Abstract

Fifteen year-old teak wood samples planted in Ciamis FMU (Perhutani Enterprise) were evaluated for their chemical properties. Three seed sources such as conventional seed, clone, and superior wood and radial positions namely sapwood, outer heartwood, and inner heartwood were the observed factors. The specimens were taken from the bottom parts of their sources. Completely randomized design was used. Cell wall components were analyzed by various gravimetric methods.Analysis of variance and Duncan’s test were performed for data analysis. The results showed that no significant difference in the quantity of cell wall components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), extractives (ethanol-toluene and hot-water solubles), ash, and silica content among the seed sources. Superior teakwood or Jati Plus Perhutani, which has the highest growth rate (2.1~3.6 cm/year) among others, showed a comparative higher average pH values (7.08~7.38) and solubility in 1% NaOH (17.22~17.83%) than other sources. Radial factors significantly affected ethanol-toluene extractive and lignin content. The ethanol-toluene extractive had the highest content (9.30~11.54%) at the outer part of heartwood while lignin content was the lowest (28.12~30.10%) in the inner part. The result indicated some good characteristics of young teak trees compared to the mature ones in relation to wood processing.

Abstract

Evaluation of the teak clone test aims to determine the growth and genetic parameters of the clones at the age of 20 years. Teak clone test was established in 1999 with a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The number of clones used was 65 clones, five replications (blocks), four treeplots, with a spacing of 3m x 3m. Measurements were carried out on the growth characteristics (i.e., plant height and diameter at breast height / DBH) and wood quality (i.e., Pilodyn penetration stress-wave velocity / SWV). The results of the analysis of variance showed that there were very significant differences in all observed growth characteristics. Heritability for plant height, stem diameter, Pilodyn penetration, and SWV were 0.38, 0.51, 0.59, 0.29, and 0.53, respectively. The expected genetic gains for volume and SWV were 21.81% and 2.11%, respectively, by selecting the best seven clones. The correlation between growth characteristics and between wood quality with growth characteristic is positive, indicating that improvement in productivity is followed by wood quality. The best clones based on clone values of stem diameter and SWV characteristics are clones number 110, 24, 97, 108, 20, 35, and 31, respectively.

Abstract

Red jabon is one of the fast growing species. It is growth well in tropical countries. It has a potential to fulfill the demand of wood. Tree imrovement program of this species has been done in Indonesia. However, information of wood properties related to tree improvement program of red jabon is limited. Therefore, wood properties such as physical and mechanical properties of this species at the progeny trial were needed to clarify. The aims of this research were to clarify the variation of physical and mechanical properties of red jabon from 5 families at5-year-old planted in Wonogiri, Central Java and relationship between air-dry density and mechanical properties. As the result, physical and mechanical properties were varied among 5 families. Based on the results, famili number 85 performed good result of physical and mechanical characteristics, eventhough the physical properties were not highest among 5 families but it was abouf the average value. Furthermore, this family showed the best values of all mechanichal characteristics tested. In addition, air-dry density has highly positive significantcorrelation with mechanical properties (static bending strength and compressive strength parallel to grain), suggesting that mechanical properties can be predicted by air-dried density.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate drying defect characteristics, to develop proper drying schedule, and to analyze the relationship between the developed drying schedule and its wood properties. This study used superior and conventional teak wood of ten years-old planted in Blora, Central Java. Sample from different axial positions (bottom and middle part) and different board thicknesses (20 mm and 40 mm) were taken. Drying schedule was developed in accordance to Terazawa method, which dried the sample for 72 h at a temperature of 100 °C. Initial moisture content, crack, collapse, and honeycombing were observed to determine the proper drying schedule. The developed drying schedule then was related to their characteristics, such origin of the seedling, thickness, density, and heartwood percentage. The proper scheduled was also applied in larger sample and evaluated. The results showed that there were five variations of drying schedule for superior and conventional teak wood. Chi square analysis indicated that the board thickness affect significantly on developing drying schedules. Boards with a thickness of 20 mm can be dried with an initial temperature of 70 °C, the wet bulb depression 7°C, and the final temperature of 105°C. Further, boards with a thickness of 40 mm should be dried with a softer drying schedule with an initial temperature of 60°C, wet bulb depression temperature of 4 °C, and the final temperature of 85°C. Application of the selected drying schedule was succeed without any significant defects. Abstract

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Superior “Mega”  and Conventional Teak Wood Planted in Wanagama Educational Forest, Gunungkidul, YogyakartaAbstractDemand of teak wood increases every year along the increase of human population and prosperity. On the other hand, teak is one of the long rotation tree species. Furthermore, the avaibility of teak from the Perum Perhutani as the biggest teak plantation company is not enough to fulfill the demand of teak wood from wood industry. Therefore, many efforts have been conducted to solve this problem, such as by tree breeding program. In Indonesia, this program only focused in the growth characteristics. However, information of wood properties of superior teak is still limited in Indonesia. Therefore, the aim of this research was to clarify the physical and mechanical characteristics of superior teak wood (11-year-old) and compared with the conventional teak (14-year-old) planted in Wanagama Forest, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta and its longitudinal variation. As the results, physical properties were not significantly different between superior teak and conventional teak, except for green moisture content. Bending strength (MOR dan MOE) and compression strength parallel to grain were significantly different between superior and conventional teak. In addition, compressive strength perpendicular to grain was not significantly different between superior and conventional teak.

Abstract

Effect of Growth Rate on Physical and Mechanical Properties of 4-year-old Acacia mangium Wood from Wonogiri, Central JavaAbstractIncreasing solid wood demand provides an opportunity to fast-growing wood species such as Acacia mangium as semi construction and construction materials. In general, the quality of wood is affected by growth characteristics such as radial growth rate. The study about effect of growth rate on the properties of mangium wood is limited in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the physical and mechanical properties of mangium wood at different growth rates. Furthermore, relationship between basic density and other properties was clarified. The nine mangium trees of 4-year-old used in this study were planted in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java. Basic density, shrinkage, T/R ratio, static bending strength (MOE and MOR), compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to grain were determined. The results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. As a result, the physical and mechanical properties of the woods showed no significant difference in three different categories of growth rates, except for radial shrinkage. Furthermore, the basic density is positively significant correlated with radial and tangential shrinkage and also compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to grain. Based on these results, it is suggesting that basic density is a good indicator for predicting physical and mechanical properties of mangium wood.

Abstract

This study aims to determinethe physical properties and mechanical properties at axial (base, middle, and top) and radial (near the pith, middle, and near the bark) positions, as well as the relationship between the specific gravity and mechanical properties of Acacia aulacocarpa wood. Three 27-year-old trees planted at KHDTK Wanagama wereused. Wood physical and mechanical propertieswere tested per British Standard 373:1957. The statistical analysis used was a two-way ANOVA and a follow-up test of Tukey HSD. The results showed that the average moisture content was 98.95%; the green and air-dry sepesific gravity were 0.58 and 0.61. Radial, tangential, and longitudinal shrinkage from green to oven-dry conditions (total shrinkage) were 2.02%, 5.09%, and 0.33%. The tangential/radial (T/R) ratio was 2.80%. The static bending strength of stress at proportion limit, MoE, and MoR were 498.13 kg/cm2, 116.16x1000 kg/cm2, and 1043.68 kg/cm2, respectively. The compressive strength parallel to the grain and perpendicular to the grain were 596.05 kg/cm2 and 227.25 kg/cm2, respectively. The results of the variance analysis showed that the radial position factor has a significant effect on green moisture content, green and air-dry specificgravity, total radial shrinkage, T/R ratio, static bending strength at stress of proportion limit, MoE, MoR, compressive strength parallel to the grain, and compressive strength perpendicular to the grain. However, the axial position factor did not show any significant differences in the physical and mechanical properties of the wood. Furthermore, air-dry specific gravity has a significant moderate to high positive correlation with all mechanical properties.
