Abstract

This study analyzed the cultural identity in the novel East Wind: West Wind written by Pearl S. Buck by using postcolonial theory proposed by Bhabha (2007). It aimed to identify the cultural identity, that consists of stereotypes, mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity, and how it was experienced by the main character in the novel. This study used qualitative method with descriptive approach. The writer collected the data by reading the novel and highlighting the data from the narrations and utterances that were appropriate to the problem of study. The result of this study showed that there are cultural identity construction in the life of Kwei-lan’s, the main character in the novel, which trapped her into identity confusion. Two cultures, namely traditional Chinese and Western culture, cause Kwei-lan’s confusion of her identity. Kwei-lan's attempts to survive from this situation by imitating the modern lifestyle, such as habits, appearances, and parental actions. This cultural shift makes her feel uncanny or being in an unhomely moment where she sticks in the middle between past and present, or between her origin Chinese culture and her new modern Western life.

All forms of speech acts are evident, with a marked prominence of illocutionary acts such as ‘asking questions’ and ‘giving commands. Other examples include ‘giving directions’ and ‘representing information’. Notably, the identified perlocutionary acts are largely non-literal. Abstract

This research discusses the traumatic memory of Desmond Doss and analyzes Herndon’s narrative reconstruction of Desmond’s traumatic memory in his novel. This research uses the post-memory theory by Hirsch, through Freytag’s pyramid approach. The qualitative method and literary memory are use in this research. Data were acquired from the documentary interview, and the paragraphs that existed on every page of the novel. The researchers collected the date through four steps: exploration, reduction, abstraction, and read intensively. This research reveals that Desmond Doss experienced seven traumatic memories; he was frightened of the gun, intimidated, humiliated, lost his friend, Japanese Army strategies, and the aftermath. To make it entertaining to read, Herndon caught Desmond’s traumatic memory and reconstructed the narratives into his novel. To fulfill Herndon's and the reader’s satisfaction, he exaggerates and lessens some of the actual events. The purpose of narrative reconstruction in this novel was to modify what the author could not do in the past and fix it in the novel through his imaginative investment, along with highlighting the heroic story of Desmond Doss.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative and descriptive library research method to analyse viral political jargon circulating on social media, such as "AMIN," "Gemoy", "Sat Set - Tas Tes” and others. Data was collected using observation and note-taking techniques and analysed through a sociolinguistic framework to identify the forms, meanings, and factors contributing to the popularity of these expressions. The analysis process involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that political jargon in this election includes words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, with morphological techniques like reduplication and affixation making the expressions memorable and relatable. These jargons carry denotative, connotative, and associative meanings, reflecting social and political values and enhancing political communication. This language use aids voters' understanding and boosts public engagement in discourse. This research shows that political jargon serves as a communication tool to shape group identity and reinforce candidate narratives, providing insights into the intersections of language, politics, and culture in contemporary democracy.
