Abstract

Aceh has great talents and prodigy who need intervention. Talking about these talents should start with understanding them as a whole, who they really are, how can we identify them, how can we best serve them for their best potential growth.  Designing the programs that best suit them become the next step after carefully selecting them. Later, we need to formulate special programs, special schools, special human resource who will work with them to boost these prodigies’ abilities. Failing to do so will only result in undermining and downgrading their ability instead of doing them a favor. It is highly recommended that government start tapping into this as early as possible for maximum result. In this short article, I also present on how government should work with these talents and prodigies by carefully selecting them. Selection process will later base the whole programs and determine its success. Different approach and interventions are presented here as option and ways to be taken and considered for best result possible.  These approaches are not the only solution to be considered. There should be more out there that government should also consider. Last aspect, but not least, is developing human resources who will teach them. Teachers must be carefully selected and trained so that they can understand and are able to pace up and formulate the curriculum that best serve their students’ need.

Abstract

Students leave their countries to pursue tertiary education abroad under different motives. To understand this case, this study aimed to identify the prospective students’ perceptions on overseas academic settings. A total of 100 Acehnese students applying for overseas scholarship were surveyed. The obtained data were then processed using SPSS 24.0 for descriptive quantitative elaboration. The findings indicated that both females and males shared relatively similar views on the quality of international tertiary education. Both positively consider overseas universities to have better learning quality, better learning environment and better research experience. It is suggested that prospective students equip themselves with good English language competence to increase their chance to study abroad.

Abstract

This study analyzed students’ perception of online learning in three universities in Aceh, IAIN Takengon, Malikussaleh University, and Samudera University. It studied how they perceived the application of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. In analyzing their perception, researchers considered three aspects of perception; learning process, learning environment, and learning motivation. To gather the data and information, researchers designed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 16 items to the respondents online using Google Form. In addition, a discussion in the form of FGD with respondents was conducted in each site to gain a more comprehensive insight on the subject. A total of 449 respondents from three universities participated in the questionnaires. Researchers utilized purposive random sampling under the criteria of active students who have experienced online learning on campus. Some students who have responded to the questionnaires were then invited for FGD in each of the universities. Researchers utilized SPSS software to analyze the data and present the phenomenon and general findings to be elaborated in the study. The results of the study uncovered that students have a negative attitude towards online learning in the learning process, learning environment, and learning motivation. However, the learning process has a positive correlation with both the learning environment and learning motivation.

This research aims to describe the occurrence of language shift in Singkil among children in Danau Bungara Village, Kota Baharu Sub-district, Aceh Singkil Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method conducted to provide an actual description of the occurrence of language shift in Singkil among children in Danau Bungara Village. The data collection techniques used in this study are observation and interviews. The data analysis used includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This research focuses on three domains: the family domain, the environment domain, the school domain, and the factors that cause the language shift. Based on research findings, it shows that in the family domain, the majority of children use Bahasa Indonesia when interacting with family members such as parents, siblings, and other relatives. In the children's environment, they predominantly use Bahasa Indonesia rather than Singkil, whether they are playing with peers or communicating with those around them. In the school domain, children use Bahasa Indonesia overall. These findings prove that there has been a language shift from Singkil in the family, environment, and school domains. The factors causing the shift from Singkil include school or educational factors, family habits, environmental factors, and parental or children's attitudes towards the Singkil language.

Abstract

Language anxiety is a prevalent issue among English language learners (ELLs) and continues to negatively affect their language learning and performance. This study investigated key factors contributing to language anxiety and examined its influence on learners’ fluency and overall English proficiency. The study explored how anxiety manifests in learners and the strategies used to reduce its effects in the classroom. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, the study was conducted at a university in Indonesia. The population consisted of 138 civil engineering students from four classes, of whom 66 were randomly selected as participants. In addition, four ELT lecturers who teach English on campus participated in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews consisting of 15 guiding questions and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that learners experienced heightened anxiety when they were required to speak in front of the class and when anticipating errors. Pronunciation difficulties, fear of peer judgment, and low self-efficacy were identified as the major contributing factors. Anxiety was found to significantly hinder fluency, manifesting in cognitive disruption, slow speech production, and loss of confidence, which often led learners to rely on memorization rather than spontaneous responses. To address these challenges, English language teachers implemented strategies such as pair work, small-group discussions, and positive reinforcement. These practices contributed to a more supportive learning environment and encouraged learner participation. Therefore, teachers should regularly integrate pair work and small-group discussions into their classes, and relevant institutions should offer training in anxiety-reduction strategies.
