Abstract

Information on macrofauna community from mangrove areas in Indonesia is still scarce. The objective of this research were study the abundance and community structure of macrofauna in mangrove area of Tanjung Leban and Bukit Batu Villages, Bengkalis Region, Riau Province. Macrofauna were sampled in September 2014 using corer from 10 plot located in mangrove areas of Tanjung Leban and Bukit Batu Villages. Each plot were sampled three times as a replication. The macrofauna which were collected were classified to Nematoda, Gastropoda, Copepoda, Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Tardigrada, Insecta, Holothuroidea, Ostracoda and Syncarida. The average of macrofaunal abundance was 1435 ind./m2 with Nematoda, Gastropoda, and Copepoda as the most dominant taxa. Analysis of ANOVA indicated that the abundance of macrofauna between the plot inside each mangrove area were not statistically different (Tanjung Leban F = 0,96, Bukit batu F = 0,86). Additionally, the Student’s t test indicated that the abundance of macrofauna between mangrove area in Tanjung Leban and Bukit Batu were not statistically different (t = 1,92).

Abstract

Settlement pests are animals around humans and their settlements that cause physical and psychological disturbances to residents of the house. Its existence causes harm, loss and disturbance. Pests that are often a problem at home are mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches, and flies. Very few people tolerate the presence of pests in the house, even the only signs of their presence have led people to take control measures with pesticides. This research is a descriptive research that is to explain, detail and make a description of a symptom or object under study. The target population is households residing in Pekanbaru City, namely in the Districts of Tenayan Raya, Sail and Pekanbaru Kota. The sample was determined purposively with a multistage sampling technique. The research area is residential in Pekanbaru City with three categories of clean, medium and dirty. The data obtained were nominal, ordinal and ratio analysis. The relationship between data and quantitative data was analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed that more than half of the respondents (95.88%) stated that there were residential pests in their houses. The most mosquitoes were found and felt by the residents of the house the most disturbing, so that the mosquitoes were the most controlled. As many as 41.44% of respondents thought that disturbance from pests was causing discomfort. In addition, people are very worried about contracting diseases carried by pests, especially dengue fever.

Abstract

Burrowing fauna inhabiting the intertidal flats, such as certain crabs and mudskippers, are  biotic  component of intertidal ecosystem with a crucial ecological role. Their burrowing activity increases the porosity of intertidal substrates that promotes oxygenation, sediment dynamics, nutrient transport, and carbon storage. These positive contributions could however be disrupted by the degradation of their habitats as may be induced by coastal erosion. In the case of Bengkalis Island in Riau Province, Indonesia, coastal peatland erosion has generated a huge amount of peat debris that is eventually deposited on intertidal flats.  The present study has been conducted to explore burrowing crabs and mudskippers inhabiting the island’s intertidal flats most likely impacted by the deposition of peat debris. Two transect line, between the highest and the lowest tide, were made in two locations (Perepat Tunggal and Selat Baru). Observation were conducted along the transect line at interval of 5 m. Our inventory in two study locations, Perepat Tunggal and Selat Baru, has confirmed the presence of at least seven species of fiddler crabs (Austruca annulipes, Gelasimus vocans, Tubuca Bellator, T. coarctata, T. forcipata, T. paradussmieri, and T. rosea), one species of soldier crab (Dotilla myctiroides), and five species of mudskippers (Periopthalmodon schlosseri, Periophthalmus argentilineatus, P. chrysospilos, P. gracilis, P. variabilis. Our presentation shares the results in details and discusses how the disturbances induced by coastal peatland erosion might affect such fauna. Keywords: fiddler crabs, soldier crabs, mudskippers, peat debris deposition

Abstract

Meliponiculture emerged at Tanjung Sari, a village in Kepulauan Meranti Regency, Riau Province, in 2016 and has been growing thereafter. According to our observations there were at least three main obstacles faced by colony owners at this village, i.e. colony loss, low honey production, and marketing-related issues. We attempted to address these issues through a participatory program involving colony owners of the village. Colony loss had been mainly caused by swarming and mortality and was believed to have been triggered by inappropriate conditions of the maintenance (such as too much exposure to the sun and rain as well as unrepelled diturbances by other animals. Such conditions had also been associated with low honey production. Therefore we encouraged villagers to improve the conditions by providing supporter and roof for their colonies. In regard with marketing issues, we encouraged villagers to establish a honey cooperative under BUMDES, which should regulate honey price, absorb the produced honey, and also handle its marketing to outer counterparts. In addition, the cooperative should facilitate communications between members and information disemination, and mediate negotiation with potential buyers. The benefits gained by participants were: (1) the improvement of technical knowledge of colony maintenance; (2) the improvement of colony maintenance quality that would reduce risk of colony loss; and (3) the establishment of a cooperative that would be a body that would facilitate the necessities previously mentioned. The present paper describes the processes and results in details.

Abstract

Friendly peatland utilization is often regarded as ‘difficult’, ‘adding new cost,” and ‘unfavorable’ to the cultivated crops. Such views appear to restrain farmers in general to adopt friendlier methods in utilizing peatlands. In response to the call for improving their practices farmers often demand proven peat-friendly but profittable practices. Therefore, convincing evidences, such as successful farmers with such practices as models, are needed. In one of villages in Siak regency, Riau Province, we encountered a farmer figure that is potentially promoted as a model in this regard. However, after evaluating what he really practiced, we found that some improvements were needed to make his practices truly peat friendlier. Our paper concerns the results of our interactions with this figure in order to improve the: (a) control of groundwater level; (b) prevention of peat decomposition; (c) prevention of peat subsidence; (d) reduction of carbon emission; (e) diversification of the farm’s products; (f) aesthetic value of the farm; and (g) promotion to potential visitors and market the farm’s products.

Abstract

Community engagement is often abruptly terminated as a project has to be officially ended following the termination of the fiscal year, which often leads to direct contact break off between project executors and their local counterparts. Consequently, a project initiated in the previous year may not persist in the following years. One strategy to cope with this problem is to use long-distance communication via handphone (HP) to continue the engagement of local counterparts. Our paper shares our experience as counterpart of Badan Restorasi Gambut (BRG) in engaging local communities carrying out peatland revegation in Bengkalis, Siak, and Kepulauan Meranti Regency of Riau. Revegetation was implemented as production and planting of natural forest tree seedlings. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of using long-distance communication for continuing our engagement in peatland revegetation. In our communications, technical and non-technical constraints of revegetation as well as the perceptions and expectations of our counterparts were discussed. We concluded, long-distance communication helps maintain “bonding” between project executors and their local counterparts, so that they do not feel left alone after a project has been formally terminated. Nevertheless, long-distance communication that is not accompanied with a real financial support to cover costs, eventually will not be sufficient.
