Abstract

Syzygium oleana is easy to find in the campus area, which can be found on roadsides, parking areas, and campus grounds. This study aims to (1) describe the stomata index on the leaves of Syzygium oleana at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, (2) to describe the validation of handout teaching materials, and (3) to describe the practicality of the content of the handout teaching materials. This study uses descriptive research methods to collect data in the field and further research results are developed in the form of teaching materials in the form of handouts using development research methods according to Tessmer. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the sampling area showed varying stomatal indices. Variations in the stomatal index results obtained are influenced by the intensity of sunlight. The results of the validation handout developed were declared valid from the average assessment of 2 experts with an average validity score of 75.83%. The results of the practicality test of the contents by 4 students obtained the result that is 82.46% so that it can be categorized as practical.

Abstract

Abstract Environmental problems in Aranio Village, Banjar Regency, are predominantly characterized by open burning of household waste, direct disposal of domestic wastewater into the river, and the use of synthetic chemical substances in washing activities, which contribute to environmental pollution and public health risks. This community service program aimed to improve community knowledge, attitudes, and skills in household waste management and the utilization of local natural materials in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The target partners were residents of Aranio Village, with a total of 34 participants involved, while the number of respondents participating in the daily evaluations ranged from 15 to 22, depending on the attendance rate at each intervention session. The program was implemented using the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach through educational and counseling activities, group discussions, as well as training, simulations, and demonstrations on the production of organic compost from household organic waste, liquid soap made from pandan leaf extract, and lemongrass-based aromatherapy candles. Program evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test assessments and direct observation during the activities. The results indicated a statistically significant increase in participants’ knowledge across all intervention materials (p < 0.05). Quantitatively, knowledge improvement was observed in compost processing (p = 0.012), the application of clean and healthy living behavior through soap use (p = 0.002), and the production of aromatherapy candles (p < 0.001). Qualitatively, participants were able to produce environmentally friendly products and demonstrated generally positive attitudes toward the use of natural materials. Keywords: community service; waste management; natural materials; environmental education.
