Abstract

One of several factors that makes students successful in learning English as a foreign language is determined by the methods and techniques used by the English teachers in English language teaching. Of course, the methods and the techniques applied by the teachers in the classroom vary from one teacher to another teacher. In addition, the methods and techniques used rely on the language skills and language components, the objective of teaching and learning designed, students’ English proficiency levels as well as the teachers’ knowledge and experience in implementing the methods and techniques used  when teaching and learning takes place in the classroom. Grammar as one of the language components has an important role to play to support the students to be able to learn and use productive skills (speaking and writing), and receptive skills (listening, and reading). Therefore, this paper limits its discussions on methods and techniques used in teaching Grammar in ELT. In this paper, the writer will discuss the definitions of methods, techniques, teaching and how the teachers apply them practically in the classroom. It is expected that this paper is useful not only to increase the quality of English teachers but also the quality of students or graduates from the schools.

Abstract

The ability to assess speaking in English language teaching is very important for English teachers because as one of language productive skills, speaking cannot be assessed directly and objectively by unqualified and inexperienced English teachers. This is in line with the teachers and lecturers law No. 14, 2005 which states that one of main duties of professional teachers is assessment. Therefore, this paper seems to be useful to improve their knowledge and understanding in assessment to avoid and reduce their subjectivity in assessing this productive skill. This paper also describes how to assess speaking skill, definitions of assessment, speaking, measurement, evaluation and test, characteristics of assessment and measurement, the difference between traditional assessment and alternative assessment. Besides, several purposes of assessment are also described in the paper to improve teachers’ insight in this topic. Keywords: assessment, speaking, evaluation, measurement, and test

Abstract

Abstract This research aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pretest and posttest design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data was a reading test in multiple choice forms. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 59.03 and post-test is 62.97. In the other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.907) is higher than t-table (3.365) at the significance level 0.1%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. It is suggested that in understanding recount text is one of alternatives, the teacher needs to focus on the students’ understanding of the sentences on the texts. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh signifikan penggunakan strategi PQ4R pada kemampuan siswa tahun kedua MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru dalam memahami teks recount. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian pra-eksperimental dengan desain satu kelompok pretest dan posttest. Penelitian ini menggunakan data kuantitatif dan instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah tes membaca dalam bentuk pilihan ganda. Hasilnya, nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 59,03 dan post-test adalah 62,97. Dengan kata lain, skor rata-rata post-test lebih tinggi daripada skor rata-rata pre-test. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-test (8,907) lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (3,365) pada tingkat signifikansi 0,1%. Ini berarti bahwa Hipotesis Alternatif (Ha) diterima. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan menggunakan strategi PQ4R pada kemampuan siswa tahun kedua MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru dalam memahami teks recount. Disarankan bahwa dalam memahami teks recount, salah satu alternatif adalah guru perlu fokus pada pemahaman siswa tentang kalimat pada teks.

Abstract

This study aims to assess and analyse the sorts of speech functions used by teachers in the tenth grade at one vocational high school in Jambi, Indonesia, and to identify the most prevalent kind. The study was carried out using descriptive qualitative research and descriptive analysis design. In this study, data were triangulated through observation and documentation. The study's targets were English teachers, and the transcribed data was divided into three categories of language functions. Holmes' concept is applied to classify speech functions. There are three types of utterance functions: expressive, imperative, and referential. The results showed that out of 60 speech functions, the directive function was applied by instructors the most frequently, accounting for 31 of them (51.66%). Directive one is the main reason, as it delivers interaction by directing and requesting the student. The study recommends that there are still many types of speech functions, but alternatively, directives are more prominent. Other researchers can gather data from many sources, including Instagram's English-language account, an English newspaper or magazine, and many more. The current study encourages English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to complete a task and determine an assignment for future research. Given the implications of directive functions for English teachers in teaching speaking skills and the ability to inquire about something and command and request learners to perform something.

Abstract

This research used descriptive-quantitative design which aims to find out the vocabulary knowledge level of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Mudik. The sample of this research is class XI MIPA 3 of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Mudik which were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of the students is 32 students. The students were given The Updated Vocabulary Test (UVLT) that is adopted by Webb, et.al (2017). The result shows that the level of vocabulary knowledge of the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Mudik is still below the threshold needed for reading or daily conversation. There were only 2 students who reached the mastery score at the 1000 level, and none of them at the 2000-5000 level. High frequency vocabulary will have a greater influence on students, according to Webb (2017). Teachers are recommended to increase students’ vocabulary knowledge through reading activities and additional vocabulary tasks.

Abstract

 Abstrak: Salah satu kemampuan bahasa terpenting yang dibutuhkan siswa adalah pemahaman bacaan. Memahami makna teks untuk menentukan makna kalimat leksikal disebut pemahaman bacaan. Membaca juga melibatkan proses penerjemahan. Konten tekstual dan menerjemahkan teks dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain merupakan subjek kegiatan penerjemahan. Akibatnya, siswa memperoleh sejumlah keuntungan dari proses penerjemahan dalam hal meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada korelasi yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca dan kemampuan menerjemahkan mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Riau. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi kuantitatif. Metodologi penelitian kuantitatif korelasional digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Tujuannya adalah untuk menunjukkan hubungan antara dua variabel. Dalam penelitian ini, dua variabel adalah pemahaman bacaan siswa dan kemampuan menerjemahkannya. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 3 siswa kelas enam semester, sedangkan sampelnya adalah 37 siswa dari kelas B. Data dikumpulkan dari dua bagian tes, yaitu pilihan ganda dan tes esai. Hasil hipotesis menunjukkan hipotesis alternatif (Ha), yaitu Asymp.sig. (2-tailed) sebesar (0,01 < 0,05). Dengan demikian, terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara pemahaman bacaan dan kemampuan menerjemahkan siswa. Diharapkan materi pembelajaran seperti penggunaan novel, berita, artikel, dan media tertulis lainnya dapat meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan dan kemampuan menafsirkan siswa.
