Abstract

This study aims to document the assessment of alumni of teachers professional education program (PPG) in Riau University on the effectiveness of the PPG program in preparing prospective professional English teachers. All alumni of the 2018 subsidized PPG program at the University were selected as the sample of this study (15 people). Data was collected through the distribution of a Google form-based survey which was adopted from the PPG program evaluation questionnaire from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education. This study found that from the curriculum aspect, 84.6% of alumni said that the PPG curriculum content was in accordance with the needs of pre-service English teachers. However, 76.9% of participants stated that most of the material had been studied when they were in the undergraduate program. In terms of learning facilities, only 23.1% answered that they were satisfied with PPG facilities. 46.2% of them stated that the lecture room was not feasible. From the aspect of organizing services to students, only 42.6% said they were satisfied. The rest answered simply enough. From the aspect of the impact of the program, 69.2% of participants admitted that PPG had a significant impact on the development of their teaching profession. The greatest impact is on the aspect of both professional and pedagogical competencies. Thus, even though PPG is generally considered to be running quite well and has a positive impact, there are several aspects that need to be the attention of PPG organizers for the improvement of PPG in the future.

Abstract

This research discussed the correlation between English department students' habit in watching English movies and their vocabulary knowledge. The background of conducting this research is to see how the possibility of students' habits in watching English movies influenced students' vocabulary knowledge. Furthermore, to find out if there is a significant correlation between English department students' habit in watching English movies and their vocabulary knowledge, this research determines the descriptive correlational method as the research design. After collecting and analyzing the data, it is obtained that the students' habit in watching English movies is categorized in the "high" habit category, and vocabulary knowledge is categorized in "good" ability, and significant correlation value is in moderate level correlation. In other words, it is implied that the students' habit in watching English movies was influenced to the acquisition of students' vocabulary knowledge.

Abstract

This study has an objective to find out the code mixing types used in Instragram bythe English Department students -Universitas Riau. The respondents of thisresearch were all related students in2016/2017 academic year. The researcherused descriptive qualitative research design and the data were collected from documents as the instrument. Then, Hoffman‟s theory (1991) was used for data analysis to find out the types of code mixing used by these students. Thus the research finding has revealed that all of the three types of code mixing appearedin the captions or comments written by the students as suggested by Hoffman. There were twenty-nine data classified into intra- sentential, two data classified into intra-lexical code mixing, two data classified into involving a change of pronunciation and two data classified into both intra-sentential code mixing and intra- lexical code mixing. Abstract

This paper describes a community service program conducted by Riau University lecturers which aims to develop several aspects of 21st-century competence through a series of soft skills training for forty participants. This paper further explains the concept of training, the content of the training materials, and the effectiveness of the training. This training lasted for two months with four virtual face-to-face training via Zoom Meetings. The rest was done online through the Google Classroom platform. The content of the training material is divided into two sub soft skills: increasing the ability to take international standard tests (International English Language Testing System/IELTS) and developing public speaking skills. Data from a survey conducted at the end of the program showed that in general, this activity had been running well and effectively. The majority of participants (85.7%) stated that the training activities provided positive benefits for them. More specifically, 63.2% of participants said that their listening skills had improved considerably after the training. Similar data occurs for reading and writing skills (68.4% and 52.6%, respectively). Similar data also appeared in the aspect of public speaking training where the majority of participants admitted that their abilities were getting better after attending the training, especially in terms of engagement with the audience. Thus, this training has benefited the trainees in developing their soft skills.

Abstract

Instructional design has a strong influence on the success of university-level learning. Learning in higher education is effective if it is designed properly by the course unit tutor because the instructional design helps the preparation of a good lesson plan that contains objectives, materials, methods, media, class activities, evaluations, and so on. There are various instructional design models and one of the popular designs for media application is ASSURE. Some experts use the acronym ASSURE differently. In this article, ASSURE consists of Analyze learners, State objectives, Select method-media-materials, Utilize media-materials, Require learner participation, Evaluate and revise. The ASSURE model can be applied to various fields of study and levels, but has never been published in English language learning at university. Therefore, this article will explain the application of the ASSURE model in general English courses in universities.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of expressive speech acts and the context of the expressive speech acts uttered by the main character in the Joker movie. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative research. The data source was the Joker Movie directed by Todd Phillips. The movie was released in 2019 and its duration was about 1 hour 55 minutes. The data of this research were utterances included as expressive speech acts. The data were collected by watching, observing, and writing down the utterances indicated as expressive speech acts found in the movie. The data were analyzed by using formal and informal methods. The data were presented by using a table (Formal method) and description (Informal method). The contexts of the utterances were analyzed by using SPEAKING model. The results of the analysis showed that there were six classifications of expressive speech acts uttered by the main character in the Joker Movie. The total number of expressive speech acts found in the movie was 27 utterances covering 7 utterances of greeting, 6 utterances of agreeing, 5 utterances of thanking, 4 utterances of apologizing, 3 utterances of wishing, and 2 utterances of exclamation. The researcher found that the expressive speech act of greeting was the most frequently used by the main character. It showed that the main character liked to express his salutation when he met someone.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the level of speaking anxiety experienced by a group of pre-service English teachers at a university in Indonesia and investigating the factors contributing to their speaking anxiety. Using cluster random sampling, this mixed-method research took 30 pre-service English teachers from the same class as the research participants. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaires were adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is overall in the mildly anxious level. It was identified that there were six students (20%) in the level of very anxious, seven students (23%) in the level of anxious, 14 students (47%) in the mildly anxious level, one student (3%) in the relaxed level, and two students (7%) in the very relaxed level. The interview data indicated that the anxiety was likely because of several inter-related factors: social, linguistic, and personal factors. The social factors include fear of making mistake, feeling under pressure dealing with people, afraid of negative evaluation by teachers, worrying of losing face; the linguistic factor relates to students’ lack of English ability (grammatical issues, proper pronunciation, and vocabulary). While from the personal factor deal with issues such as low motivation and and family problems.

Abstract

This descriptive quantitative research was designed to discover the proficiency of the third-semester students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau in comprehending the Reading Section of TOEFL. The population of this research was the third-semester students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau which consisted of 119 students. The sample was 119 students selected by using the total sampling technique. The instrument of the research was a TOEFL Reading Comprehension Section test which consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The students’ scores in the TOEFL Reading Test were analyzed in selecting skills based on the blueprint of the test related to the reading syllabus that samples took on Reading Comprehension III class. From the data analysis, the average score is 37. The researcher found that the students’ reading proficiency can be categorized as poor in level. Using Contexts for Vocabulary reaches the highest score (58), while Scanning for details is the lowest score (43). The finding implied that the third-semester students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau should improve their proficiency in comprehending Reading Section of TOEFL to get a better score.

Abstract

This correlation research was conducted to discover the correlation between students’ family support and English learning achievement of third-yearstudents at the English study program of Universitas Riau. The instruments of the research were the students’ family support questionnaire and thestudent’s English learning achievement scores. The questionnaire, which consisted of 34 questions, was adapted from the Social Family SupportScale and adapted from Thoriq in 2013. The students’ English learning achievement was gained from their GPA (Grade Point Average) of Englishlanguage skills subjects; Listening Comprehension 1, 2, 3; Speaking 1, 2, 3; Reading Comprehension 1, 2, 3; and Writing 1, 2, 3. The population ofthis research was the third-semester students of the English study program at Universitas Riau, which comprised 110 students. A cluster randomsampling technique was used and this research involved 89 students as samples. The results show that the correlation between students’ familysupport and their English language skill learning achievement was categorized in the “moderate level”, the family support level was categorized as“high level” and their English language skills learning achievement was classified as “good level” and it was categorized as B+, and thecontribution of students’ family support for their English language skills learning achievement is 16.9%.

Abstract

Today's youth face challenges and competition in life that is more complex than in previous times because the world is getting smaller due to globalization. The problem is that many youths do not yet have sufficient skills to exist in this rapidly changing era. This paper describes a community service activity sponsored by a group of lecturers in the English Education and Communication Studies Study Programs of Universitas Riau which aims to develop the ability of Riau youth to take the international standardised English test (IETLS). This paper further explains the concept of training, the content of the training materials, and the effectiveness of the training. This training lasts for one month with four face-to-face training sessions. The rest is done online through the Google Classroom platform. The content of the training material focuses on improving the ability to take international standardized tests (IELTS). Data from the self-assessment conducted at the end of the service activity session showed that in general this activity had been running well and effectively. The training activities provided positive benefits for the participants as seen from the average self-assessment data in the very good category (3.52). More specifically, the average increase in participants' listening skills after the training was in the very good category (3.43). The speaking ability of the trainees has increased and is in the very good category (3.54). This increase also applies to reading and writing skills in the same category (3.63 and 3.47, respectively). Thus, this training has benefited the trainees in developing their soft skills.
