top-down and Bottom-up strategy to facilitate students’ listening skill at the eleventh graders of MA Mazro’illah Lubuklinggau.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analysis of compliment used by teacher in the classroom at SMA Negeri 5 Lubuklinggau. The method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative. The subject in this research was an English teacher at SMA 5 Lubuklinggau. The data was analyzed by describing the types of compliments used observation sheet, interview and documentation (field note and voice record). In analyzing the data, the research identified two types of compliments verbal and nonverbal compliments used by the teacher by using Usman (2017) theory. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found five kinds of verbal compliments, namely good (31 data), very good (19 data), well done (2 data), good job (20 data), excellent (3 data). And also the researcher found five kinds of nonverbal compliments namely applause and thumbs (5 data), gesture head movement (43 data), contact touching (5 data), gesture face expression (28 data), standing near to students (5 data). In conclusion, by giving a compliment the students’ mood to participate in the learning process can increase so that it will create a good atmosphere for both teachers and students.

Abstract

SMAN Karya Sakti is one of the educational units at high school level in Karya Sakti, Kec. Muara Kelingi, Kab. Musi Rawas, South Sumatra. In carrying out its activities, SMAN Karya Sakti is under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Culture with B accreditation. SMAN Karya Sakti is located at Jalan Tapak Libok Blok A, Karya Sakti, Kec. Muara Kelingi, Kab. Musi Rawas, South Sumatra. The aim of this Community Service activity is to provide English language training on reading comprehension which is useful for students in answering ANBK exam questions. The method used in this service is through socialization, incidental training for 1 day. In the process of implementing this activity, the team will provide material as well as tips and tricks on how to easily answer reading skills questions so that it is hoped that students will have adequate abilities in answering questions about reading comprehension both on the ANBK exam and other tests. The expected output target is that students can predict the answers to National Examination questions and answer them correctly and briefly. They also have skills in Reading Skills to analyze the answers to the questions presented

Abstract

This research aimed to prove significantly effective or not to use short story in teaching speaking skill. This research used a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The population was all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Beliti with consist that 131 students. The sampling technique used cluster random sampling with method of lottery and the sample selected was XI IPA 2 class with consist 27 students. The data for this research were collected by used oral test. Technique for collecting the data was the researcher classifying individual score students and data collection. The researcher found that using Short Story to teach speaking skill to the eleventh grade students at senior high scholl 1 muara beliti was effective. It could be proved by the significant difference between the mean score in the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the students in the pre-test was 4.60 and in the post-test was 7.30. the t-obtained was 17.66, it was higher than 2.056 as the critical value in t-table. Therefore, it was clearly stated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types and the dominant type of slip of the tongue made by Jokowi at Ecosperity Week 2023. The method applied was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research is Jokowi’s speech. The data were taken from video of Jokowi’s speech at Ecosperity Week 2023, obtained from YouTube. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed based on the types of slip of the tongue proposed by Altiparmark and Koruoglu (2014). The result of the research were 15 slips of the tongue found in the utterances by Jokowi: 7 deletions, 5 additions, 1 subtitutions, I anticipations, and 1 misdevations. Therefore, Jokowi produce 5 types slip of the tongue and deletions was the dominant types occured.
