Abstract

The film titled “Yuni” talks about a young girl named Yuni who experiences pressure from her society to get married. Despite gaining international recognition through awards at prestigious events, this film has attracted various discourses on social media. This research aims to examine the audience’s meaning of the film “Yuni”, especially for women who have married in their teens. This is phenomenological research that focuses on the experience of the audience as individuals. The research method uses Stuart Hall’s reception analysis with the concept of encoding and decoding and uses the stereotype concept of Richard Dyer as an analytical tool. This research uses in-depth interviews, observations, and literature studies. The results show that the audience’s meaning is in a position of dominance and negotiation. A dominant position occurs through scenes that show that married teenage girls are victims of a still-strong cycle of patriarchal systems and we will limit the options to develop themselves for experience after marriage. The negotiating position occurs in scenes that show stereotypes related to women must be smart in matters of kitchens, wells, and beds.

Abstract

The emergence of K-pop idol group Aespa has changed the landscape of K-pop fan culture since the group introduced the concept of a digital alter ego in the form of digital “ae” members. This research aims to understand how Indonesian fans construct the meanings of the digital alter ego concept carried by Aespa. This research is conducted by the reception analysis method. Informants consisted of four Aespa’s fans, each with distinct experience as K-pop fans. The main findings in this research revolve around the different reading positions held by informants, as affected by the distinct framework of knowledge, relations of consumption, and technical infrastructure surrounding their cultural practices as K-pop fans. Aespa’s digital alter ego could be seen in three ways: as another version of the self, a dishonest self-representation, and a polished version of the self. Through these differences, it can be concluded that fans’ construction of meanings cannot be reviewed through a deterministic approach but through a socio-cultural approach instead.

Abstract

Instagram social media platform has become the source of recent information on various fields for the youth audiences, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that Indonesia and the world are currently facing. Unfortunately, not every information on Instagram, especially the controversial and viral ones, are aimed to be informative. Some information is considered provocative and only creating panic instead of raising awareness. This research is intended to understand how Indonesian youth audiences perceive Covid-19 related information through Instagram and how useful and informative the information has been. The research is conducted using a qualitative approach and reception analysis method by interviewing the informants to achieve specific data. All informants are categorized as youth audiences with different socio-cultural backgrounds. Findings in this research show that informants tend to be in the negotiated reading position, in which they are negotiating the Covid-19 information they gain from Instagram with the discourse that they may receive from other sources. They believe that Covid-19 is real, but they have concerns in regards to the handling effort of the virus spread in Indonesia. This negotiated position has evoked both fear and alertness among Indonesian youth towards the uncertainty condition of this pandemic era.

Abstract

Online dating apps have changed the way people build interpersonal communication, particularly in the way they present and disclose themselves online in order to search for a relationship. The characteristic of online dating apps has urged users to build a rather liquid relationship; hence the transformation of intimacy and user’s view of romance, sex, and relationship. In the frame of computer-mediated communication and social informatics, socio-cultural context plays a significant role in shaping the self-presentation and self-disclosure performed by people, in the relation to the dating culture in Indonesia. In the case of Indonesia, this phenomenon is considered unique since the socio-cultural context is rather seeing the ‘liquidity’ in modern romance as banality and condemning the practice as immoral. This research aims to analyze the Indonesian socio-cultural context in shaping people’s self-presentation and self-disclosure in interpersonal communication through online dating apps, particularly Tinder. This research is conducted by a new ethnography method, involving 20 informants who are Indonesian youth active users of online dating apps. The key findings in this research include the contestation between self-agency and self-commodification in the practice of using online dating apps, as well as the shaping of contemporary dating culture among Indonesian youth. Apparently, the contemporary dating culture in Indonesia, also constructed heavily by online dating apps, allows ones to gain sexual revolution in the process of commodifying themselves.

Abstract

The Juvenile Social Protection and Rehabilitation Center (BPRSR) of Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) handles juvenile street violence (klithih) offenders but faces challenges in peer mentoring, a vital component of restorative justice. To enhance the skills of BPRSR staff, the Youth Studies Centre (YouSure), in collaboration with the Centre for Public Mental Health (CPMH), organized a community service program in the form of a workshop series. The program aimed to strengthen staff capabilities in identifying mental health problems, providing psychological first aid, and offering basic counseling. The training began with a pre-test to assess participants’ initial skills, followed by the training sessions, and concluded with a post-test. Results from the pre-test revealed a lack of understanding of the procedures for addressing mental health issues, while the post-test demonstrated a significant improvement in both skills and knowledge. Despite the training’s effectiveness, further followup is necessary to achieve a more comprehensive approach to restorative justice. Future training should be more in-depth and ongoing, addressing the identified gaps and supporting the practical application of these skills in adolescent rehabilitation at BPRSR.

Abstract

The development of social media has created an opportunity for the perpetuation of poverty exploitation in which is mediated through social platforms, for instance, aid that was once given directly is now conveyed through digital features, as seen in one of TikTok’s functionalities, thus giving rise to the emergence of a novel form of commodification, known as “empathy commodification”. This research aims to examine the process of empathy commodification and understand the public’s responses to the phenomenon of online “ngemis dan nyawer” on the TikTok social media platform. Subsequently, strategies will be formulated to mitigate poverty exploitation in the media. The research employs a mixed-method approach with sociocultural approach and interpretative paradigm. Data is collected through content analysis, surveys, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The research findings indicate that the process of empathy commodification on TikTok occurs through the live streaming feature, with audience empathy being commodified through economic-value gifts. Strategies to reduce poverty exploitation in the media can be achieved by social media campaigns

Abstract

In the 2024 presidential election, a fan community (fandom) named Humanies emerged to support one of the presidential candidates, Anies Baswedan. This support began with the emergence of @aniesbubble and @olpproject accounts on social media X, which carried out many activities that adopted fandom culture, such as crowdfunding and fan-projects to support their idol. This research aims to find out how fandom culture is utilized in Anies Baswedan’s political campaign on social media X, how the utilization of fandom politicization affects the gen-Z view about Anies Baswedan in the 2024 Presidential Election, and to determine the effectiveness of the campaign. The research method is a mixed-method that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, conducted with netnography and survey. The result of this research shows that @aniesbubble and @olpproject accounts successfully adopted fandom culture as a campaign tool for Anies Baswedan. In addition, this research finds out that the politicization of fandom proved to have an influence of 79% on gen-Z’s views on Anies Baswedan and the campaign proved to be effective.

Abstract

Among Indonesian netizens, the debate around “childfree” issue has become a topic of discussion in the Instagram, especially since this issue was raised by influencer Gita Savitri. Instagram netizens' opinions are divided; some support the childfree concept, but many disagree. The debate regarding childfree has even given rise to discourse polarization between narratives that are pro and anti toward childfree. This research attempts to capture and dismantle discourse contestations related to the issue of childfree on Instagram. This research was conducted with feminist critical discourse analysis method. In this research, it was found that there were three focuses of debate between the pro-childfree and anti-childfree narratives. First, the religious perspective in viewing childfree. Second, motivation to have children. Third, women’s agency in choosing not to have children. The contestation of this discourse is motivated by patriarchal and capitalist understandings which are deeply rooted and internalized in Indonesian society in general, making it difficult for them to accept views that are different from the general views which they believe to be true.
