Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common reproductive health problem among adolescents that negatively affects academic activities, social participation, and quality of life. Non-pharmacological interventions are increasingly used as alternative or complementary approaches for menstrual pain management. Objective: To critically review the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in managing dysmenorrhea among adolescents. Methods: This study employed a critical literature review with a systematic search approach guided by PRISMA principles across PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases from 2021–2025. Articles were selected using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed through narrative synthesis. Results: A total of 15 studies were included. Heat therapy, exercise, and yoga demonstrated the most consistent evidence in reducing dysmenorrhea pain, while relaxation, aromatherapy, music therapy, and herbal interventions provided additional benefits. Conclusion: Non-pharmacological interventions are effective in managing adolescent dysmenorrhea; however, standardized protocols and higher-quality studies remain necessary.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women is a public health problem that increases the risk of low birth weight, prematurity, and maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In Ciamis Regency, the prevalence of CED among pregnant women has shown an increasing trend. Sukamulya Village was selected as the study setting due to the continued occurrence of CED cases despite the availability of basic maternal health services, indicating the need for a community-based assessment. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of pregnant women with CED in Sukamulya Village, Ciamis Regency. This study employed a descriptive survey design. The study population consisted of all pregnant women with CED in Sukamulya Village, totaling 25 respondents, using total sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed descriptively using frequency and percentage distributions. Most respondents had primary school education (36%), were aged 20–35 years (44%), were primigravida (64%), and were unemployed (56%). Pregnant women with CED in Sukamulya Village were generally within the healthy reproductive age range but were predominantly characterized by low educational level, primigravida status, and unemployment. These findings provide practical implications for health workers, particularly midwives, to strengthen nutritional education, improve early antenatal care services, and optimize targeted and sustainable supplementary feeding programs.

Abstract

Introduction: The stunting rate in West Java Province is higher than the national average and the highest of the 14 existing regions. Ciamis Regency, particularly Sindangkasih District, is among the highest (Health Office, West Java Province 2021). The process of stunting has been lasting since the pregnancy and it gets worse if it cannot be treated (catch-up growth) within the first 1000 days of life (1000 HPK). Low family awareness of nutrition will have an impact on the health and nutritional status of toddlers. Based on the research result related to stunting, knowledge-raising intervention for health cadres related to nutrition is very effective in increasing the practice of mentoring mothers of under-five toddlers. Therefore, it is necessary to increase cadres’ knowledge and understanding of locus stunting through nutrition training strategies and home plant cultivation as a preventive measure for the nutritional adequacy of under-five toddlers in 1000 HPK. Community service activities aim to realize community empowerment to use local food as the basis for sustainable home food. The targets in this community service are cadres and mothers of under-five toddlers. Objective: The purpose of this service was realize community empowerment to use local food as the basis for sustainable home food Method: The method of this community service uses nutrition training to increase the knowledge, capacity, and ability of village cadres and mothers of under-five toddlers regarding food diversification which is nutritious, balanced, and safe to consume as home plants. At the beginning of the activity, a pretest was carried out followed by the delivery of material, cooking demonstrations, and a post-test. Result: The results showed that there was a significant increase in mothers’ knowledge of under-five toddlers and cadres about the importance of nutrition in 1000 HPK. Conclusion: Nutrition training is a promotive activity, a basis for implementing other nutrition intervention programs, and a basis for a person's behavior.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women remains a contributing factor to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. The limited utilization of locally available nutrient-dense foods and the low capacity of community cadres to develop alternative high-protein supplementary foods (PMT) exacerbate this issue. Strengthening cadre competency in processing affordable and culturally appropriate local food sources is essential to support maternal nutritional improvement programs. Objective: The purpose of this service was to enhance the skills and knowledge of community health cadres in processing locally sourced supplementary foods (PMT) for pregnant women with CED, thereby increasing community-based nutritional resilience. Method: This public service was conducted by implementing a participatory training model involving demonstration, mentoring, and hands-on practice. Cadres were trained to process high-protein local food ingredients—especially fish and plant-based sources—into practical PMT products appropriate for pregnant women with CED. Pre–post assessments were used to measure cadre skill improvement, complemented by direct observation and documentation. Result: The service showed significant improvement in cadre competence related to selecting high-quality local food ingredients, applying hygienic food processing techniques, and producing high-protein PMT suitable for pregnant women with CED. Cadres successfully formulated several PMT variants such as shredded fish (abon lele), and fish nuggets. Post-intervention evaluation indicated increased cadre confidence, improved product safety, and greater readiness to support maternal nutrition programs at Posyandu. Additionally, cadres demonstrated improved understanding of balanced nutrition principles for pregnancy and the importance of local food optimization, with an average increase in knowledge of 32.3%. Conclusion: The mentoring program effectively strengthened cadre capacity in processing supplementary foods for pregnant women with CED using local food sources. This intervention contributes to improved community preparedness in addressing maternal nutrition problems and supports sustainable implementation of food-based solutions at the community level.

Abstract

Introduction: Breast milk production plays a crucial role in supporting infant growth and immunity. One of the efforts to improve breast milk production is by optimizing the nutritional intake of breastfeeding mothers through the utilization of local food sources. Kepok banana heart (Musa paradisiaca) contains essential nutrients and natural lactagogue compounds that have the potential to stimulate prolactin and oxytocin hormones. This community service program introduces the innovation of chicken nuggets combined with kepok banana heart as an alternative nutritious local food product for breastfeeding mothers. Objective: The purpose of this community service was to empower breastfeeding mothers and health cadres through training on processing kepok banana heart into an innovative food product and to improve their knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding local food utilization to support breast milk production. Method: This public service activity was conducted through several stages, including initial surveys, socialization, nutrition education, demonstration of processing techniques, hands-on practice, and evaluation. A total of 30 participants consisting of breastfeeding mothers and cadres took part in the program. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Result: The training resulted in a significant improvement in participants’ abilities. Knowledge increased by 41.25% (p < 0.001), skills increased by 26.06% (p < 0.01), and attitudes increased by 13.06% (p = 0.018). Participants were able to independently process kepok banana heart into chicken nugget products and demonstrated positive interest in adopting local food innovations. The program also initiated the formation of a nutrition education group and prepared several academic outputs such as modules, HKI drafts, and documentation. Conclusion: The community empowerment program effectively enhanced participants’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes in utilizing local food ingredients, particularly kepok banana heart, as a nutritious innovation to support breast milk production. The activity shows strong potential for sustainability and can be replicated in other communities to promote food-based interventions for maternal and child health.
