Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ understanding of language features in narrative texts, including characters, past tense, adverbs of time, direct speech, and moral values. It also explores the factors that contribute to students’ difficulties in comprehending these features. This study was conducted at SMK Islam Bustanul Ulum Pakusari Jember with 29 male students, using a convergent mixed-methods design, quantitative worksheet analysis, and qualitative questionnaire insights. Quantitative data were used to identify students’ understanding of language features and moral values in narrative texts based on worksheet results. Qualitative data to explain the factors contributing to students’ difficulties, including reading strategies and learning obstacles. Data sets complement by showing well-understood or challenging aspects and reasons behind results. Results showed students had a strong understanding of past tense, direct speech, and specific characters, with all (100%) identifying them correctly. However, some aspects needed improvement, especially adverbs of time (correctly identified by 65.52% of students), spelling consistency, and English moral value (34.48%). The questionnaire results highlighted variations in reading strategies, such as scanning and skimming techniques, as well as obstacles, including limited vocabulary and lack of focus, which were addressed through dictionary to improve comprehension of narrative meaning. This study shows that culturally relevant worksheets effectively improved comprehension and supported students’ understanding by linking linguistic learning with local heritage. These findings suggest focusing future instruction on gradual support for inferential comprehension and spelling accuracy, with further research exploring longer interventions, mixed-gender participants, and strategies to strengthen moral value interpretation in narrative texts.

Abstract

This study examines the natural phenomena on the development of lemma and meaning in the variety of languages used by adolescents on social media. Research design was done naturally through the process of observation, taking notes, and writing down the case. The qualitative research appears in the development of the entry which is easily found as a definite phenomenon of linguistic development. The data collection method was carried out by tracing data on the use of various languages on social media. To analyze the data, the researcher uses padan and agih methods. This method is to test the accuracy of classification on the types of language used by adolescents in social media in the development of the entry and or the development of the meaning of the entry. The results showed that the variety of languages on social media is very dynamic, developing, arbitrary, but conventional. The variety of languages indicates the development of new lemmas, acronyms, and walikan. The development of meaning is marked along with the development of the entry in the form of synonyms and the use of the Indonesian language entry in the form of a polysemic. Based on the results of this study, adolescents can be considered a productive period in exploring the language, through direct interaction or social media. Becoming actively productive in language exploration led to a potential for concepting a new lemma and a new meaning according to the context of language use. In addition, this development becomes one proof of the self-existence of adolescence, community characteristics, and also the need for the development of Indonesian vocabulary.

Abstract

Twenty-one (21) Banyuwangi MSMEs, 14 lecturers, and 3 students attended the community service activities. MSMEs participating in this community service have various products, such as food, drinks, furniture, and handicrafts. After implementation, participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire to get an overview of their understanding after being given the training. The evaluation was carried out using a Likert scale.
