Abstract

Learning foreign languages for worldwide communication has become increasingly important for university students as the desire for global integration has grown. As a result, English as a second language should become a required course at the university level. However, achieving their speaking competency level in this situation is difficult for English learners. Due to specific limitations in English speaking barriers, this research was conducted to find out the learners' barriers to speaking English. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data collected. The subjects of this research were the sixth-semester learners from five different study programs at the Christian University of Indonesia (UKI) Toraja (UKI Toraja). The researchers used a snowball sampling technique and elected 20 students as participants. To collect the data, the researchers used semi-structured interviews. The result of the data analysis showed that the sixth-semester learners found barriers in speaking English. Those barriers are: 1) psychological barriers (anxiety, shyness, nervousness, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes), and 2) linguistic barriers (lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the grammatical errors made by the students in translating Indonesian into English. Four objectives are fromulated: 1.To find out the types of errors that the students make in translating sentences from Indonesian into English 2.To find out the most frequent errors made by the students of UKI Toraja 3.To find out the source of error that the students make in translating Indonesian text into English text and 4. To find out the differences in number of grammatical errors made the students of different levels of UKI Toraja. The method used was a descriptive method. The population of this research was the fourth-semester and the sixth-semester students of UKI Toraja in the academic year 2014/2015. The fourth-semester students consisted of 270 as the population in this research. Thirty (30) students were taken as the sample. The sixth-semester students also consisted of 270 students as a population in this research and30 students were taken as the sample. The research findings reveal that the most frequent errors in both levels are errors in verbs; and that most of the errors are due to overgeneralization and the ignorance of the rule restriction. Keywords: Grammatical errors, Indonesian text, English text, Verb, Noun, Conjunction, Pronoun, Adjective, Adverb, Article, Preposition.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the error analysis by using translation test. This technique used in translating test which I focused on the analysis of the students’ error production in translating. This research formulates four objectives: 1.To find out the types of errors that the students make in translating sentences from Indonesian into English 2.To find out the most frequent errors made by the students of UKI Toraja 3. To find out the differences in number of grammatical errors made the students of UKI Toraja. The method used was descriptive method. The population of this research was the students of UKI Toraja academic year 2014/2015. The fourth semester students consist of 270 as population in this research. There were 30 students as sample in this research was taken from 270 students. The sixth semester students consisted of 270 students as a population in this research and there were30 students as sample of this research was taken from 270 students. It was taken by using cluster random sampling. Data and analysis of this research are the students’ translation from Indonesian text into English text.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether the use of picture in writingparagraph improves the students’ writing ability. This research used experimentalmethod. The population was the eleventh grade students of SMK. SPP. St. PaulusMakale, academic year 2015/2016, there were 62 students as population. Thesample of the research was the students of the XI-I. The writer used the clusterrandom sampling method, it means the researcher use one class as sample in thisresearch namely the eighth class one, and there were 31students as sample. Thedata collected through written pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed byusing the five components of writing, namely: content, organization, vocabulary,language use, and mechanic The result of comparison between students’ score inpre-test and post-test indicated that there was a significant differenceimprovement of writing ability between the students who were taught by pictureand those who were not. The mean score of pre-test was 53,41 and the mean scoreof post-test was 58,25. It means that the means score of post-test was improved4,84 than pre-test. The increasing of the mean score of post-test indicates thatteaching writing with using picture improves the students’ writing ability at TheEleventh Grade Students of SMK SPP. S.T PAULUS MAKALE.

Abstract

The Objective of this Research is to know the Competence of the Fifth Semester Studentsof English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja in Analyzing Values in The Film “TheTheory of Everything by Jane William”.The population of this research is the Fifth Semester Students of English Department’. Itconsists of nine classes and the number of students is 307. The researcher used Randomsampling technique, because the population is enough large, so the writer choose class Bwith 27 students randomly. The data obtained from the written test, where consist ofmultiple choice, the data is analyzed by used quantitative descriptive method. It was usedto know the students competence in analyzing film “ The Theory of Everything by JaneWilliam”.The result of the research shows that the competence of the fifth semester students inanalyzing film stage in 51. The writer thinks that they happened because most of thestudents still have problem in analyzing value in film “ The Theory of Everything by JaneWilliam”. Based on the result of the research, the writer concludes the studentscompetence in identifying values in the film “The Theory of Everything by Jane Williamstill poor.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ perception toward code switching performed by lecturers in teaching speaking at English Education Study Program at UKI Toraja. Researchers used descriptive quantitative methods. The population of this research are the 6th semester students who have finished taking Speaking courses. Random sampling technique is used in sample selection with questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The results of the study were processed using quantitave by calculating the percentage of 10 items presented in the questionnaire. The result shows that students have positive perception toward code switching performed in teaching Speaking.

Abstract

This publication systematically reviews literature on MBKM (Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka). As MBKM is relatively a new program, its prospects and challenges in its implementation in English language teaching are regarded important to be scholarly-reviewed. In this study, the total of 17 scholarly-published journals were systematically reviewed. The journals included in this study were those published in 2020 and 2021 which set “Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka” and/or “MBKM” as keywords. The searching was conducted on www.google.co.id. Based on analysis, it is found that all journals appreciate the MBKM programs as promising and innovative. Furthermore, the scholarly-published journals explore the MBKM programs through philosophical basis, its implementation, challenges, and how they are perceived. In addition, the 8 programs and 4 policies are mainly set as the findings. In this publication, the future of English language teaching and learning through 8 programs and 4 policies of “Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka” is addressed.

Abstract

Language will be acquired and mastered due to habitual factors. In the case of second language learning in higher education, it is expected that the use of English as language instruction is needed to improve students ability in Speaking. In fact, in the learning process, code-switching is still carried out by lecturers, and result of some studies shows that students respond positively to the it. The purpose of this study is to find out the function of code-switching carried out by lecturers in Speaking classes at UKI Toraja. Researchers used quantitative descriptive methods. This research population are lecturers who perform code-switching in Speaking courses in the classroom at UKI Toraja. Total sampling is used in sample selection with interviews as a tool for collecting data. The results of the study processed using quantitative descriptive methods. The result shows that lectures switch code in teaching Speaking for several functions. They are: a. to introduce new topic b. to create good learning atmosphere. c to build effective, flexible and non-rigid communication d. as a strategy to facilitate and check student understanding e. to minimize the students’ levels of anxiety in conveying their ideas.

Abstract

Selama penyebaran covid-19 kegiatan belajar mengajar di SMPN 3 Sesean Satap mengalamai kendala dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran daring karena akses internet yang sangat terbatas. Oleh karena itu tujuan dari Pengabdian ini adalah: 1) Untuk menambah literasi elektronik berbasis aplikasi Offline pada siswa SMPN 3 Sesean Satap demi meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran secara daring. 2) Melatih menggunakan aplikasi offline untuk bisa belajar mandiri selama pembelajaran daring. Untuk metode pelaksanaan Kegiatan ini dilakukan dalam empat tahapan yaitu: 1) sosialisasi, 2) Pelatihan, 3)Pendampingan, 4) Evaluasi. Setelah melakukan pelatihan ada tiga dampak positif yang dirasakan oleh siswa SMPN 3 Sesean Satap yaitu: 1) Sisawa dapat memanfaatkan aplikasi offline sebagai referensi/Literasi elektronik, 2) Siswa mampu menggunakan berbagai macam aplikasi offline untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. 3) Siswa dapat memanfaatkan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi sebagai media dan sumber pembelajaran bahasa inggris selama pembelajaran daring.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out of the teacher’s creativities on ELT during the pandemic covid-19 at SMA Negeri 1 Toraja Utara. This research is qualitative and the subjects were the english teacher at SMA Negeri 1 Toraja Utara. The researcher collected the data by interviewing the participants of this research. Next, the writer analyzed the data obtained to find out some creativities in ELT by the English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Toraja Utara based on the five categories those are : 1) Conveyed in presentation of lesson. 2) Creativity in giving assignments. 3) Creativity in teacher. 4) learner interaction. 4) Creativity in teacher characteristics. The result of the research of the research showed that the teachers used several applications to applied five categories of teacher’ creativities above, those are: WhatSapp, Google meet, Zoom meeting, Google classroom besides that the teacher also made tutorial video to do a assignment.
