Abstract

Physical fitness is a measure of health status as a basic physical condition of someone to perform daily activity. In this study, measurement pf physical fitness component consisted of cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, muscular flexibility, and muscular strength. The purpose of this study is to know whether there is correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement. This study used observational analytical method with cross-sectional design. Data were collected by total sampling method, and there were eighty-two students from Cikeruh 2 Elementary School in Jatinangor from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Physical fitness assessment in this study consisted of step test, body mass index (BMI), push-up, and sit-up. Academic achievement data was collected from final examination result. Most students (74,49%) has enough physical fitness. There is no significant correlation between physical fitness and academic achievement. Thus, based on this study, it was expected to conduct further study about other factors which affects the academic achievement.

Abstract

Tahajud is qiyammul lail or sunnah muakad in Islam, which is both spiritual and physical practice that integrating mind and body. Tahajud regularly has been showed the improvement of neuropsychoendocrinology sistem, relaxing muscle of breathing, and might be influencing cardiovasculae function. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of tahajud on blood pressure, pulse rate, and lung volume. Observational analytic study with cross-sectional design was conducted from June – October 2013, using direct measurement to compare calues of blood pressure, pulse rate, and lung volume (forced volume capacity – FVC and forced expiratory volume in 1 second) between tahajud and non-tahajud prayers. Fourty two male students at Bina Siswa SMA Plus Cisarua, Lembang included in this study as volunteer subjects after informed consent. The result are the mean difference for pulse rate (-2,29 ± 8,69 vs 5,38 ± 0,27; p=0,001), forced volume capacity (-0,04 ± 0,27 vs 0,37 ± 0,27; p=0,012), systolic blood pressure (-2(-22,30) vs 0(-20,30); p=0,64), diastolic blood pressure (0(-20,20) vs 0(-20,20); p=0,22), and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (2,64 ± 0,64 vs 2,23 ± 0,38; p=0,22). This study concluded that tahajud regularly provided improvement in value of cardiopulmonary system especially in pulse rate and FVC.

Abstract

A research has been done to compare the differences on the enzyme creatine phosphokinase (CPK) level and muscle soreness before and after 4-weeks swim practices on swimmers of College swimming club. Eighteen healthy male swimmers (mean ± SD; age: 19,94 ± 1,86 years; weight: 65,28 ± 6,14 kg; height: 1,72 ± 0,43 m) participated in this study. All subjects performed their 4-weeks swim practices which consist of 2x120 hours per week with 500 meters average daily swim distance and weight training. Blood was collected before and after the practices and CPK were analyzed. Questionnaires concerning muscle soreness were filled put before each blood draw. Results were analyzed using normality test and Wilcoxon signed rank test (p<0.05). There was significant increase in CPK level during 4-weeks swim practices by 59.41% (p=0.044). Whereas for muscle soreness (overall and specifically in arms and thighs), there was no significant differences between before and after the 4-weeks swim practices. As a conclusion, participation in 4-weeks swim practices resulted in significant serum CPK enzyme elevation, but there was lack of significance in muscle soreness differences on swimmers of College swimming club.

Abstract

Workers of PT. Grandtex is divided into three different divisions; nonproduction division, weaving division, and spinning division. These workers have different activities, job processes, and work environments, especially in the cotton dust exposure rate. Exposure to cotton dust can influence physical working capacity. This study aimed to find out physical working capacity differences between workers of nonproduction division, weaving division, and spinning division. A comparative analytic survey study is conducted on 112 subjects, which consists of 32 nonproduction division workers, 40 weaving division workers, and 40 spinning division workers. Subjects are picked by the stratified random sampling method. Physical working capacity measured by using an anaerobic capacity parameter (V̇O2 max)with the Astrand-Rhyming chair test. The homogeneity of the result is tested by the Levene test and the normality is tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov. To find out the differences, those data are analyzed by one-way ANOVA test (p<0,05) and followed by Duncan test to measure how big the differences are. The result of data analyzed with ANOVA indicated that there is a significant difference in physical working capacity (V̇O2 max)(p=0,000) among workers of nonproduction, weaving, and spinning division. This result was also followed by Duncan’s test suggesting thatthe physical working capacity (V̇O2 max) of nonproduction workers are bigger than weaving production workers and also bigger than spinning workers (35,78 ± 7,27 vs 31,50 ± 7,59 vs 28,03 ± 5,92 ml/kg BW/minute). From this study, we can conclude that the physical working capacity (V̇O2 max) of nonproduction workers is better than weaving and spinning division workers.

Abstract

Near work activity was estimates as risk factor of refractive error. This study aimed to analyze the association between near work activity and visucal acuity in junior high school students in Jatinangor. This study used cross-sectional method. Total of 147 subjects were screened for visual impairment and assessed for near work activities. Result showed total diopter-hours and time spent for each near work activity was less in group with visual acuity ≥ 6/18 than < 6/18 with no significant difference, except for playing games (p=0.018). In conclusion, near work activity does not have impact on visual acuity, except for playing games.
