Abstract

For several decades, the role of Muslim female in political arena is limited and still dominated by Muslim male figures. Religious doctrines seem to take part in constructing women into social life. Women are still perceived as secondary person before men, having much emotional feelings, and incapable to handle such social problems. It has been much demonstrated by traditional scholars that the providence of men is being a leader, having much power, and is rightly superior to women. In this case, contemporary feminist Muslim such like Fatima Mernissi, Riffat Hassan, Asghar Ali Engineer, and Fazlur Rahman has contended this notion. They argue that there was possibly different impression on the interpretation of Qur’an that affects Qura’nic worldview towards the existence of women. According to them, Qur’an was precisely revealed to liberate women from social subjection. This article scrutinizes methodological framework in establishing a new light of understanding Qur’anic verse on women, especially on the issues on the origins of women creature, leadership, attestation and the right for inheritance.

Abstract

Abstract

The leadership of Indonesian Muslim women experienced a development, marked by the ever extensive political roles. Some previous researches state that the factor of familial closeness (political dynasty), gender, collusion, sexiness and piety marketing stimulate women’s election in political contestations. But these reasons are not enough to explain the reason for women’s roles in the public, especially women of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). We suggest that women’s courage in the struggle for the political position is due to their desires to strive for women's rights that are ignored and not comprehensively understood by male leaders. The existence of the thought that women can (only) ‘understand women’ becomes the reason why regional leaderships are also seized by women. The article also shows the ability to integrate spirituality towards public roles by utilizing their social capitals. This paper also counters some arguments that women always lose in public sectors in political sector fights as they are under the shadow of their husbands or men.

Abstract

The local political contest in Sumenep in 2024 is not just an ordinary electoral competition, but rather a field of tug-of-war of hegemony between charismatic figures who are both kyais. This phenomenon suggests that local political dynamics are not solely influenced by the political party machine but are also driven by three primary pillars: religious hegemony, charismatic personality, and interconnected socio-political networks. In this context, kyais become the epicenter that is difficult to change by an additional power, where kyais’ standing is not merely a political power but also determines triumph through social power with the santri network and alumni. This article discusses how kyai personalities are formed and contested within the arena of local control. Kyai, who is usually used as a spiritual role model, is now involved as a strategic actor in the electoral political space. With a qualitative and quantitative approach, and data collected from interviews, observations, and documentation, these findings demonstrate that the personal charisma of the kyai is not isolated but is also strengthened by social networks, pesantren relationships, and pragmatic political affiliations. The Sumenep Election reveals a symbolic battle between moral authority, socio-religious values, and the power of patronage networks.

Abstract

Abstract

The public and political role of Muslim women in Indonesia has been on the increase in recent years. This is due family connections, gender equality, and religious piety. This article particularly highlights the political participation of Bu Nyai, Muslim personalities with pesantren backgrounds. This paper contends that their motive is their aspiration to advocate women's rights, which is often ignored by male-politicians. The idea that “only women understand women” represents another reason why these Bu Nyai compete in elections for public office. The Bu Nyai relies much on defending values and norms rather than on competence or experience. The wisdom behind this is the fact that Indonesian politics is not always about idea, as it is about sense and positive image. These are the so-called social and spiritual capitals that this paper tries to explore by referring to three Bu Nyai in East Java and their political aspiration in upholding norms by defending women. The rise of these Bu Nyai and their prominence in local elections is a direct testimony that Indonesian politics is not patriarchal. Their activism is an automatic repudiation of neo-liberal thesis that in major Muslim societies, women are politically marginalized.
