Abstract

Formichi, Kiara, Islam in The Making of The Nation: Kartosuwiryo and Political Islam in 20th Century Indonesia. Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, 282, Leiden: KITLV Press, 2012, xvii, 244 pp. (map), USD 49.00, paper, ISBN 978-90-6718-386-4Chiara Formichi’s book, Islam and the Making of the Nation: Kartosuwiryo and Political Islam in 20th Century Indonesia (2012), is the most recent work on Kartosuwiryo and Negara Islam Indonesia (NII). Formichi perceives Kartosuwiryo and NII as Islamic political movement while discussing the place of Islam and Indonesian Muslims in the nation-state building. She argues that Kartosuwiryo movement and NII is the true expression of political Islam which aims at establishing ‘a federal Islamic state of Indonesia’ by collapsing the Indonesian state with Pancasila as its philosophical foundation. In her opinion, the roots of NII’s political Islam could be traced to the works and political activism of Kartosuwiryo in Sarekat Islam (SI), the first Islamic national movement in Indonesia, established in 1911. However, Formichi does not explain why the ideas, movement, struggle as well as the trial of establishing an Islamic state in Indonesia failed as confirmed by the experience of Kartosuwiryo and NII.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i1.883

Abstract

Carool Kersten. 2015. Islam in Indonesia: The Contest for Society, Ideas and Values, London: Hurst & Company, pp. 373+xx.Comprehensive studies of contemporary Indonesian Islam are still scarce. Most of the studies on this subject deal with certain aspects of current developments in Indonesian Islam. Kersten’s book is an attempt to present an intellectual history of contemporary Indonesian Islam in six chapters: first, secularism, pluralism and liberalism in Indonesia; second, Islam in Indonesia today: discourses and interlocutors; third, the weight of predecessors: adaptations, critique, and transformation; fourth, debating secularism: Islam, statehood and democracy; fifth, the letter or the spirit of Islamic law?: legal formalists versus substantivitst; sixth, contentious triangulation: religious pluralism, human rights and freedom of thought. This book can be considered as a sequel to the Indonesian part of the book written by the same author, Cosmopolitans and Heretics: New Muslim Intellectuals and the Study of Islam (2011).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i1.2905

Abstract

Thomas B. Pepinsky, R. William Liddle, and Saiful Mujani. 2018. Piety and Public Opinion: Understanding Indonesian Islam. Oxford: Oxford University PressSaiful Mujani, R. William Liddl, and Kuskridho Ambardi. 2018. Voting Behavior in Indonesia since Democratization: Critical Democrats. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. This article aims to review two books written by four foremost scholars in the field of political science. In the context of understanding Islam and the culture of democracy, these two books can answer questions that are often discussed, that is the relationship between religious piety and political behavior in Indonesia. Quantitatively, 99.7% of total Muslims in Indonesia state that religion is an important element in their lives. However, in terms of political preferences, this fact does not have implications for the votes obtained by Islamic-based political parties, especially in the post-Soeharto elections. They, instead of carrying out their own candidates, tend to be supporters in the presidential election and local leaders elections. To figure out this puzzle, these books are very pivotal works to understand the relationship between Islamic piety and politics. Both of these books show that there has been an increase in the level of piety of the Indonesian Muslims in the past two or three decades. However, creating piety does not affect their political behavior - specifically their voting behavior in elections.

Turmoil identity became one of the most obvious symptoms of Indonesian community in the Post-Soeharto Era. The roots of the turmoil of identity is not only related to changes in political, social, economic, cultural and religious locally internally, but also with the expansion and penetration of the change and globalization. The emergence of social violence, loss of patience, social temper, the decline of respect and obedience to the law, ethics and morals, as well as the nuances of ethnic and religious confl ict showed persistent social crisis that followed the disorientation of cultural identity. Keywords: kegalauan identitas, krisis identitas, kekerasan sosial, multikulturalisme, demokrasi, rejuvenasi Pancasila, bhinneka tunggal ika.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the application of zakat accounting at LAZ BAZNAS Jambi City, to identify the obstacles in implementing zakat accounting at LAZ BAZNAS Jambi City, and to determine the suitability of the zakat accounting application at LAZ BAZNAS based on PSAK No. 109. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through interviews. The results of the study indicate that, first, the application of zakat accounting at BAZNAS Jambi City—based on the elements of recognition, measurement, and disclosure—has been implemented in accordance with PSAK No. 109. In terms of presentation, BAZNAS Jambi City provides cash flow financial reports, and the amil section is also included in the fund change report. Second, the obstacles faced by BAZNAS Jambi City include inefficiency in the distribution process in terms of time and energy, and the inability to use banking accounts. Other challenges are related to the lack of understanding and skills among human resources, the complexity of transactions, and insufficient government support to enable cooperation with banks, which would facilitate the distribution of zakat funds. Third, the conformity of zakat accounting application at BAZNAS Jambi City has been generally appropriate. However, in the presentation of financial statements, there are no changes in managed assets and no notes to the financial statements. Therefore, in terms of conformity, the financial statements of BAZNAS Jambi City are not yet fully in accordance with PSAK No. 109.
