Abstract

Background: Medical students need the ability to write and present research. Skills needed are referencing, using internet to help their research, and searching literatures through search engines. The lack of students’ ability about searching a valid and reliable literature in the field of health and medicine according to EBM principle is a profound problem. Reflective thinking is also needed for the students to be able to reach meaningful learning. This study aimed to analyze the students’ reflective writings within the Medical Writing Program. Method: This research was a descriptive-explorative study using a qualitative approach. Subjects comprised 207 first semester medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia batch 2012. Qualitative data were collected from students’ written reflections about their learning experiences in MWP program. Qualitative analysis utilized content analysis included identification, coding, categorization, and synthesis. Results: Students found that Zotero® was helpful as reference manager program in their writings. Zotero® Volunteer Troops also helped them in learning to use Zotero® and they felt more comfortable learning from their peers. EBM helped students searching and synthetizing literatures. Students also indirectly learned soft skills such as teamwork, time management, and speed reading in English (not their natives language)Conclusion: Students had positive views of the program and its implementation. Students understood the importances of learning the MWP and felt that they could implement their studies directly in their academic careers.

Abstract

Background: E-learning community (eLC) of the School of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia consisted of twelve students. eLC trained lecturers  about e-learning in personal or small group format. This study aimed to compare the differences between the development of computer-related attitude between lecturers and e-learning community members upon the service from e-learning community for lecturers. Method: This research was an experimental quantitative and qualitative study. Subjects were 12 students of eLC and 32 lecturers who received eLC’s services. The quantitative data was collected through questionnaires of the Computer Anxiety Rating Scale (CARS) and Computer Self-Efficacy (CSE). The qualitative data was collected through focus group discussion and in-depth interviews. CARS and CSE data were collected four times: (1) prior to the eLC trainings, (2) right after the eLC first training, (3) after the second training of eLC, and (4) right after one month of the last training from eLC. Data analysis was conducted using Friedman test, Mann-Whitney test. Qualitative data analysis were performed using content analysis. Results: There was a significant decrease from the score of CARS 1 to the score of CARS 4 for the eLC members (p=0,045). Results of CSE for eLC members showed no significant differences across the data collection. For faculty members, the significant differences were found between CARS 3 and CARS 4 (p=0,014). CSE scores of faculty members showed no significant differences. Comparison of CARS and CSE between faculty members and eLC members showed no significant differences. The qualitative data analysis showed some important aspects found in both of the groups. There are communication, interaction, the importances of eLC trainings, as well as suggestions to both of the groups about e-learning. Subjects’ opinions were divided into two groups: one who experienced positive changes in their computer-related attitude and one who did not experience any changes. Conclusion: Faculty members found that eLC were important in relation to e-learning training for lecturers. Students strongly agreed that being the member of eLC made him/her had a great opportunity to closely communicate to their lecturers. The faculty members’ anxiety level of computer using was low; on the other hand, their awareness of computer technology was good enough. Abstract

Background: To keep up with current development in medicine, every doctor is demanded to be able to do continuing medical education (CME) after finishing their medical degree. However, health education institutions are responsible to make sure their graduates are able to do so by developing their self regulated learning (SRL) skills. Therefore, we developed a learning module that not only use adult learning approach but also maximizing the teachers’ role in the teaching and learning process by using a programmatic assessment model.Method: The learning activities mostly used SCL approach (62,7%), and were comprised of 8 different learning method. The assessment activities were done by using a combination of assessment method to assess the student’s cognitive, skills, and professional behavior. The student was also asked to do a self evaluation using reflective writing assignment, and each of the student also received 360 degree. Each student was assigned to 1 mentor to guide him/her throughout the course. Results: More than half of the students (52,24%) claimed that they were ‘forced’ to take the course because they didn’t get into their first choice elective block. However, at the end of the block, all of the students had a change of perspective and agreed that this block was interesting and useful for them. Conclusion: The students are able to be independent if we, as teachers, maximized our role as facilitators and mentors, and give the students bigger autonomy in their study.

Abstract

Background: Universities’ core values need to be translated into real learning design. At the end of the preclinical phase, the curriculum turned into a more comprehensive and full of trustworthiness of knowledge and attitudes. Meanwhile, the development of attitudes requires intensive support (mentoring). The team intended to translate the core values of Atma Jaya (Christianity, Excellence, Professional, Caring, KUPP) into an instructional design. Mentoring was the selected approach to build a dialogue and work together with students. In this article we presented the implementation of mentoring on the Elective Block of Medical Education (Block IPK) for the 7th semester medical students at Atma Jaya School of Medicine (August-September 2015, 5 weeks). The Block IPK then was followed by an advanced mentoring until the end of November 2015. We intended to realise KUPP through mentorship throughout Block IPK until the end of the first semester of 2015/2016. In particular, this action research was intended to find answers to research questions: (1) What were perceived by the students throughout the mentoring in the Block IPK ?, (2) What were perceived by the students throughout the mentoring after Block IPK?, (3) What products were the students proud of after the mentoring?Method: Qualitative analysis using Delphi method were utilized to determine the main theme. Analyses were fulfilled using interpretive analysis. Data were taken from: reflective writing, FGD or interviews, email communication, and the mentors’ observation. The Delphi was performed in three rounds.  Results: Findings showed positive impression on Block IPK. Students were aware of the meaning or significance of Block IPK. Field trip and working group were learning methods which considered to be important, because the methods had succeeded in generating meaningful learning for students. Approximately 40-50% of the students stated the significance of working group in Block IPK. Approximately 50-75% of students experienced personal cultivation. Approximately 67-75% of the class stated the superiority of Blok IPK and mentoring. Students appreciated the working group, which gave opportunities to have a discussion on campus with mentors. Mentoring had advantages in terms of students’ cultivation of the freedom of thought and to proceed further learning (advance learning). Conclusion: Students perceived positively to mentoring activities during and after the Block IPK. Mentoring benefited to personal cultivation, academic support, role modeling and leadership. The implication to medical education institutions was to implement a mentoring steadily.

Abstract

Background: Studies showed that SCL improved quality of medical education through knowledge acquisition, class performance, students’ attitude and soft skills. Although research about SCL and its impact has been widely known, overall correlation of SCL to the class performances has not yet been established. Strong correlation between SCL to class performances would serve the purpose of teaching and learning and more importantly would answer the skepticism of institution or faculty members in implementing SCL. In addition, learning through systematic review of others’ studies, how SCL influenced soft skill aspects would be benefited for medical educators. Soft skills such as learning motivation, communication skills, and teamwork may lead educators to the favor of SCL approaches. This review was to find the correlation of student-centered learning to the students’ performances and soft skill aspects in medical education.Method: To find the correlation of the SCL and class performances, we used meta-analysis. We also performed a systematic review to qualitatively find the relationship between SCL and other aspects, such as teamwork, communication skills, and learning motivation. Literatures were filtered from databases of: Proquest, Springerlink, Biomed Central (BMC) open, BMJ open, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were published empirical articles (2000-2013) reported SCL’s effect on class performances or other aspects (learning motivation, teamwork, communication skills). We utilized PRISMA protocol to filter the inclusion articles. By reading abstracts and further snowballing searching, we found 12 articles for the meta-analysis and 33 articles for the systematic review.                                                                 Results: Among 12 articles of the meta-analysis, 9 articles showed positive correlation between SCL and class performances. Three studies reported that SCL had no effect on the class performances. None of the articles reported any negative impact. We utilized the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software to analyze the data and found r = 0.46 and 95% CI: 0.32 - 0.57. It showed a statistically significant correlation between SCL and class performances. On the systematic review, we found that SCL improved communication skills, team work, and learning motivation. Conclusion: From the meta-analysis we found that SCL improved class performances about 46%. It was showed that SCL methods were superior in improving soft skills such as communication skills, teamwork, and learning motivation.
