Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze word usage i.e. taboo words in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street and this study uses the approach through Sociolinguistics. The film is 3 hours long and has found 34 words containing taboos. This research was conducted to identify the taboo words and its types. This study applies qualitative methods to describe the conditions in a film. Data in form speech is spoken, while the data context is from the video of the movie of The Wolf of Wall Street . The data are collected by selecting a dialog that contains taboo words after watching and using the transcript of the film as additional reference. The writers focus on the dialogue spoken by all characters in the film which contain taboo words. The results of this study are as follows. First, the found taboo words can be divided into three, namely (1) banned behavior, (2) banned topics and (3) banned terms. Second, the type of the taboo words can be divided into four types: (1) epithets are found seven times, (2) profanity are found six times, (3) vulgar are found ten times, and the last (4) obscenity are found eleven times.

Abstract

Abstract - The objective of this study is to know the most dominant grammatical error made by the seventh-grade students of SMP Trisula Perwari 2 in writing recount text and the reason for the errors. The writer used Betty Azar’s types of error theory and Richards’ sources of error theory. The method used in this study was a descriptive analysis method to describe students’ errors and analyze the data. The research findings show that add a word error holds the first position in the most dominant errors made by the seventh-grade students of SMP Trisula Perwari 2 with 154 errors or 20% followed by other types of error with the total error of verb tense is 114 errors or 15% and spelling is 93 errors or 12%. In addition, the writer found that the students’ errors caused by interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. The most frequent source of errors affecting the students in making recount text is intralingual transfer with a total of 437 errors (57%), which is followed by interlingual transfer in the second position with a total of 328 errors (43%). Key Words: Error Analysis, Writing, Recount Text.Abstrak - Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis kesalahan yang paling dominan dibuat oleh siswa kelas tujuh SMP Trisula Perwari 2 dalam menulis teks recount dan sebab dari kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut. Penulis menggunakan teori jenis kesalahan milik Betty Azar dan teori sumber kesalahan milik Richards. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode analisis deskriptif untuk menjelaskan kesalahan siswa dan menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis kesalahan add a word berada di posisi pertama dalam jenis kesalahan paling dominan yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas tujuh SMP Trisula Perwari 2 dengan 154 kesalahan atau 20% diikuti oleh jenis kesalahan lainnya dengan total kesalahan verb tense adalah 114 kesalahan atau 15% dan spelling adalah 93 kesalahan atau 12%. Selain itu, penulis menemukan bahwa kesalahan siswa disebabkan oleh interlingual transfer dan intralingual transfer. Sumber kesalahan yang paling sering mempengaruhi siswa dalam membuat teks recount adalah intralingual transfer dengan total 437 kesalahan (57%) yang diikuti oleh interlingual transfer di posisi kedua dengan total 328 kesalahan (43%).Kata Kunci : Analisis Kesalahan, Menulis, Teks Recount

Abstract

Psycholinguistics has contributed to numerous theories that explain how a person acquires language, produces and uses spoken and written language. Without adequate English language skills, BSI students will face fundamental problems in their studies, especially in class discussions. A descriptive study was conducted to describe the problems faced by Bina Sarana Informatika (BSI) students during class discussions. This study uses a qualitative method design. A total of 3 students who took part in this study were from the BSI English Department. This study collected data using semi-structured interviews. From the results of the research conducted, there were findings of several causes of mistakes made when students were talking, including children who feels anxious when speaking during discussions. Elements of this error can be classified based on the realm of psychology. The causes of mistakes that have feelings of anxiety and worry are related to the affective domain.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate and to find a crystal-clear picture of a woman’s position in three online news which discussed children’s sexual harassment in Luwu Timur, Indonesia. This is a qualitative study which use critical discourse analysis techniques. The objects of study are three online news which distributed by www.liputan6.com, www.nasional.okezone.com, and www.pikiran-rakyat.com. All online news was written by three different reporters and was released after the case is closed by Indonesian Police. All the source data were analysed by using the Sara Mills model i.e., the subject-object position and the writer-reader. There are found that two from three online news texts were pictured women as the subject rather than object while two online news texts considered the reader important while the remaining excluded the position of readers. The benefits of this study – it could be used as additional information and reference for anyone who wants to study critical discourse analyses especially Sara Mills model.

Abstract

Code switching is a combination of two or more languages and a combination of words, phrases and sentences. Code switching is usually used by bilinguals or multilinguals. This research aims to examine the types of code switching and determine the effectiveness of using code switching to find out how far respondents understand the use of code switching that occurs in Denny Sumargo's video podcast with Cinta Laura by using a questionnaire to 30 respondents. This research was conducted using mixed methods, namely qualitative methods and quantitative methods. In this research, there are 3 types of code switching according to Poplack (1980), namely Intra-sentential switching, Inter-sentential switching and Tag switching. And the results show that intra-sentential switching is the most dominant type of code switching that occurs. From that the use of code switching, it was found that 43% of respondents agreed with positive statements and 29% of respondents disagreed with negative statements. So it can be concluded that the effectiveness of using code switching in the video podcast content is quite effective and can be well understood by the majority of respondents.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana penerapan hegemoni patriarki dalam novel terjemahan The Stars Shine Down karya Sidney Sheldon. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis isi. Novel terjemahan karya Sidney Sheldon berjudul The Stars Shine Down dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni patriarki dari Antonio Gramsci. Dalam teorinya, Gramsci mengklasifikasikan hegemoni ke dalam tiga bentuk: Hegemoni Integral, Hegemoni Dekaden, dan Hegemoni Minimal. Novel tersebut menjadi sumber data utama dalam penelitian ini. Data yang dikumpulkan berupa kata, frasa, kalimat, kutipan, serta narasi atau wacana yang menggambarkan dan merepresentasikan dominasi hegemoni patriarki publik terhadap tokoh perempuan dalam cerita. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui metode baca dan catat, di mana peneliti membaca teks secara berulang dan mencatat data yang relevan. Proses analisis data mengacu pada konsep hegemoni menurut Gramsci. Langkah awal dalam kajian ini adalah mengidentifikasi kata, frasa, kalimat, dan konteks dalam novel yang mencerminkan dominasi patriarki, untuk kemudian dianalisis lebih lanjut. Ditemukan pula bahwa jenis hegemoni patriarki yang ditemukan dalam novel ini terdapat empat jenis yaitu kekerasan, seksualitas, budaya dan produksi rumah tangga. Kemudian dua jenis hegemoni patriarki pertama yang paling dominan adalah kekerasan dan seksualitas.Kata kunci: Patriarki, Hegemoni, Novel

Abstract

One of problematic problem in English translation into Indonesian language is tenses. Since Indonesian language is tenseless therefore to make a translation accurate certain method are required. Tenses shall be accurately translated therefore the TL reader understand the original meaning of the ST. Due to that reason, this research aims to investigate furthermore the translation accuracy of tenses in Indonesian novel version entitled; Destination Unknown. The tenses which are found: (1) Simple Present, (2) Simple Past, (3) Simple Future, (4) Present Progressive, (5) Past Progressive, (6) Present Perfect, and (7) Past Perfect. The method used in this study is descriptive analytical-interpretative technique. This study employs questionnaire as the instrument which is given to three raters represents academician, practitioner, and teacher in answering the problems of the study i.e. the translation accuracy of tenses in Indonesian translated novel. In short, the study found that overall all the tenses translation in the Indonesian translated novel was translated accurately. The difference percentages level of accuracy between one tense to another is not quite significant

Abstract

The purpose of research is to find out about the bravery needed in life in daily life. This research was carried out through a film titled Knives Out which was released in 2019, Directed by Rian Johnson. The author wants to analyze the causes of braveness. The writer chose Knives Out movie and used the main character as the object of this research. This research method is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study are: (1) The main character's braveness is based on Rahman's theory: Decision-Making and Impulsivity, Risk-Taking Behavior and Sensation Seeking, Self-Confidence and Altruism (2) Actions of main character’s braveness: Confess Her Fault, Finding the Truth, Fight for Her Rights, Proving the Truth. Brave is one of the many important qualities that we must possess. The importance of the presence of people around you, just to remind you of the wrong decision that will be taken. Instead of regretting later, it's better to listen to the opinion of the people closest to be considered in making decisions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan penggunaan aplikasi Speaky.Com pada penilaian memperkenalkan diri mahasiswa Bina Sarana Informatika. Pendekatan yang digunakan oleh peneliti pada penelitian ini yaitu kuantitatif. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yakni menggunakan bantuan software SPSS Versi 26 yaitu untuk menghitung uji normalitas dan hipotesis penelitian (Uji T). Variabel dalam peelitian ini yaitu terdiri dari dua jenis yaitu variabel bebas dan variabel terikat. Variabel bebas (X) pada penelitian ini yaitu aplikasi speaky.com dan variabel terikat (Y) pada penelitian ini yaitu pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada materi memperkenalkan diri. Populasi pada penelitian ini yaitu mahasiswa semester 2 mata kuliah dasar umum bahasa Inggris sedangkan, sampel pada penelitian ini yaitu terbagi menjadi dua yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kontrol. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini yaitu terbagi menjadi teknik tes yang digunakan untuk mengukur secara objektif untuk mendapatkan data terkait kemampuan mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris materi memperkenalkan diri menggunakan aplikasi speaky. Berdasarkan hasil eksperimen yang telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan aplikasi speaky nilai mahasiswa terkait materi memperkenalkan diri mengalami peningkatan yang cukup signifikan dari nilai kelas kontrol serta melebihi standar nilai cukup. Hal itu dikarenakan dengan menggunakan aplikasi speaky mahasiswa dapat mempraktikan secara langsung dengan seseorang yang menggunakan bahasa inggris sebagai penutur asli yang berasal dari berbagai belahan dunia.Kata Kunci: keterampilan memperkenalkan diri, speakly.com, mahasiswa

Abstract

Code mixing is part of linguistics. Many people uses code mixing in everyday conversation for example, often found when in a mall, supermarket or restaurant. Code mixing is the use of one language unit into another language. The code mixing occurs when the speaker enters a foreign language into the language that is more dominantly  used.  This  research  investigates  the  use  of  code  mixing  applied  by waiters and customers at Pizza Hut Gunung Sahari by using descriptive qualitative method. As a result of the analysis, it can be found that there are two types of code mixing used in conversations between waiters and customers at Pizza Hut Gunung Sahari, they are Word Insertion and Phrase Insertion. The writer also found there are six reasons of code mixing used: Bilingualism, Speaker and Partner Speaking, Social Community, Situation, Vocabulary and Prestige. Based on Khairunas theory using code mixing can increase knowledge in other languages and if overeating is used it will have a bad effect because the speaker will always rely on code mixing and can change the speaker's accent.
