Abstract

The objectives of this research are to analyze the types of errors which students made in writing degrees of comparison and to find out the sources of the errors. This research is a mixed-method research, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods within a single research project. Using cluster sampling, 25 third grade students of MTs Masmur Pekanbaru were chosen as the sample of this research. The instruments used to get the data are written tests and semi-structured interviews. The procedure of error analysis was used to analyse the data, which are process of identification, description, explanation, and evaluation of errors. Based on the process of identification and description, it was found that students committed 365 errors that were classified into four types of error: misformation (60,27%), omission (26,58%), addition (6,85%), and misordering (6,30%). This study also revealed that the sources of the errors are: intralingual transfer (61,39%), communication strategy (17,82%), interlingual transfer (14,85%), and context of learning (5,94%). Furthermore, the errors committed by students were reconstructed into the correct form as the evaluation. Therefore, several recommendations were given to the students such as trying to explore more learning sources like grammar books, English courses, or the internet to expand their knowledge of English grammar and to develop their writing ability. In line with that, it’s important for teachers to adopt innovative methods of teaching with detailed explanations to encourage students in learning, especially in writing degrees of comparison, to prevent the errors that occur in the future.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to 1) know the management of extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang; 2) know the innovation extracurricular activities in the development of character in students of SMA Negeri 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang; 3) know the shape of the character development of students in extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang. This type of research in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach using observations, interviews, and documentation. The result of this research shows that extracurricular management and extracurricular development at SMA Negeri 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang can achieve goals through planning, organizing, controlling, and monitoring. Self-development and innovation activities carried out through these extracurricular can impact the development of the character of students, such as confidence, discipline, responsibility, hard work, self-reliance, empathy, better academic abilities, better educational satisfaction, and higher self-concept.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop interactive learning media for narrative texts at SMK Telkom Pekanbaru and to know the validity of interactive learning media for narrative at SMK Telkom Pekanbaru. This research used research and development method. This development used type of research is ADDIE model. Data analysis technique in this research used needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaire by material expert and media expert. The result of the research shows that the range of mean obtained from the material expert is 4.3 meanwhile from the media expert is 4.4. They fall into the “very good” category. The result indicates that the interactive learning media is appropriate to be used for the 10th Grade Students of SMK TELKOM Pekanbaru.  The use of interactive learning media has motivated and helped students in the learning process, especially in reading narrative texts. students can learn independently in a fun way. They no longer feel bored in the process of learning to read.

Abstract

Technology has received a lot of attention because of its potential to solve learning problems in this modern era. Disinterest and low participation of students in the learning process, encourage teachers to use technology as a medium to increase students' enthusiasm for learning English, especially speaking. This research aims to determine whether Hello English application had a significant impact on speaking ability. Pre-experimental research was employed to conduct this research. The sample of this research consisted of 35 students from class XI MIA 1 at SMAN 3 Padang Sidimpuan. The pretest is used to determine the students' initial speaking ability. The posttest was conducted after the treatment was applied in four meetings utilizing Hello English application as a supporting medium in learning English. The t-test formula was used to analyze the collected data. Based on the findings of this research, the t-count value was 26.727, and the t-table value was 2.032. It denotes the alternative hypothesis (Ha) regarding there is a significant effect of Hello English application on the speaking ability of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3 Padang Sidimpuan is accepted.

Abstract

Grammarly has got a lot of attention among academics especially because it is a powerful tool that can be used by writers to improve their writing quality. They need it as a medium for correcting writing errors. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Grammarly on the students' writing quality of the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Ujung Batu. In particular, this study explores if there is any significant effect of Grammarly on students' writing quality in terms of grammatical accuracy, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. This is quantitative research using the pre-experimental method. The subject consists of 30 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data were collected from a pre-test and a post-test of writing an explanation text written before and after being corrected using Grammarly. The hypothesis test was conducted using Wilcoxon Test. The result shows an alternative hypothesis which is the Asymp. Sig. is 0.00<0.05. So, Grammarly has a significant effect on students' writing quality in eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 1 Ujung Batu. This study implies that Grammarly can be useful as a learning media as self-editing for students to improve their writing ability.

Abstract

The students at the university under investigation are required to successfully complete the TOEFL Prediction test in order to be eligible for graduation. This study was conducted to assess the perceptions of these students regarding the TOEFL Prediction test as one of the graduation requirements. The research employed a descriptive-quantitative methodology and involved 171 English Study Program students from three different academic batches. A questionnaire served as the primary instrument for data collection, with data analysis carried out using Microsoft Excel and SPSS statistics version 26. The results of the data analysis indicated that the mean scores for most items in the questionnaire were in the high range. Specifically, 25 out of the 29 questionnaire items obtained mean scores above 3.40, demonstrating that students' perceptions in this study leaned positively toward the TOEFL Prediction test policy. However, it's important to note that nearly half of the students recognized that the TOEFL Prediction test is not an easy test. Furthermore, there is room for improvement in terms of students' understanding of the type of TOEFL test provided by the language centre at the university and the benefits of the TOEFL certificate. These findings can provide valuable input for the university's policymakers and administrators. They can use this information to design new initiatives and strategies aimed at assisting students in improving their test-taking skills and their understanding of the TOEFL Prediction test's structure. Such efforts can contribute to enhancing students' overall readiness for this requirement.

Abstract

 Abstrak: Salah satu kemampuan bahasa terpenting yang dibutuhkan siswa adalah pemahaman bacaan. Memahami makna teks untuk menentukan makna kalimat leksikal disebut pemahaman bacaan. Membaca juga melibatkan proses penerjemahan. Konten tekstual dan menerjemahkan teks dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain merupakan subjek kegiatan penerjemahan. Akibatnya, siswa memperoleh sejumlah keuntungan dari proses penerjemahan dalam hal meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada korelasi yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca dan kemampuan menerjemahkan mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Riau. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi kuantitatif. Metodologi penelitian kuantitatif korelasional digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Tujuannya adalah untuk menunjukkan hubungan antara dua variabel. Dalam penelitian ini, dua variabel adalah pemahaman bacaan siswa dan kemampuan menerjemahkannya. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 3 siswa kelas enam semester, sedangkan sampelnya adalah 37 siswa dari kelas B. Data dikumpulkan dari dua bagian tes, yaitu pilihan ganda dan tes esai. Hasil hipotesis menunjukkan hipotesis alternatif (Ha), yaitu Asymp.sig. (2-tailed) sebesar (0,01 < 0,05). Dengan demikian, terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara pemahaman bacaan dan kemampuan menerjemahkan siswa. Diharapkan materi pembelajaran seperti penggunaan novel, berita, artikel, dan media tertulis lainnya dapat meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan dan kemampuan menafsirkan siswa.

Abstract

This  research  aims to  find  out the correlation between the use of YouTube and speaking ability on English Department students of Riau University. The research design was descriptive correlational that focused on the quantitative approach. The population of the research is the fourth semester of the English department with 76 students involved as the research samples.  To collect  the  data,  the  researcher  used two  research instruments;  a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire is to gain the data of the students’ use of YouTube while the test is for the data of the students’ speaking ability. The analysis of the data was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The findings revealed that the mean score of the students’ social use of YouTube is 75.58, interpreted as ‘average’, whereas the mean score of the students’ speaking ability is 69.99, interpreted as ‘good’. Then this research discovered the  correlation  coefficient  between  the  two  variables  is  0.471,  and  following  the classification of correlation by Sugiyono (2009), this number denotes a ‘moderate’ and ‘positive’ correlation. Also, the  determinant coefficient  is  0.2218, indicating that the students’ use of YouTube has 22% influence on their speaking ability, leaving the other 78% to other factors, such as cognitive ones (conceptualization, formulation, and articulation), lingustic ones (pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary), and affective ones (self-control and anxiety). Having found these findings, it can be confirmed that the use of YouTube can influence students’ English speaking ability very well if they start using it wisely.
