Abstract

Pesticides exposure affects respiratory system. The study of peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) as a parameter of lung function changes due to limited pesticide among farmers. This cross-sectional study aims to analyze factors affecting PEFR and formulate a model for predicting PEFR among 76 vegetable farmers using pesticides in Tlogolele Village, Boyolali Regency. Data were collected through questionnaire-based interview and clinical examination. PEFR test was conducted using a peak flow meter while cholinesterase level was investigated using Deutsche Gessellschaftfur Klinische Chemie method. The data were analyzed using unpaired T-test and Pearson test continued by multivariate regression models. The examination showed 75% of subjects had abnormal PEFR. Cholinesterase, body mass index, smoking habits, personal protective equipment usage, pesticide dosage, length of work per day, and last time of spraying did not show a significant correlation with PEFR. On the other hand, age, height, weight, frequency of spraying, and spraying duration showed a significant correlation with PEFR and a prediction equation for PEFR model was obtained as R2=0.268 (p0.001). The developed model will be useful for early detection of abnormal lung function.

Abstract

Background: The reading interest rate of Indonesian society is relatively low (approximately 0,001). Meanwhile, during their study, medical students have to read numerous English literatures. Previous research showed that reading activity can be improved by reading motivation. However, studies about Indonesian medical students reading motivation on English literature are still limited. This study aims to assess the effect of students’ English literature reading motivation to the block exam average score. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in January 2018. We used stratified random sampling, and we found 274 samples that fit with inclusion and exclusion criterias selected. The motivation was assessed using the English literature reading motivation scale, block exam test results were obtained through the academic database. Data were analyzed with multiple linier regression test.Result: Students’ English reading motivation increased the block exam average score of Medical Students. Every increase of one score of motivation significantly increase 0,10 score block exam average (p<0,001). Furthermore, every increase of one year of study can significantly increase 3,53 of block exam average score (p<0,001); R2=18,3 %. English literature reading motivation of medical students UNS is in middle category. Conclusion: English literature reading motivation increase the block exam average score of Medical Students in UNS.

Abstract

The elderly population in the world and Indonesia continues to increase. The increased population of elderly is a positive achievement of government programs in the health sector but it creates new problems because the elderly are more susceptible to degenerative diseases due to decreased organ function. One of the degenerative diseases is diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. This study aims to determine the relationship between magnesium intake, and zinc intake with fasting blood glucose levels in the elderly in Juwiring District, Klaten Regency. The subjects of this study were elderly in Juwiring District. Samples were taken using a multistage random sampling technique and obtained from 158 people. Characteristic data (gender, age, and education) were obtained from interviews. Magnesium and zinc intake were obtained from interviews using a recall 24 and a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Fasting blood sugar data were obtained from blood sugar examination using a glucometer, the subject had been conditioned to fast for 8 hours. Statistical analysis using Pearson product-moment. the results showed that there was a relationship between magnesium intake (p= 0.02, r=-0.249) and zinc intake (p= 0.04, r = -0.229) with fasting blood sugar levels. It is recommended that the elderly adjust their diet by consuming food sources of magnesium and zinc.

Abstract

Obesity in childhood is associated with early mortality, psychiatric, and cardiometabolic comorbidities, and is likely to remain into adulthood. One of the most often utilized models in health-related research to describe and predict behavioral health is the Health Belief Model. The current research aims to ascertain the link between adolescent fat intake and all HBM components. The design of this study was cross-sectional. Purposive sampling was the sampling method, and 110 participants from 4 secondary schools were included. The research data were analyzed using SPSS 27. Measurement of fat intake using a 24-hour food recall interview with two repetitions on non-consecutive days. HBM measurement using questionnaires with 59 questions representing 6 HBM constructs. The bivariate test was performed with the Spearman and Pearson tests. Variables significantly related to fat intake are cues to action and self-efficacy. The higher the cues to action, the lower the adolescent fat intake. Likewise, the higher the self-efficacy, the less fat intake in adolescents. HBM-based education is needed to increase adolescents' perceptions and beliefs regarding health problems, especially overweight, to support handling overweight issues in adolescents.
