Abstract

This study analyzed students’ perception of online learning in three universities in Aceh, IAIN Takengon, Malikussaleh University, and Samudera University. It studied how they perceived the application of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. In analyzing their perception, researchers considered three aspects of perception; learning process, learning environment, and learning motivation. To gather the data and information, researchers designed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 16 items to the respondents online using Google Form. In addition, a discussion in the form of FGD with respondents was conducted in each site to gain a more comprehensive insight on the subject. A total of 449 respondents from three universities participated in the questionnaires. Researchers utilized purposive random sampling under the criteria of active students who have experienced online learning on campus. Some students who have responded to the questionnaires were then invited for FGD in each of the universities. Researchers utilized SPSS software to analyze the data and present the phenomenon and general findings to be elaborated in the study. The results of the study uncovered that students have a negative attitude towards online learning in the learning process, learning environment, and learning motivation. However, the learning process has a positive correlation with both the learning environment and learning motivation.

Abstract

This paper discusses possible advantages of having Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) to teach English as a Foreign-Language (EFL) especially in Asian countries when they are often regarded as inferior to their Native English-Speaking Teachers (NESTs) counterparts. A native speaker fallacy has emphasized that NESTs are better teachers of EFL and have put NNESTs at a disadvantage. Actually, NNESTs possess advantages that can make them better teachers for teaching English in an EFL/ESL setting connected with their own EFL learning experiences and with sharing the same first language and cultural background with their students. While considered to have lower English language proficiency and lower self-confidence compared to NESTs, NNESTs who have made the effort to become quality teachers can position themselves as ideal English teachers in their own environment.

Abstract

In communicating, the use of local languages tends to be influenced by the gender of the speakers. This includes politeness, vocabulary selection, grammar, and context. The urban community is most potentially affected by modernization which also influences the use of local languages. This study looks at the differences in the use of local languages and the causes of these differences based on the gender of the speakers. This study used a qualitative descriptive method using data collection techniques consisting of observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). This research was conducted with the subject of urban communities living in the city of Takengon. The results of this study show that urban women and men use local language differently, especially in terms of their preference in using local language. Urban women tend to be affected by the feeling of wanting to be associated with being modern, while urban men are more affected by the context in which they interact. These results are hoped to add to the literature on the use of local languages that can contribute to language maintenance efforts.

Abstract

Abstract

Smart cities with GPS track and trace implementation have great potential to achieve good and clean governance. This technology enables the government to gather and analyse real-time data concerning mobility, public assets, and the allocation of funds. With precise and transparent information, the government can enhance efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of the public. The primary goals of this application are to promote transparency, improve the management of community activities, and encourage community engagement. The approach employed in the creation and development of this smart city application follows the waterfall method. This methodology simplifies the system's initial development and its potential for future enhancements. The results from implementing and testing the smart city system, utilizing usability testing, yield scores exceeding 3, specifically 3.56. This indicates that both government officials and the community find the system and application highly user-friendly

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of Generation Z's lives, raising questions about its impact on their social English skills. Through a systematic literature review, we aim to reveal the impact of social media use on Generation Z's social English. Research findings show that social media has a mixed impact on Generation Z's social English skills. This can be both beneficial and detrimental. On the positive side, it helps grow social English through engagement with influencers and content. On the negative side, issues such as information overload, FOMO, imitation of inappropriate content, and mental health problems can harm social English skills. Additionally, it influences communication styles through the widespread use of emojis, acronyms and emoticons. This must be balanced with proficiency in formal social English for effective communication.
