Abstract

Since English has become an international language for communication, many people have used English to support their life goals. Someone who speaks foreign language including English must know the vocabulary of the language in order to be able to communicate properly. The use of the media in the process of teaching and learning English will attract students to study the language. One of the interesting media that can help students learn vocabulary is film or movie. It also offers information about an object and makes the classroom situation clear. This study is aimed to investigate students’ perception towards using movies to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study was conducted at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, Bandar Lampung. The main instruments used in the data collection were questionnaire and interview. The findings of the study indicate that students have positive perception towards the use of movies in their classes to improve their vocabulary mastery. Therefore, it can help them in improving their vocabulary acquisition in which in the end they will use it in their conversation or writing when they are using their English.

Abstract

One effort that teachers can do to improve their learning process is by developing learning resources for themselves and their students. Teachers can use student workbook (LKS) to be used as a source of learning for students. A student workbook that contains material summaries can help students more effectively understand the materials. Student workbook containing a variety of practice questions is believed to affect the effectiveness of student’s learning. This research aims to analyze the effects of using student workbook (LKS) towards the effectiveness of students’ learning. This research was conducted to see students' perceptions of the role of using student workbook (LKS) towards the effectiveness of student learning. To collect data, this study used a questionnaire distributed to 24 students using a survey administration application, consisting of six questions related to the students' perceptions of the role of using student workbook (LKS) towards student’s learning process. After all, participants had completed the questionnaire, the data were then categorized based on relevant findings. The findings reveal that the use of student workbook gives beneficial impact on students’ learning since it can be one of the sources of learning besides the teacher’s explanation. It also makes students easier in understanding the materials with simple content and various practices. In the end, this research hopefully can be useful as a reference or guide for future researchers who want to conduct similar research on the use of student workbook (LKS) as one of the resources in the teaching process.

Abstract

The research aims to find out students’ perceptions toward using Facebook to practice their writing skill. The sample of this study consisted of 20 participants of English major students. The main instrument used in this research was questionnaire which consisted of two sections. The first section was about the students’ general performance on Facebook and its influences. The second was about the influence of Facebook on students’ writing skill. The semi-structured interview was also conducted to support the validity of the data. The result shows that students think that by using Facebook, students can practice their writing by creating English caption and also writing comment on English fan page. Besides that, students can also improve their vocabulary by reading to the captions on the Facebook. Students also can have more idea to write by reading the topic discussed in this social media. It can be concluded that students give positive thought of using Facebook to practice their writing skill.

Abstract

Many EFL students are still having difficulties in learning vocabulary. It is because most of English vocabulary are different in term of written and spoken. To face this facts, EFL students have their way to learn and add their new English words There are many ways to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. One of the ways is through English songs. This research aims to find out students’ thought on their vocabulary mastery using English songs. The researcher used descriptive qualitative study as the research design. The subjects of this research were the 30 students from English Education study program of Faculty of Arts and Education in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. From the result of the questionnaire and the interview, it revealed that English songs have strong influence on their English skill. Also, the students think that English songs help them learn new vocabulary, unfamiliar vocabulary, how to pronounce the word correctly. Thus, finally, they can improve their English vocabulary.

Abstract

English has been an important language nowadays. The role of the English language also has become the qualification of many people. However, many students state that English is not an easy language to master especially in Indonesia. Teachers also find it as a challenge in teaching English in Indonesia. They must have the appropriate technique and media for the students. One of the media that can be used by teachers to teach and engage students’ participation in learning English is WhatsApp. This application is also popular among the students as instructional learning mobile medium, including as a teaching medium to teach writing for students. Besides it is easy to operate, many students are familiar with it. This research aimed to find out students’ perspectives towards the use of WhatsApp group in improving students’ writing ability. This study applied a descriptive qualitative study with 37 students of the English Education study program as the participants. The data instrument used in this research were questionnaire and interview. The findings show that teaching writing by using the WhatsApp group can bring positive effects and benefit during the teaching and learning process. Besides that, it can also develop students’ writing ability. This result is supported by students’ opinions which state many good responses to this media rather than bad responses. Moreover, the result also shows that the WhatsApp group is one of the appropriate learning platforms for education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Many instructors and students have used digital comic to enhance their English skills. This research aims to analyze students' perspectives on using digital comic in learning writing skill at the senior high school level. This research employed a qualitative design to gain the data through a questionnaire instrument. The sample of this research was the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Padang Cermin, and 20 students participated in this research. Based on the data result of this study, students had positive feedback toward the use of digital comic to help them develop their multiple English skills and help the students enjoy and increase their interest, especially in learning writing skill of the English language through creating a short English story. As conclusion, the result proved that the use of digital comic could give positive effects on students’ writing skill in eleventh grade. It is also suggested that teachers can apply this learning medium to help them teach writing skill for their students at school.

Abstract

Speaking is an essential skill that students should master because it requires oral communication such as, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. This study aims to determine the correlation between speaking class anxiety and their English skills. The participants in this study were sixth semester students majoring in English Education, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia which consisted of 39 students. This research technique uses quantitative research. The research instrument was that students were asked to fill out a questionnaire about speaking anxiety which was distributed via a google form link and then the data would be analyzed with the help of SPSS 15.0 and Ms Excel 2007. The questionnaire was adopted from the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCA). The questionnaire contains 20 questions related to anxiety problems in speaking class with 5 scale criteria starting from strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree. From the result of the correlation between speaking anxiety and English proficiency scores, it can be concluded that students with high level of speaking anxiety had lower EPT scores than student with lower speaking anxiety level.

Abstract

One of the problems and inhibitions of students’ learning development is anxiety. Students’ in Indonesia learn online from home in an effort to limit social restrictions during the pandemic covid-19. From this online learning, there is also anxiety felt by students’. The purpose of this study is to find out what are the anxieties felt by students’ in online learning during this pandemic that have an correlation with their last GPA score and EPT (English proficiency test) score. This research was designed using quantitative correlational study with independent variables. The data of this study was taken from English Education Students’ of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia and the sample obtained in this study was 39 students’ who take Quantitative Research class. The instruments used in collecting the data are questionnaire and the last GPA EPT score. Statistical analysis of Pearson product-moment correlation and SPSS software  was used to find the correlation between the variables. The result of this study showed that there were negative correlation between anxiety and students’ GPA and EPT scores. The correlation was 0.925, and the t-table was lower than the T-test. As a result, it is entirely possible to conclude that anxiety has a statistically significant impact on student achievement.
