Abstract

This paper presents a study of the optimal power flow (OPF) for a large scale power system. A metaheuristic search method based on the Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) algorithm is presented and has been confirmed in the real and larger scale Algerian 114-bus system for the OPF problem with and without static VAR compensator (SVC) devices. To get the highest impact of SVC devices in terms of improving the voltage profile, minimize the total generation cost and reduction of active power losses, the ALO algorithm was applied to determine the optimal allocation of SVC devices. The results obtained by the ALO method were compared with other methods in the literature such as DE, GA-ED-PS, QP, and MOALO, to see the efficiency of the proposed method. The proposed method has been tested on the Algerian 114-bus system with objective functions is the minimization of total generation cost (TGC) with two different vectors of variables control.

Abstract

The growth of computational intelligence technology has witnessed its application in numerous fields. Power system study is not left behind as far as computational intelligence trend is concerned. In power system community, optimization process is one of the crucial efforts for most remedial action to maintain the power system security. Basically, power scheduling refers to prior to fact action (such as scheduling generators to generate certain powers for next week). Power scheduling process is one of the most important routines in power systems. Scheduling of generators in a power transmission system is an important scheme; especially its offline studies to identify the security status of the system. This determines the cost effectiveness in power system planning. This paper investigates the performance of multi-verse based evolutionary programming (lowest EP) technique in the application of power system scheduling to ensure loss is gained by the system. Losses in the system can be controlled through this implementation which can be realized through the validation on a chosen reliability test system as the main model. Validation on IEEE 30-Bus Reliability Test System resulted that both techniques are reliable and robust in addressing this issue.

Abstract

As of late, expanding interest of renewable energy and consumption of non-renewable energy source have prompted developing advancement of renewable energy technology, for example, wind energy. Wind energy has turned out to be one of the reliable sources of renewable energy, which requests extra transmission capacity and better methods for sustaining system reliability. As of now, doubly fed induction generator wind turbine is the most well-known wind turbine. This paper focuses on DFIG wind farm design using MATLAB/SIMULINK and also investigates the issues of the system stability of the DFIG wind turbine micro grid power system. This analysis includes the changes of voltage, current, real power and reactive power based on various conditions of the power system.

Abstract

This paper presents Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) Based Technique for Distributed Generation Installation in Transmission System. In this study, WOA optimization engine is developed for the installation of Distributed Generation (DG). Prior to the optimization process, a pre-developed voltage stability index termed Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) was used as an indicator to identify the location for the DG to be installed in the system. Meanwhile, for sizing the DG WOA is employed to identify the optimal sizing. By installing DG in the transmission system, voltage stability and voltage profile can be improved, while power losses can be minimized. The proposed algorithm was tested on 30-bus radial distribution network. Results obtained from the EP were compared with firefly algorithm (FA); indicating better results. This highlights the strength of WOA over FA in terms of minimizing total losses.

Abstract

This research work discusses a control strategy to enhance the transient response of the fuel cell and boost the real and reactive power flow from grid connected to fuel cell. The current output of the fuel cell depends on the availability of hydrogen in the fuel cell stack, a battery bank is implemented to supply the transient current and to prevent it from hydrogen saturation. The battery should only supply when there is a transient. During steady state the total power is produced by the fuel cell by regulating its hydrogen input. A prototype of the system will be created to study a control scheme which regulates the current from an input source and a battery which is connected to a dc motor. The control philosophy is based on d-q transformation and subsequently generating a reference signal that is tracked by an IGBT based inverter. The speed of the motor is controlled using pulse with modulation. The dynamic modeling of the standalone fuel cell that is connected to a dc motor is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. The simulation results show that the control scheme works well, although the dynamic response of the system can be improved. The testing carried on the prototype proves that the concept works well, but a hydrogen control scheme should be developed to improve the efficiency of the control scheme.

Abstract

This paper presents a sizing optimization technique for Hybrid Stand-Alone Photovoltaic (HSAPV). In this research, three optimization techniques have been developed, namely Dolphin Echolocation Algorithm (DEA), Fast Evolutionary Programming (FEP), and Classical Evolutionary Programming (CEP). These techniques have been incorporated into the sizing process to maximize the technical performance of the SAPV system. The components of PV modules, charge controllers, inverters, and batteries are used to determine the optimum value. These components are used as the control parameters to maximize the expected performance ratio (PR) of the SAPV system. The Iterative Sizing Algorithm (ISA) is the benchmarking technique to conduct the optimization technique achieving maximum PR value and minimal computation time. Results obtained from the research show that DE overcomes FEP and CEP. In addition, the optimization techniques also demonstrated comparatively fast with respect to ISA as the benchmark technique."
