Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the students’ perception in using Task-Based Instruction in Teaching English at Mechanical Engineering Students of UKI Toraja. In analyzing the data of this research, the researcher employed quantitative method. The subjects of this research were the fifth semester students of Mechanical Engineering students of UKI Toraja. To get the respondents, the researcher used incidental sampling. The researcher took 27Students of Mechanical Engineering of UKI Toraja as respondents. The data of this research was collected by questionnaire. It was closed-ended questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by using Likert Scale. The questionnaire consists of 10 positive statement and 10 negative statement. The result of the research of Students’ Perception in Using Task-Based Instruction (TBI) in Teaching English at Mechanical Engineering Students of UKI Toraja were positive perception. It could be concluded by mean score of students’ perception. The mean score of students’ perception were 65.19. It was categorised into positive perception because 65.19 ≥ 60.

Abstract

The objective of this research are 1) to find out the factors motivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English club, and 2) to find out factors demotivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English Club.This research used qualitative method. The participant of this research was the students of SMPN 1 Makale. The researchers used snowball sampling technique. The researchers took 54 students to interview as participants. The data of this research was collected by interview. The researchers used open ended interview. The obtained data were analyzed in three major phase namely reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research shows revealed 1) some factors that motivate the students of SMPN 1 Makale in joining English club, they are collaboration, communication, creativity, and innovation, and 2) some factors demotivate the students are teacher attitude, lack of facilities, teaching concepts, students did not like learning English. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the students of SMPN 1 Makale have some factors that motivate and demotivate them in joining English Club.

Abstract

Tourists’ Perception toward the Service Quality of Tourist Information Center in Toraja. Thesis. English Department. Teachers Training and Education Faculty. Christian University of Indonesia Toraja. The aim of this research is to know the level of tourists perception toward the servicequality of tourist information center (TIC) in Toraja.This research was conducted in Toraja. The data sources were primary source and secondary source. The writer used snowball technique to choose the sample. The data was analysed by using quantitative method. Library research and field reasearch were used to collect the data. In the field research, data was collected by using questionnaries distributed to the tourists who were trying the product in Tourist Information Center in Toraja. Based on the data analysed, shown that out of 20 variables, there are 9 variables that makes tourist felt very satisfied. There are 7 variable exist on the level satisfied and there are 4 variables in the level satisfied enough.The result of this research is the level of tourists ‘ perception toward the service quality of tourist information center in Toraja is generally satisfied.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out kinds of teacher-students’ interaction patternsoccur in teaching and learning process of English class for the Tenth Grade Students ofSMAN 1 Mengkendek. This research used a qualitative descriptive analysis methodresearch. The researcher took sample in this research by using snowball sampling. It usedto find out kinds of teacher-students’ interaction patterns in English class for the TenthGrade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Mengkendek. The result of data analysis indicated ofthe Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Mengkendek in teacher-students’ interactionpatterns in English class. The kinds of teacher-students interaction patterns used ofpattern teacher-student (A), pattern teacher-student-teacher (B), pattern of teacherstudent-students-teacher (C), and pattern teacher-student-student-teacher, and teacherstudent-student-teacher, and student-student (D).

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the perception about written test inlearning English by the fifth semester students’ of English Department of FKIPUKI Toraja. The research method applied in this research is qualitative descriptivemethod. The subject of this research was the fifth semester students’ in EnglishDepartment at UKI Toraja. To collect data, the writer used interview as aninstrument. Next, data analysis was done through some steps. Those aretranscription, extracting, interpretation, and categorizing. The result of thisresearch showed that there are many perceptions in learning English by the fifthsemester students’ in English Department at UKI Toraja which can be seen in twokinds, they are positive and negative perception. Ten respondents that had beeninterviewed showed that they have different perception. It was found there are 7students’ have positive perceptions and 3 negative perception toward the use ofwritten test in learning English. Based on the research, it can be concluded that thefifth semester students in English Department at UKI Toraja have more positiveperception toward the use of written test in learning English

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the perceptions of society toward English course at Kole Barebatu. In this research, the writer used quantitative descriptive method. The population of this research is the the society at Kole Barebatu, there were 844 people consists of 425 male and 419 female. The writer used stratified sampling because the number of object is relatively large. The writer took 31 societies as respondent. The writer choose the representatives of student, office staff, teacher, housewife, bussinesman, farmer, unemployment, and government as respondent. In collecting data, the writer used questionnaire to find out the perceptions of the society toward English Course at Kole Barebatu. The result shows that there are positive perceptions and negative perception from the society of English course at Lembang Kole Barebatu. The positive perception more dominant than negative perception. The positive perceptions such as, the society said agree with English course is important to learn, one of the way to get English knowledge is by a English Course, and can help the society to get a job in the future. The negative perception is the society is disagree if one of the tutors is a student. It means English course that the local government conducted at Kole Barebatu is very exemplary program and it can help the society to get a English knowledge.

Abstract

This study was aimed at exploring the students’ need on methods used by lecturers in teaching English for management studies. The type of research used to achieve the above objective is descriptive quantitative. The data was collected through questionnaires that was given to students, lecturers, and graduates through google form, and it was analyzed by using Likert Scale. The total respondents was 72. They consist of 4 lecturers, 17 graduates, and 51 students. Result of the research indicates that the eight methods are important to be applied in teaching ESP. This means that lecturer can combine these methods as they are needed by the students at Management Study Program at UKI Toraja.

Abstract

To achieve the goal of learning English, the students must know how to write English well. Some of methods that the teacher had used in teaching it. One of the methods can be used in teaching writing descriptive text, namely Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM).This is the reason of the writers of the research to conduct a research to know the effectiveness of PWIM in teaching writing descriptive text by the eleventh class students of SMA Kristen Makale. The type of research used to achieve the above objective is descriptive quantitative. The data was collected through written test that was given to the students. The total respondents were 20. Result of the research indicates that the mean score of the students in pretest was 51, 68 and falls into bad score classification while the mean score of the post test was 76,5 and falls into good score classification. So, the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text was better after using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). Comparing with the t-test value at the level significance on α 5% (0,05 ) it was higher than t-table with degree freedom (df) = n-1, if found that t-test ( 7,75) value is higher than t-table 17.2913. It can be concluded that Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) is effective used in writing descriptive text at the eleventh class students of SMA Kristen Makale.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out, the correlation between mastery of vocabulary and the ability in listening of English department students of FKIP UKI Toraja academic year 2012/2013. In this research the writer applied descriptive method. The population of this research is the sixth semester students of English department of FKIP UKI Toraja academic year 2012/2013. The total of the population is 75 students. Because the population is relative large in number, the writer applied random sampling to take out 20 students as sample. The instruments are used to collect data are the written tests is used to find out the student’s mastery of vocabulary and the listening test is used to find out the ability in listening. The result of data analysis showed that there is a correlation between mastery of vocabulary and the ability in listening of the sixth semester students of English department students of FKIP UKI Toraja. This proved by the result of coefficient of correlation is 0.809. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between mastery of vocabulary with the ability in listening of the sixth semester students of English department of FKIP UKI Toraja. It is shown by the point of coefficient of correlation is 0.809.

Abstract

The Ice Breaking Method Effectiveness on students’ Enthusiasm in Learning English at SMPN 1 Saluputti. Students at junior high school are majorly teenagers that biologically transform from children to adolescence. This phase effects the students tend to have lack of confidence. This research to verify whether the ice breaking methods is effective on students’ enthusiasm in learning English at SMPN 1 Saluputti. The objective of this research is to find the effectiveness of the ice breaking method to improve the students’ enthusiasm in learning English at SMPN 1 Saluputti. This research is a kind of descriptive quantitative method. The subject of this research was the ninth grade students at SMPN 1 SALUPUTTI. The data of this research was collected by questionnaire. Then the data was analyzed by Likert Scale. The result of the findings about the effectiveness of the ice breaking method to improve the students’ enthusiasm in learning English at SMPN 1 Saluputti.is effective. It can be seen on the the students statement in the first questionnaire result obtained 74.5% that falling into strongly agree category and the students statement in the second questionnaire result obtained 88.3% with strongly agree category. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concludes that most of students have an increased enthusiasm in learning English when the teacher use the ice breaking method in the learning proses. So, the used of ice breaking method on students enthusiasm in lerning English at SMPN 1 Saluputti is effective.
