Abstract

Curriculum development comprises a process to meet learners’ needs leading to learners’ learning improvement. For that reason, curriculum developers should gather as much information as possible toward the learners’ needs. This study aims to reveal the learners’ needs on local cultural based-textbook in learning Reading Professional Context at the English department of Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study employed qualitative with survey design. One-hundred-and-fifty-five learners of English program study of UKI Toraja participated in this study. The instruments used in this study are questionnaire and semi structured-interview. The technique of analyzing data applied in this research is descriptive analysis in the form of calculation and percentage, and in analyzing the qualitative data (interview), we used cyclical data analysis. This study showed that the students’ need a learning objective to understand beliefs, norms, values, and social practices in Toraja for maintaining Torajan Culture and avoiding misunderstanding across the culture. This study also indicates that the students’ need themes about the cultural pattern in Toraja for learning materials include beliefs, values, norms, and social practices in Toraja. Besides, this study revealed that students’ need learning strategies and evaluation. Learning strategies are rooted in activities/exercises on the material content and the number of students. On-time evaluation is necessary during the process and at the end of the lesson.

Abstract

This research aims are to find out the types and the functions of speech acts those are used by the lectures in teaching English and to describe the students’ perception toward the use of speech acts by the lecturers in lecturing process. This research employed qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the lecturers and the students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The result of the research revealed that (1) the types of speech acts used by the lecturers in teaching English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja are assertives (assertive, affirmative and informative), directives (asking question, suggest, command and request), commisives (offer and promise), declaratives (declare) and expressives (feeling expression, greeting, parting, thanking, and praising) and those are expressed directly and indirectly, (2) the functions of the speech acts used by the lecturers in teaching English at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja are statement, asking question, command and request, (3) the students prefer the lecturers expressed their utterances directly because it is easy for them to grasp the meaning of the utterances and respond the lecturers’ utterances. The students also prefer the lecturers mixtheir language and using body language or gesture to convey the materials in the lecturing process. The students were responded the lecturers’ utterance in verbal, nonverbal and both of them. According to the students, the lecturers’ utterances can help the students to improve their language competence, as a motivation for the students, can increase their vocabulary to implement in their communication, help them to imitate and practice the way in pronouncethe words correctly.

Abstract

This research aims are to find out the impact of brainstorming strategies towards writing skillfor the third semester students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja. Thisresearch employed quantitative research to find out the impact of brainstorming strategiestoward writing skill for the third semester students at English Education Study Program ofFKIP UKI Toraja Academic Year 2015/2016. The sources of the data taken from the thirdsemester students at English Education Study Program of FKIP UKI Toraja Academic Year2015/2016. The students who are selected as the subject of this research consist of 15students of class D. The instruments of the research in collecting data was written test. Theobtained data was analyzed based on generic structure of descriptive text criteria(identification, description and conclusion), then classified the students score (pre-test andpost-test) and the last used T-Test to test the hypothesis. The result of pre-test shows that 4students (26,67%) got good score, 4 students (26,67%) got fair score, 6 students (40%) gotpoor score and 1 student got very poor score. The result of post-test shows that 3 students(20%) got very good score, 10 students (66,67%) got good score, 2 students (13,33 %) gotfair score. Based on T-Test shows that to highest than t- table (5,631 > 1,785) so H0 isrefusing and H1 is accepting. It means that the brainstorming strategies have impact towardwriting skills for the third semester students of English Education Study Program of FKIPUKI Toraja Academic Year 2015/2016.

Abstract

This research aims are to find out the students’ need priority of English language skillsfor automotive department of the eleventh grade students at SMKN 1 Sesean. Thisresearch employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were theeleventh grade students of automotive department of SMKN 1 Sesean academic year2015/2016. The instrument used namely questionnaire. The result of the research revealedthat the students’ need priority of English language skill for automotive department of theeleventh grade students at SMKN 1 Sesean is speaking.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the students’ perception on the language used by the lecturers in teaching at the eight semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. In this research, the writer used qualitative method. The participant is the eight semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja academic year 2017/2018. This research employed a snowball sampling where the writer took only 12 students as respondents. Interview was used by the writer in collecting the data. The result showed that the eight semester students of English Department FKIP UKI Toraja is students was really like when lecturers used two language in teaching that is mixing language Indonesian and English

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cultural values in the ritual of Bulangan Londong Sembangan Suke Barata as part of the Toraja indigenous people life. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method. Meanwhile, the respondents involved in this study include culturist, linguists, and the Toraja community. The research instruments used in this study were document files, interviews with the subjects, and observations using a video recorder that recorded the ritual process of Bulangan Londong Sembangan Suke Barata. The data analysis technique in this study includes three main steps, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the cultural values contained in the rituals of the Bulang Londong Sembangan Suke Barata were 'Manuk' which symbolized the value of the work ethic, 'Ussembang Suke Barata' which represented the religious value of bamboo slashed by 'Mina', and 'Kayunan Londong' which personifies the leader's patriotic value.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki nilai-nilai budaya dari ritual bulangan londong sembangan suke barata dari masyarakat adat Toraja. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Responden penelitian ini adalah budayawan, ahli bahasa, dan komunitas Toraja. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah file dokumen, wawancara dengan subjek, dan pengamatan dengan menggunakan perekam video pada ritual bulangan londong sembangan suke barata. Teknik analisis data mencakup tiga langkah utama, pengurangan data, presentasi data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai-nilai budaya yang terkandung dalam ritual bulangan londong sembangan suke barata adalah manuk yang melambangkan nilai etos kerja, ussembang suke barata yang mewakili nilai religius bambu yang ditebas oleh mina, dan kayunan londong sebagai personifikasi nilai patriotik pemimpin.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan Kebutuhan belajar bahasa inggris umum, dan mendesain kerangka Silabus Berbasis Tugas pada Mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris Umum Berdasarkan Analisis Kebutuhan dan Analisis Situasi Mahasiswa Tehnik Sipil UKI Toraja. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode pengembangan (Research and development/R&D). Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Tehnik Sipil UKI Toraja sebanyak 60 mahasiswa. Dalam mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan instrumen Angket, dan Wawancara. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah menggunakan tehnik Miles dan Huberman (2002: 16). Teknik analisis data ini meliputi tiga langkah pokok yaitu: 1) reduksi data, 2) penyajian data, 3) penarikan kesimpulan, dan verifikasi. Ketiga langkah ini dilakukan secara terus menerus sejak awal. Untuk menganalisis data angket dari informasi yang sudah dikumpulkan dari responden selanjutnya dianalisis. Teknik analisis yang kami terapkan pada penelitian ini adalah dengan menggunakan persentase dan frekuensi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Kebutuhan belajar Mahasiswa Tehnik Sipil UKI Toraja yakni: Kegiatan Pembelajaran yang dibutuhkan meliputi Kegiatan Pembelajaran dalam bentuk tatap muka, penugasan terstruktur, kegiatan mandiri tak terstruktur. Kebutuhan mahasiswa tentang metode pengajaran yakni belajar secara berkelompok, belajar secara berpasangan, dan belajar sendiri. Topik pelajaran yang disukai dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris Umum, mahasiswa menyukai materi tentang IPTEKS, materi Bahasa Inggris Umum yang kontekstual, dan materi kegiatan sehari-hari. Desain kerangka Silabus Berbasis Tugas pada Mata kuliah Bahasa Umum Inggris didasarkan pada Analisis Kebutuhan dan Analisis Situasi Mahasiswa Tehnik Sipil UKI Toraja yang merefleksikan Kegiatan Pembelajaran dalam bentuk tatap muka, penugasan terstruktur, kegiatan mandiri tak terstruktur.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how the values of the Toraja philosophy are implemented in the lantang pangngan ritual and how the stages of the lantang pangngan ritual represent the identity of the Toraja traditional community. The researcher applied a qualitative method through an ethnographic design in this study. In choosing the research subjects, researchers applied purposive sampling techniques; the subjects were Toraja cultural experts. Data are collected and analyzed in observations and interviews. The data analysis technique in this study is a cyclical pattern. The results showed that the values of the Toraja philosophy that were implemented in the lantang pangngan ritual were to masayang: Tang dimaseanpa penawa and Kinallo: vehicles to puya. Then, the representation of the identity of the Toraja traditional community in the stages of the lantang pangngan ritual, namely social status as the basis of ma'lantang pangngan, Pa'pakatu: representation of social values and love, and Tengko situru': the cultural identity of togetherness in joys and sorrows.

Abstract

This study aims to know the socio-cultural aspects of the discourse kada to minaa Toraja in the formation of the character of learners. This research method is qualitative with an ethnographic design. The data analysis technique in this study is Ethnographic Research Cycle. The results of this study showed that the socio-cultural aspects of kada to minaa Toraja discourse in the formation of the character of learners are: First, the aspect of politeness value in kada to minaa, namely Mekatabe' londong lako to disa'bu' gayang ma'pampang ma'paran-paran. Second, the religious aspect of kada to minaa "Di posulo sulo lalan di pobia' kalambanan." Third, aspects of social practice or habits/rituals contained in kada to minaa, namely "Laku olapa umbating lakulomban pamario." Fourth, aspects of family values in the expression "Totiumba' Batu Rupanna tama Tandung Kalonaran." Fifth, aspects of the value of humility in kada to minaa "Tang lara'ba pa te riu laku lessa', tangmaupu' pa' te umpalumba' sangpatikan anna bisara." Sixth, the religious aspect of kada to minaa speech is "Antan Tundan tongan mora Puang dimatua dao masua anggana to palulungan dao pataralayukna."

Abstract

In the increasingly rapid development of the times, the development of hard skills and soft skills competencies plays an important role for every student in preparing themselves for the changing times. The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategies used by the PBI MBKM Team to improve the soft skills of students participating in the MBKM program in English Study Program, FKIP, UKI Toraja. This study applies qualitative methods. The subjects of this study are people who are able to become informants to provide information in accordance with the objectives of this study. The informants in this study were the MBKM Team and students who were participating in MBKM program in the English Language Education Study Program UKI Toraja. In accordance with the purpose of this study, the data were collected through observation and interviews. The data analyzed through transcription and coding analysis, while the interview results will be analyzed using thematic analysis. The result of this study confirms that the strategies used by the MBKM Team to improve the soft skills of students participating in the MBKM program are apply active learning, assign group tasks, hold seminars or workshops, provide mentorship, increased digital literacy, and provide constructive feedback.
