Abstract

Abstract: The research aims to investigate the effect of Discovery Learning Strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Sungai Mandau in comprehending narrative texts. In conducting the research, pre- experimental research with one group pre-test post- test design was used. The sample of this research was the students of class VIIIc which consisted of 29 students. The pre- test was administered before the treatment. After the treatment was applied for four meetings using Discovery Learning Strategy, a post-test was administered. The data were analyzed using the t-test formula. From the calculation, the writer found that the value of t-test was 2.311 while the t-table was 2.048. Since the t-test value was larger than that of t-table, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was a significant effect of Discovery Learning Strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Sungai Mandau in comprehending narrative texts.Key Words: Reading,Reading Comprehension, Discovery Learning Strategy, Narrative Text

Abstract

This mixed-method research used questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and open-ended questions as the instrument of data collection.  Twenty-five samples were selected randomly from 112 populations. The objectives of the study were to explore online reading strategies in academic reading by foreign language learners during the Covid 19 outbreak. This study revealed that: Using online reading strategies by foreign language learners were varied in four different types, namely global strategy, problem-solving strategy, support strategy, and soci0-effective strategy. Motivation influenced foreign language learners' online reading strategies for  13.65%  in academic reading during the Covid 19 outbreak; meanwhile, age and gender influenced less. Motivation influenced online reading strategies used by foreign language learners during the Covid 19 outbreak for two purposes: integrated and instrumental motivations. These two types of motivation influenced the choices and use of learners' online reading strategies during the Covid 19 outbreak.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Ingris di  Kecamatan Bengkalis, kabupaten Bengkalis Riau   belum mencapai hasil yang  diharapakan. Rendahnya kemampuan guru dalam memguasai materi ajar dan teknik mengajar  berkontribusi terhadap rendahnya  motivasi, kemampuan berbahasa  Inggris siswa PAUD. Untuk itu dilakukan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat melalui pelatihan teknik Fun Game.  Khalayak sasaran dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah guru guru Bahasa Inggris PAUD di Kecamatan  Bengkalis.  Pemecahan masalah  adalah  dengan  memberi pelatihan mengajar Bahasa Inggris dengan Teknik Fun Game. Kegiatan pelatihan dilakukan selama 8 minggu. Hasil pengabdian masyarakat menujukan bahwa pelatihan dengan teknik fun game meningkatkan kemampuan dan keterampilan guru Bahasa Inggris PAUD dalam mengajar Bahasa Inggris. Dengan menerapkan teknik Fun Game dalam proses belajar mengajar dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa TK se-kabupaten Bengkalis. Dengan teknik Fun Game terbukti peserta pelatihan antusias belajar dan senang dalam mempelajari bahasa inggris

Abstract

Based on the curriculum of English Study Program FKIP University of Riau, Reading as a subject course is focused on reading for academic purposes which required high academically demanding. Data of students post-test in previous semester show that students find difficulties in comprehending academic text. The teaching method applied by lecturers in the reading class did not engage students to learn fully that the result of students reading score could not reach the minimum achievement criteria of Reading III. This research is classroom action research. The objectives of this study were to know how PBL can improve the reading comprehension of the third semester students of English Study Program FKIP University of Riau and to know what factors give dominant   increase to the reading comprehension of the third semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR.The result of the study found that PBL Model which is derived from constructivism theory can improve the reading comprehension the third semester students of English study program FKIP UR. The data analysis showed that the mean of pre test is 45.78, post test I is 70.03 and post test II is 75.95. The improvement was due to the increase on students’ activity and motivation well in learning reading by using PBL Model. It was because this model can facilitate students in identifying the problems,   brain storming, analyzing, formulating problem, self-study and presenting activities

Abstract

This classroom action research design was aimed at analysing students failure in learning ESP (English for specific purposes) and finding out its solution. The purpose of this study was to improve the ability of Coach  Study Program students of FKIP UNRI  in learning ESP  through STAR 7 Jumps model and to find out factors that contribute more to the improvement. Total 36  students which consisted of 27 boys and 9 girls involved as the participants of the study. This research was done in two cycles. Designing syllabus, evaluating teaching materials, and compiling teaching materials were also the procedures done in each cycle (Planning, action, observation and reflection). Semi-structured observation sheets and field note was used to identify how lecturer teaching and how learners learning and ESP achievement test was employed to identify students ability. The lecturer applied the seven steps of STAR well and it made the students more active, motivated and interested in learning ESP. Students’ ability in learning ESP was also improved where mean pre-test was 67, mean post-test cycle 1  was 73 and mean post-test cycle 2 was 76.  The most dominant factor that caused the improvement was the teaching materials about match sports topic by which most students were active in problem identification, brainstorming, analyzing and formulating problems, self-study and presentation.

Abstract

This paper discusses an experimental research study regarding the effect of PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summary, and Test) strategy on reading comprehension of the first-year students at SMAN 1 of Sabak Auh Siak. The study shows that 65% of the students have difficulties in comprehending the reading passage about a descriptive text. Based on the students’ reading indicators, it can be identified that they have difficulties in determining the main idea, locating references, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, and finding detailed information. This study uses a quantitative method on a true experimental design of two groups of first-year students using pre-test and post-test. The study involves 44 students, divided into two classes: the control class with 21 students and the experimental class with 23 students. The instrument is a test that consists of questions with multiple choices and four options (A/B/C/D). In order to analyze the data formula, statistical software namely SPSS version 23 is used to analyze the results of the study. The significant effect of PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summary, and Test) strategy on reading comprehension at the first-year students of SMAN 1 Sabak Auh in Kabupaten Siak (2-tailed) is. 000 ˂ .005, which means that the H0 is rejected, while Ha is accepted. Thus, there is a significant effect on first-year students' reading comprehension in descriptive text between the students who are taught by applying the PQRST strategy and those who are not.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of expressive speech acts and the context of the expressive speech acts uttered by the main character in the Joker movie. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative research. The data source was the Joker Movie directed by Todd Phillips. The movie was released in 2019 and its duration was about 1 hour 55 minutes. The data of this research were utterances included as expressive speech acts. The data were collected by watching, observing, and writing down the utterances indicated as expressive speech acts found in the movie. The data were analyzed by using formal and informal methods. The data were presented by using a table (Formal method) and description (Informal method). The contexts of the utterances were analyzed by using SPEAKING model. The results of the analysis showed that there were six classifications of expressive speech acts uttered by the main character in the Joker Movie. The total number of expressive speech acts found in the movie was 27 utterances covering 7 utterances of greeting, 6 utterances of agreeing, 5 utterances of thanking, 4 utterances of apologizing, 3 utterances of wishing, and 2 utterances of exclamation. The researcher found that the expressive speech act of greeting was the most frequently used by the main character. It showed that the main character liked to express his salutation when he met someone.

Abstract

Pentingnya kinerja seorang guru akan memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap tujuan pada suatu sekolah dalam meningkatkan output dari pendidikan yang telah diberikan. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah kuisioner yang diberikan kepada 104 orang guru yang dipilih secara acak sebagai sampel menggunakan metode simple random sampling. Penelitian dilakukan yaitu responden memberikan tanggapan terhadap kuesioner dalam bentuk skala likert. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah regresi linear berganda dan pengolahan data menggunakan program Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian pengalaman kerja memberi pengaruh terhadap kinerja guru, artinya semakin baik pengalaman kerja maka akan semakin baik kinerja guru dalam menjalankan tugasnya. Hal ini berarti bahwa pengalaman kerja merupakan variabel penting untuk diperhatikan agar kinerja guru  bisa meningkat. Dengan meningkatnya kinerja guru tentu akan berdampak pada pencapaian tujuan yang ditentukan sebelumnya, banyak pekerjaan dan perencanaan sekolah yang tercapai dan yang selesai tepat waktu. Kerja tim sangat erat kaitannya terhadap kinerja guru, artinya semakin tinggi kerja tim akan menunjang kinerja guru yang lebih baik. Oleh karena itu kerja tim merupakan hal penting untuk diperhatikan di dalam meningkatkan kinerja guru.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ difficulties in understanding descriptive texts at the second year of SMAN 3 Langgam, Riau. This was quantitative research. The population of this research was all students at the second year of SMAN 3 Langgam. The samples of this research were 34 students at XI IIS 1 class who were selected by using the cluster-random-sampling technique. The data were collected by using tests and questionnaires. The test consisted of 40 questions and the questionnaire consisted of 25 questions. The percentage of the answers of the reading test revealed eight components of reading comprehension. Six of them were categorized as high level difficult questions including difficulties in identifying vocabulary, generic structure, factual information, reference, language features, and social functions. Two of them were categorized as medium level including difficulties in identifying the main idea and inference. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the students found difficulties in understanding descriptive texts due to the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The intrinsic factors were limited vocabulary knowledge, problems in recalling information, lack of familiarity with the subject topic, lack of reading fluency, and problems in processing information after reading. Meanwhile, the extrinsic factors were weak verbal reasoning, problems in understanding the text because of the level of the text, and inadequate use of reading strategies in the teaching and learning process.
