Abstract

The objective of this research are 1) to find out the factors motivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English club, and 2) to find out factors demotivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English Club.This research used qualitative method. The participant of this research was the students of SMPN 1 Makale. The researchers used snowball sampling technique. The researchers took 54 students to interview as participants. The data of this research was collected by interview. The researchers used open ended interview. The obtained data were analyzed in three major phase namely reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research shows revealed 1) some factors that motivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English club, they are collaboration, communication, creativity, and innovation, and 2) some factors demotivate the students are teacher attitude, lack of facilities, teaching concepts, students did not like learning English. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the students of SMPN 1 Makale have some factors that motivate and demotivate them in joining English Club.

Abstract

This research attempted to reveal the types of turn taking, its function, and thestudents’ responses toward the use of turn taking signals in teaching English at EnglishStudy Program of FKIP UKI Toraja, Indonesia. This research employed descriptivequalitative method. This research used purposive probability sampling. Therespondents consisted of 3 lecturers and 15 students of English education StudyProgram. The data was collected by using observation, recording, and interviewing.The findings showed that 1) there were three types of turn taking signals which wasused by the lecturers in the interaction during teaching i.e. turn yielding signals, turntakingsignals, and turn claiming signals, 2) the signals were used for several functionsincluded to check the students’ understanding, to welcome the students, to thank thestudent and as a leave-taking, to correct the students’ answer, to get the students focuson the topic, to warn the students, and to stop the students for a further explanation,and 3) the students responded the given signals in both verbal and non-verbal signals.So, it was concluded that the classroom interaction in this research was still dominatedby the lecturer.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the picture word inductive model is effective in teaching vocabulary to the eight grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN. The researcher applied quantitative experimental used pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN academic 2018/2019. The researcher used cluster sampling in choosing class VIII A consists 19 students. The data collected through written test, and then it is analyzed in percentage in work sheet. The result of data analysis through written test showed that the mean score of pre-test was 53,73 falls into poor score, and the mean score of post-test was 75,15. It means that the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. The result of t-test and t-table showed that there was significant improvement of Students vocabulary after treated by picture word inductive model. It was found that the score of t-test was 12,98 and score of t-table that used in this research was 1,734 It means that the hypothesis Hi is accepted because t-test is higher than t-table (12,98?1,734) Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that used of picture word inductive model to the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN is effective.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ perception toward code switching performed by lecturers in teaching speaking at English Education Study Program at UKI Toraja. Researchers used descriptive quantitative methods. The population of this research are the 6th semester students who have finished taking Speaking courses. Random sampling technique is used in sample selection with questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The results of the study were processed using quantitave by calculating the percentage of 10 items presented in the questionnaire. The result shows that students have positive perception toward code switching performed in teaching Speaking.

Abstract

Language will be acquired and mastered due to habitual factors. In the case of second language learning in higher education, it is expected that the use of English as language instruction is needed to improve students ability in Speaking. In fact, in the learning process, code-switching is still carried out by lecturers, and result of some studies shows that students respond positively to the it. The purpose of this study is to find out the function of code-switching carried out by lecturers in Speaking classes at UKI Toraja. Researchers used quantitative descriptive methods. This research population are lecturers who perform code-switching in Speaking courses in the classroom at UKI Toraja. Total sampling is used in sample selection with interviews as a tool for collecting data. The results of the study processed using quantitative descriptive methods. The result shows that lectures switch code in teaching Speaking for several functions. They are: a. to introduce new topic b. to create good learning atmosphere. c to build effective, flexible and non-rigid communication d. as a strategy to facilitate and check student understanding e. to minimize the students’ levels of anxiety in conveying their ideas.

Abstract

The objectives of this writing are (1) to find out the difficulties faced by the fifth semester students English department of FKIP-UKI Toraja to spell English (vowel and consonant) sound, and (2) to find out what factors cause the fifth semester students English department of FKIP UKI- Toraja have difficulties to spell English (consonants and vowels) sound. This research is quantitative The population in this research was the fifth semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. It consist of 234 students and scattered in eight classes.The research employed cluster and random sampling, where the number of the sample taken by the 1 of the eight classes (cluster sampling), but because the sample was quite big in number. So, the researcher taken the sample by using random sampling, where from the one class still random. It means that not all the students that are taken by cluster sampling as respondents. The number of the sample taken in this research as sample was 15 respondents. Based on the data and discussion it can be argued that the difficulties of the students of English Department of FKIP-UKI Toraja in spell the English (vowel and consonant) sound.The problems faced by the students arise from several factors that cause them to spell English (consonant and vowel) sound: 53.33% students difficult to differentiating the English sound, (special for the same sound [?, ð,], 40% students lazy to learn the English phonetic, 33.33 % The students less self confidence to pronounce the English phonetic, less comprehend the material, and less book in the library 26.66% The lecturer’s method not available with the material.

Abstract

This paper presents a need analysis on the use of media in teaching English to young learners especially in doing community service on teaching English to children on early ages in Toraja. The aim of the study was to assess the specific media preferences and advantages associated with incorporating media in language instruction for young learners. Through a systematic investigation, the study aimed to inform educators and curriculum developers about the appropriate media used in the English language classroom and the advantages in implementing the medias. Based on result of data analysis, it can be concluded that picture storybook, animation video, interactive games, song, and things around are very important to be used when teaching English to young learners. Regarding to the advantages, it found out that media can be beneficial to be implemented in teaching English for several reason. They are: enhancing learners' motivation, facilitating different learning style, fun and enjoyable learning experience, fostering learners' understanding, and also fostering effective and interactive learning.

Abstract

Toraja is one of the tribes in Indonesia that gets a legacy of carving motifs as a means of teaching for posterity of their ancestors. This research aimed to find the types of carving motifs used in the decoration of traditional wedding events in Toraja. This research used qualitative research methods of ethnographic type and purpossive sampling techniques. The results of this study found at least fifteen types of carving motifs that have been used in decorations for traditional wedding events, Rampanan Kapa’, by Torajan. The carving motifs are Pa'tukku pare, Pa' lolo tabang, Pa' bungkang danau, Pa' tangke lumu', Pa' erong, Pa' Bombo wai, pa' bare' allo, Pa' batang lau, Pa' kapu' baka, Passungkalla', Passekong kandaure, Pa' tedong, Pa' bulu londong, Passora, and Pa' poya mundan. The fifteen carving motifs contain prayers and hopes from all those who attended the Kapa' Rampanan event for both brides.
